The Runaway Huntress -
Chapter 64 - 63
Chapter 64: Chapter 63
Chapter 63
Melisca and Lorna have already arrived at their destination. They were in Dhasma City. A few hours of travel from Falden. They decided to take the train since Lorna insisted and said that it was the best choice. Her motorcycle wouldn’t be of much use, for they would be staying in a camp and weren’t allowed to get out until they passed the training. That was what Lorna explained when they were on the train.
She doesn’t know what else to think. She just had to focus on concealing her abilities.
Someone was waiting for them already at the train station, and Lorna greeted the male who took her luggage. She didn’t give hers and stop him from reaching for it. "It’s fine. This’ll stay with me." The guy nodded and opened the backseat door for them.
"Don’t worry about him. He’s one of our people." Lorna said and hopped inside the sedan first. She followed.
"A hunter also?" They were already inside the car, so she was able to mention it freely.
Lorna shook her head. "No. Just a driver."
"Are we going straight to the camp?" She asked. The driver got inside after settling Lorna’s bag in the back compartment.
"Yes. It’s about to be evening soon. So, I had to run you through everything before we start the training tomorrow."
The car started, and they slowly got out of the parking lot before hitting the highway.
"What was it like there?" She asked curiously.
"Oh, it wasn’t like a normal camp. I want you to see it for yourself."
She nodded and didn’t ask any more questions.
"I’m sure it would be easy-peasy for you. You had the advantage of being a hunter and a fighter already. Plus, your looks."
"Then, can I skip the training?"
"No. No way."
"You had been through it, right? How long until we know I passed?"
"Yes. I had been through it, but I never passed. I escaped from there. Fighting head-on is not my forte. So, I prefer doing tricks and investigating. Like a support, a distraction from the target. I don’t really like to be the one doing the killing. I believe I already told you that."
Melisca was just listening intently. She needed to gather as much information from Lorna as possible. So that she could work her way in smoothly and can plan ahead of any danger.
"And for the results, it can be any time if the trainers could see your outstanding performance. You’ll pass it in no time." Lorna even bumped her shoulder with hers playfully.
"You believe in me a lot." She stated.
"Of course." There was a proud grin on the girl’s face. "I know you can do it."
Melisca turned her face to the window. A wistful smile crept up to her lips from what Lorna said. It was a bit uncomfortable for her. Hearing someone boost her confidence after a very long time, aside from her parents was strange. But she felt a little warmth from those words.
She continued looking outside. Thinking that this city had hunters also. There was even a training camp within. Before, she considered living in Dhasma, but somehow she ended up in Vrona. It was a blur in her memory. So, she stayed and survived there on her own.
How was he doing? Ezekiel came to her mind again for the nth time. She hoped that he wouldn’t meet him anytime soon. Surely he can’t know where she is. She was already in another city. And she didn’t know how else he could track her.
After a few more minutes. They entered a private property. She hadn’t noticed that her surroundings had changed. Her mind was in a daze, and she might have just stared into space. The vehicle was taking a turn toward a two-way road.
There was a grassy area on both sides and a large metal gate ahead. A mansion was situated inside. And before that, there was a round fountain that greeted them when the gate opened by itself. There’s a security post at the side. The driver opened the window, also Lorna to her side. She didn’t move though and waited for Lorna’s instructions on what to do.
Two security personnel approached their service. One bent his body at the driver’s window to look inside. The other opened the compartment.
The guy suddenly landed his eyes in her direction, and it was glued to her face. She glanced at him and returned her gaze outside. She should have put a mask on, but Lorna said that wearing a mask wasn’t allowed once they were inside the vicinity. Everyone wanted to make sure that no one was imposing as someone as part of the group. It was one of the rules the girl mentioned during their ride.
"She’s with me." Lorna stated to the security. She glanced at Liz beside her, who was looking outside the window.
"It’s the first time you brought a friend here, Ms. Loriena."
The driver was the one who answered him. "Back off now, David. Don’t hit with our guest."
"She’s here to train. And you don’t stand a chance with her. So don’t even try." Lorna added.
The guy, David, sighed and retreated to stand up straight and waved them to proceed.
"I thought we were going to a camp." Melisca mumbled. All she saw was a huge white mansion and a beautiful garden that was obviously taken care of by a gardener. The sound of the rippling water from the fountain was soothing to her ears. It reminded her of the river by the mountain. There were also some housekeepers in uniform cleaning the surroundings.
"Yes. Here is camp."
She was still confused but didn’t say anything else. Maybe what she was seeing was just a front. A lie to anyone’s eyes. She didn’t know what was inside yet.
They entered a huge garage with various cars inside. The driver and Lorna got out. She followed too with her backpack. She stood still when she hopped out. Her eyes roamed around the entire vicinity. There were only a few different models of the cars. But all looked sleek and beautiful.
Lorna noticed Liz’s reaction. She remembered the woman even marveled when she saw the chef’s vehicle the other day when they were escaping the wolf from the diner. Her new friend really had a fascination for cars. She seemed to love fast-moving things.
"Who owns these cars, Lorna?" Melisca couldn’t stop herself from asking.
She loves cars and she can afford to buy one but her circumstances would only put a great car to waste. It wouldn’t benefit her if she had a bigger object to watch out for. Her motorcycle was enough. Of course, she won’t purchase something that can be damaged easily. That’s a waste of money for her. Besides, her big bike was a lot more convenient, especially speeding around the city in traffic. She can squirm into narrow spaces to get ahead of any other vehicles. That’s also the other factor why he chose to have one instead of a car. But maybe, after everything, she might purchase one. Considering she would come out alive in her suicide mission.
Lorna shrugged her shoulders. "Family, maybe. But I don’t know who owns which. But that last car over there." She tilted her head at the farthest black car in the back row. Liz followed her gaze. "That was my dad’s."
Melisca felt a tinge of jealousy and hurt. The girl still had her parents. They are very much alive. Unlike hers. She swallowed the lump in her throat that was starting to build, and clinched her fists, holding her emotions inside. She nodded and turned her eyes away. Her jaw was ticking as she gritted her teeth. She can’t let anyone see her raging emotions inside. How she wanted to ignite the entire place to ashes. Including anyone. Her main target just might be inside. She didn’t know yet how many people led to her mother’s demise. But she would get them all. No one would be spared.
"Ms. Loriena, do you want me to bring this to your room first?" The driver asked. The duffle bag in his grip.
"Yes, please, Toni. Thanks." She answered and the guy nodded before walking out on them. She turned to Melisca. "Come on. Let’s get you a bed space." Lorna tangled her arm to Melisca’s elbow and pulled her to the nearest door.
Bed space? She remembered back then in her training she had to sleep with everyone else for almost three months. She got used to it but, she never liked the experience. She was the fastest learner though, that’s why she graduated the earliest. It was one of the reasons she pushed herself to master all the stages and obstacles of the training. It was also the first time in history for the camp to have someone pass everything excellently in just a few months.
"Or would you like to stay with me in my private room?" Lorna offered. She noticed Liz was silent.
"You actually have your own room here?" Melisca asked.
"I actually lived here before I rebelled and went on my own way." She pulled a card from her pocket and held it to the small scanner at the side of the door, against the concrete wall.
She wanted to say ’yes’ automatically to Lorna’s offer. She thinks she can tolerate her somehow. But staying with other people might be useful to gather information also. All the secret talks and whispered conversations could provide her knowledge of what was happening around her and who was real or not. It would be a lot of risk since she’d be surrounded by the people who were after her. But she wouldn’t miss the chance. She had to blend in.
