Chapter 75: Chapter 74

Chapter 74

She was still panting, and sweat trickled down the side of her face. The drumming in her chest continued as she tried to calm her nerves. She swallowed hard to conquer the building lump in her throat. Her mouth was dry, though. She exhaled loudly as she pushed her hair out of her face. She closed her eyes as she rubbed her temple from the rising ache of her head.

Carmen was assisted by another girl from the nearest bed in Melisca’s area. She grunted at the pain of the impact.

"Did you do that on purpose to Carmen? She was just trying to wake you!" One of the girls that stood up exclaimed at her.

Melisca remained silent as she continued to caress her forehead to soothe the banging pain in her head. She gritted her teeth. Her other hand was clenching and unclenching.

"Hey! We’re talking to you!" The girl was about to stomp towards her bed, but her companion held her arm and blocked her.

"Stop it, Diana. She may not have done it on purpose. She was having a nightmare. Maybe she was just surprised." Explained the girl.

"What a nuance you have been ever since you showed up. And even in our sleep, you still had everyone’s attention. It’s fucking 3:00 in the morning!" The woman continued to spit.

"Enough, Diana." Carmen reprimanded. "You two get back to your bed. Everyone, return to your sleep." She ordered, and the two followed, but not without throwing a glare in Melisca’s direction.

Carmen was surprised at how strong the woman was because of the distance that she had thrown her either accidentally or not. But she had to get her under control. She’s the dorm leader after all. She tried to approach her again.

Melisca’s head remained covered by her hand. Her knees huddled before her.

"Liz, are you okay?" Carmen asked, standing beside Melisca’s bed. She’s not afraid of the newbie. Her action earlier just caught her by surprise.

"I’m fine." Melisca finally uttered, but there was a growl in her voice. She was wincing from the pounding of her head. "I’m sorry. Please leave me alone." She pleaded with her teeth gnashing, trying not to voice out the pain she was feeling. But a hiss escaped from her lips.

Carmen stared at her for a moment and then turned around. There was nothing she could do about that. The newcomer may have emotional trauma from whatever happened to her. It may not be just a simple nightmare.

Melisca can hear her own breathing. It sounded painful, grieving. Yes, she wanted to dream of her parents, but never like this. It should have never been like this! If they were still alive. If they hadn’t been killed. Everything would have been different. She wouldn’t be there. She wouldn’t be feeling this unsurmountable misery.

She clenched her fist, which turned her knuckles white. She had to think straight. She can’t have her emotional tantrum there. There were other people in the room. She stood up and went to the bathroom. As she entered, the lights turned on automatically. Without thinking twice, she stood under one of the showers and turned the water on. She didn’t use the heater. The colder the water, the better for her.

She tilted her face up directly from the gushing water. After a minute, she adjusted the shower head to a specific angle before she sat down on the floor. Her back touched the tiled wall. Water is still constantly dripping on her head. She propped her elbows on her knees, her head was facing down, and her eyes were closed.

Anyone who could have seen her in her current state would see how pathetic she was. She was reminded again of the past. One of her many reasons was that she didn’t want to have anyone around when she was sleeping because something like this was likely to happen anytime. And when she woke up, she wanted to destroy things, to go wild, to somehow release sickening despair inside her. But she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. She can’t run amok. Her insides were boiling in rage. The bubbling wrath wanted to get out on the surface, but she had to do everything she could to control it.

She growled to express her breath of frustration. She was inside the bathroom anyway, and the sound of the shower, along with how thick the walls are, certainly hoped that it didn’t reach the ears of anyone outside.

If she could transform, she would be howling in grief. It was starting to get foggy around her. Her puffs of breath also had smoke from them. It was freezing inside the bathroom. The mirrors everywhere were covered in moisture.

Melisca hasn’t even shivered from the burning coldness. She had too much heat inside her. Too much fire. She felt like there was an active volcano in her. Its lava was bubbling. Tiny bursts were rising.

She evened her breathing and raised her head. She tilted her face up, the back of her head touching the wall. She put a hand on her face, and her eyes remained closed.

She was back to that scene again when she was eight years old.

The little child who covered her ears and crouched on the ground was mumbling incoherently for her parents. For anyone who could help her. Her eyes clenched shut, for she doesn’t want to look at anyone for the fear that she felt.

Her loud cries didn’t help to cover the noise of the bullets being fired in her direction. Tears dripped on the ground as her body was trembling and petrified at the same time.

Then all of a sudden, the noise was gone. It all stopped. A growl and cries of pain were heard from the men. Melisca was still sniffling and she didn’t dare raise her head to see what was happening. She was just relieved that the sounds of the gun had stopped. After a few moments, everyone was quiet. Only the panting breaths of a creature can be heard.

Cabril transformed into his human form and kneeled beside his daughter. He wrapped her in his arms. "Daddy is here. Shh." He kissed the top of her head and pulled her closer. He totally enveloped her to his body, protecting her from any harm that would come their way. "Shh. You’re safe now. I’m here, sweetie." He lifted her from the ground and the girl hugged him back, encircling her short arms around his neck.

Her cries finally calmed down. "D-daddy." Her small, innocent voice was now laced with fear and tremble. Upon hearing it, he felt like his heart was attacked by countless needles altogether.

That was how she was saved by her dad back then.

She blew a loud breath. For her, no physical pain can ever be compared to what she felt emotionally. The freezing temperature around her was slowly enveloping her skin, her system. She finally managed to let down her senses after some time and she could feel the cold running in her bloodstream. She had to let it in to calm the erupting lava inside her. It was finally starting to work.

Her headache was almost gone. Replaced by numbness from the foggy cold all around the room.

A thought came upon her. Her mother might have been here also. She could have trained in the same environment. Melicia didn’t say much about being a hunter. She just told her that she was one before she married her dad. She didn’t know that they would have to undergo a training camp. And the camp was also where she met her traitors of best friends.

And that’s why she didn’t consider to have one. It was always better that way for her. Lorna? Who knows what the girl wants with her that she keeps sticking to her? But she can fake it until she makes it. That phrase was always useful for her when she had to keep someone to take advantage of.

If Lorna needs her to survive in the camp, then she would take that as an opportunity to have more knowledge and access from the daughter of two of the higher-ups.

There was a possibility too that Lorna’s parents could be involved in getting her mom killed. If she had proven that, then she wouldn’t hesitate to take what they took of her—the life of her mother.

She would never forget why she was there.

And come to think of it. Did the hunters didn’t know the name of the hybrid they had been searching for? One of the hunters she killed who was after the vampire before was there when she was eight years old. The guy named Danilo. And her mother shouted her name in front of them. So, they should have suspected her of being the hybrid that they had been searching for. Or were the hunters open-minded to think that they just incidentally had the same name? But it was very strange. And she can’t ask Lorna about it. The girl didn’t mention anything of a hybrid that was missing. Maybe it was the organization’s secret mission.

However, it was a good thing that they did seem to forget or whatever that they did not think she was the hybrid. It was a total blessing from who knows where.

With a lot more thought, she did not notice that she had fallen asleep. Her head lulled to the side, touching her arms as her elbow was propped on top of one knee.

A bell chimed. It was freaking loud for Melica’s ears that she woke up just from the first echo. She winced and covered her ears as she looked around from where the sound came from. "Fuck. What was that?" She hissed as her teeth gritted in annoyance. She stood up and turned off the shower.

Everything around the room was covered in foggy air, and all the mirrors were blurred from the mist. She slightly shivered so she raised the heat in her system. Anyone who would enter would think that it was winter season inside the bathroom. The bell finally stopped chiming on its third tolling. She didn’t know what time it was already. But she heard a faint noise from the girls outside. Everyone was getting up. So that bell must be the wake-up call for everybody.

She grabbed a fresh towel from the shelf above the sink and took off her soaked clothes.

Her head ached a little from lack of proper sleep. Even wolves had to sleep. Unlike the vampires. It wasn’t essential for them.

She opened the door and went to her sleeping area. Everyone glanced at her. They all thought that she had woken before the bell and already took her shower. She did not spare them any attention and just continued to change into her uniform inside the dressing curtain. Her hair was dripping wet. She doesn’t care. She just wanted to get out of the dorm and head somewhere else. Somewhere less suffocating. If there was any possible place like that in this underground facility.
