Chapter 99: Chapter 99

Avery replied softly, "You would be at the center of the power struggle. You were still a child back then. It would do you good with such immense wealth." She paused before continuing thoughtfully, "In comparison, your sister was already an adult then. Additionally, the possibility of her inheriting the Moran Group was not high. Your mother made the wise choice of letting her take responsibility."

"You’re indeed smart," Alexander sighed heavily in front of Athens for the first time. "My sister could only agree to the marriage alliance, but she had a condition. That was for her to be the CEO of the Moran Group. What happened after was pretty much like what the media said."

Avery’s eyelashes trembled slightly, concealing her lamentation. Married or divorced, legends like Lucy had no free will. Thinking of that, she suddenly thought of the Carter family. The Carter family and the Moran family were complete opposites.

Alexander downed the champagne in his glass. "My sister only had me and her career left after her divorce. To pave the way for me, she didn’t hesitate to offend the founding members of the Moran Group. She also secretly nurtured and promoted a large number of trusted aides." A heavy silence loomed in the air before Alexander continued sadly, "She was eventually forced out of the board after her run-in with the other directors got to the point of being irreparable. She sensed the crisis in advance and arranged for me to join the Moran Group timely. She had been preparing for me to succeed her."

Avery nodded silently.

Alexander spoke again, "A few months later, she got into a car accident. As for me, I succeeded in her place just like she had arranged." At that point, he picked up the champagne bottle and steadily poured it for Avery and himself. Then, he raised his glass and looked at her. "In the past five years, I’ve dug out many suspects, but I can’t confirm the murderer. Avery, would you tell me what you’d do if you were in my place?"

Avery looked back at him. Not long after, she clenched her fists and said decisively, "If I were you, I would think of all these suspects as murderers and beat them up one by one. If I got the right suspect, it would mean I got my revenge. If not, I’d still feel good to vent my anger on all of them. It’d do me no harm."

Alexander was initially slightly stunned by what Avery said. Then, he raised his hand to his forehead and laughed softly. Alexander could not contain his laughter. It got louder each time, to the point of almost slapping the table’s edge as he laughed. "You indeed know me well!"

Avery blinked her beautiful almond-shaped eyes and looked at him dazedly. She was surprised at how he did not restrain his laughter. She wondered if her words were that funny. Fortunately, there were no other patrons around them. It seemed like Alexander had reserved one whole floor of the restaurant. Louis was the only one around, hiding in the corner and peeping at them. Otherwise, Alexander’s noble and cool image would be destroyed.

After laughing for nearly a minute, Alexander finally stopped laughing. He raised his head and sat straight. He stared at Avery. A deep spark was escalating in his eyes, as if a beast was about to start rampaging after being locked up for long.

Avery could not help but blink when she met his gaze. His gaze was strange. Alexander raised his glass and returned to his usual noble self. "Avery, my confidant! Here’s a toast to you!"

Avery raised her glass and clinked it with his. After they downed their champagne, Alexander did not continue talking about his past. He ate heartily. "The steak and cake in this restaurant are not bad. Have a try."

It was the first time Avery felt devoid after listening to other people’s stories. She could feel her empty stomach. She picked up her knife and fork. She ate her meat and drank her soup heartily.

Halfway through her meal, she received an iMessage. It was from Daniel. Daniel reminded her of her promise to update *The Case Chronicles of Detective Lockwood Holmes* in three days. It would be the fourth day after midnight today. Avery’s heart dropped. If not for his reminder, she would have forgotten.

Avery clicked on the website publishing this novel. She was surprised that there had been over 100,000 new comments. There were more than 100,000 dollars in tips from readers in the past three days. The novel’s popularity was overwhelming. She knew she would be doomed if she did not keep her promise. Her readers would curse her badly.

She replied quickly to Daniel. She promised to stay up at night and complete the fifth chronicle for release by the following day. Daniel’s reply was almost instantaneous. He had sent a string of emoticons expressing his agreement and gratitude. He also asked whether she would continue to work on the sixth chronicle right after the fifth.

Avery was speechless. She was eighteen and just got out of high school. She wondered if Daniel thought of her as someone with life experience vast enough to have endless chronicles to write about. Suddenly, her heart skipped a beat. A thought occurred in her mind. She looked up at Alexander.

"I’m involved in an online detective novel based on real-life cases. It’s quite popular. Would you mind if I wrote about your case? If possible, I’ll write about our investigative methods, the process, and the clues we have discovered until now. It might catch the murderer’s attention." She paused before continuing, "Of course, I’ll make the necessary adjustments to the case so that readers other than the killer won’t guess I’m writing about your sister’s case."

Alexander’s eyes narrowed. "That’s indeed a good idea. However, I won’t like it if the murderer decides to target you. Therefore, let me handle this matter. You can sit back and enjoy the show."

"Do you think it’s fair to me for you to make that decision after using me?" Avery leaned forward and protested by lightly punching the table with her fists. She continued, "I was the one who discovered the clues. I was also the one who came up with the idea. How could you remove me from the investigation without any hesitation?"

Alexander replied, "That was not my intention. I don’t want you to take the risk."

"You’re underestimating me," Avery shook her index finger and said seriously. "I’m not bragging, nor am I being arrogant. I know very well how capable I am. If the murderer finds me, I’m confident that I can deal with it."

Alexander smiled. "I’m not looking down on you. However, you’ve to remember you have a family."

Avery waved her hand. "Don’t be afraid. I won’t let anything happen to my family." She explained seriously, "The murderer knows that there would be complications if caution is not taken. I think the reason why Richard and you haven’t been able to find the murderer is because the murderer stopped making any movements after believing that your sister has been successfully killed." Avery smacked her lips and continued, "People like them don’t want to get caught up in a sticky situation. They might want to silence me if I become the target. However, it’d do them no good if they involve the people around me."

Avery did not voice out her decision that she would protect her family at no cost if she sensed any movement from the murderer.
