Chapter 53: Chapter 52

Chapter 52

Melisca was standing behind a tree. Thoughts crawled up in her mind. Maybe the driver was just taking a break from the long ride. But she can’t take the chance of being careless from unsure conclusions. She turned to her left. She could enter this way of the forest, but it wasn’t the route she was familiar with. She could get lost again. But then, it’s daytime. It might not be that hard to find her way back. Hopefully.

She had to be on alert, wearing her supersenses like armor to her skin. She might stumble on strangers, so she thought it better to leap on the high branches. Though she can hear if anyone’s around the area she is in, sprinting dulls some of her alertness in the surroundings.

She gripped the cloth she wrapped to the chest tighter and crouched down before leaping up, landing gracefully on a tree branch. She started to jump from tree to tree. But after several leaps, her ears caught some noise from an area far ahead to her right. Using her vision to zoom into that direction, a few people were gathering in a spot, a pile of soil at the side. Her nose scrunched up when she caught a whiff of a foul smell from a dead body. It wasn’t just a body. There were two bodies. Two men in camping attire. The older one had its neck twisted at a creepy angle, and the younger body was too pale, and just from the glance at it, the hollowed cheeks and skin stuck to the bones. It was like his blood was sucked out. There’s a slice and bitemark of a vampire.

Melisca blinks many times. How did those people find the bodies? Did the vampire tip them the exact location? She looked back at the people standing around. They were not wearing a police uniform, no authority badge on their waists, or something that would indicate that they were a legal team from any law enforcement.

What she found was a different kind of gun in the hands of the others.

Hunters! They were hunters. Her heart started to pound louder. She scanned each face for the other friend of her mother who came to visit, but no one was familiar enough for her. However, they were all in the same group, and other hunters had come for them in the past that tried to get to her. Why not return the favor of coming to them now? Since they were deep in the forest, no one would likely find out what happened to them unless she kept one alive. But she would never allow that mistake.

Still, she wondered how they knew about those bodies. Her thought only had one answer. Laia. Maybe she indeed worked for the hunters secretly. Disappointment grated on her. She might not trust the girl, but she just can’t believe that she was blinded by her acts. And hunters weren’t all humans. There were supernaturals with them too. Those who betrayed their own race. But for what?

Or how about a tracker anywhere on their body? She hoped it was the latter.

However, that wasn’t her business. So, she better stick to her plans in the present. Now, should she kill them all at once? That would be the best since she was on a tight schedule. No time to delay. But then she had to bury more than just a box. That sounds like a lot of work.

She tied the box to the tree securely, and she leaped down without any noise, not even wanting to scare the birds and other creatures nearby. She placed the plybar at the root of the tree.

Stalking closer to the circle discreetly, she moved and stayed hidden from bark to bark. Her senses were on alert in case there were other people nearby outside the gathering.

No one strayed around from the circle. She moved again like a breeze of wind. Crouching down to reach for her new weapon at the side of her boots. She eyed the dagger in her hand. Let’s see how you dance with me. Her eyes squinted. She might have imagined it, but for a second, she thought the crescent moon glowed at the hilt, ready for her as well.

She shook her head and focused her attention on the hunters. Observing which one should she take down first. Those with firearms, of course. They were discussing something but did not pay any heed to it. Two of them were standing side by side, and the other three were at a distance.

She inhaled a huge breath and kicked off on her speed with a tight grip on the dagger. She slashed the throat of the man who was luckily closest to where she stood. The rest were petrified for a second before looking around frantically and they rummaged their pockets or belts. They now had a syringe on hand, ready to strike at her whenever she came close. That is if they can get a hold of her.

The blood oozed out from the deep cut of the neck. He spasmed and reached out a hand to his colleagues, asking for help. But they won’t be able to attack her, for she was behind the man. Some of them were scanning their eyes around to see if she had some backup for the ambush. They were retreating instead of stepping forward to help their friend. To end his suffering, she thrust the dagger into his heart and pulled it out, throwing the body to his companions. Blood spilled on the ground. They moved out of the way, letting the body fall to the ground.

She shook her head. Some friends they are. Even until death, they did not lend a hand to catch him.

Then she snatched another one of them that had a gun ready, she smacked the firearm off her grip and the woman howled in pain. She might have cracked the victim’s wrist in the process.

Melisca gripped the girl by the nape of her cloth and brought her with her as she jumped to a towering tree.

"Help! Let me go!" Her screams made the other creatures scamper away from the sudden disturbance. With one hand, she raised the girl in midair and her body dangled off the towering tree. Only her tight grip was holding her from falling into the dirt. It was several feet below. She might survive but with broken bones.

"Please, please." She begged while holding, grasping at her hand for dear life. "Don’t let go of me." She was wailing for mercy.

What happened to finishing all at once? Well, this is fun. Screw the time. Her companions below could only watch her up above. Not even attempting to catch her if she let go of the girl. They were too afraid to get close, to mingle in her business. But one of them picked up the gun and the other had a phone to his ears. That’s not good. Calling for backup, maybe.

"I don’t like what they were doing. Blame them. I’m done with you." She released her hand from the girl’s nape.

A shrilling tone from her before the cracking sounds of broken bones. What terrible luck, her neck twisted from the fall too. Her eyes were wide open in shock at the last state of life.

Then she leapt down gracefully. Taking off the mask with one hand and inserted it into the inside pocket of her leather jacket.

The remaining three were too stunned to move as they saw her remarkable attractiveness. Their blatant staring made her smirk. "Am I that pretty?" She was being arrogant but it was true. She can have the heart of anyone just by seeing her face. A literal heart, not just romantically.

"T-the signals haven’t gone off." The one with the gun spoke, adjusting his stance. His aim wavered, fingers shaking at the trigger.

"She was that hybrid." The only girl left croaked with a small voice, retreating a step without taking the eyes off her.

"No." The man to the side spoke too, the phone slipped from his hands and fell to the dirt. "No." He was shaking his head in disbelief. Eyes were the size of the saucers.

They were all trembling, body shivering from fear. "Why are you afraid of me?" She inquired, glancing at them one by one. "You were looking for me for a very long time. You were not scared back then." She pushed her long braid behind. "Was it because I was just six years old? Seven years old?" Her brows furrowed in remembering how young she was when hunters kept coming at them, so they had to move from place to place. "And now that I am as big as you, well, except for you." Melisca pointed to the girl that was a foot shorter than her. "But you know what I mean." Her shoulders shrugged and she looked at the two men. "So now that I’m coming to you instead, you were retreating? I’m just returning the favor of hunting you back. How does it feel to be hunted? None of you would be alive to tell the tale of my hunting though."

The man at the back with the syringe gun, fished something from his pocket and sprayed it in the air.

On instinct, she held her breath before her nose caught a whiff of whatever that was. Humans and their tricks.
