Chapter 69: Chapter 69

Even in the dark, Richard could feel the gazes of others. He said calmly, "Don’t look at me like that. I really want Lucy to disappear, but I’m not crazy enough to do this."

Everyone secretly heaved a sigh of relief. It was hard to tell if they were gratified or disappointed.

Someone said carefully, "In other words, someone wants Lucy and Alexander’s death more than us."

"If Lucy is really fine, the mastermind behind the accident would take action again, right? Should we sit back and watch them fight?"

Richard sneered. "If I were the murderer, I’d think so too. I guess they’d sit back and watch us fight against Alexander and Lucy."

The person who spoke fell silent. A moment later, someone said, "I’ve been keeping an eye on Alexander this week. He left Valemont City on a private jet three days ago. He must have gone overseas to pick up Lucy. He should be back in Valemont City tomorrow. As soon as his private jet lands, I’ll be able to track him."

At this point, there was a hint of ruthlessness in his eyes. "If Lucy is fine, make her not. In short, we can’t lose this battle."

The others were first shocked by his madness. Then, they fell silent, not daring to show their support or object. Richard was their backbone. The others were still inexperienced and had no chance to defeat Alexander. If they didn’t want to be kicked out of the core of Moran Group’s power, they had to protect Richard.

Richard’s eyes were filled with admiration. "That’s a good idea. However, Alexander must have made thorough preparations. He might be waiting for you to take action."

That person said coldly, "Wealth comes from danger. Instead of waiting for Alexander and Lucy to make a mistake or die, we should take the risk."

The others were even more silent. They agreed with the person, as long as they didn’t need to participate in those risky actions.

Richard said, "Alright, I’ll leave this to you."

The man said, "Don’t worry, I won’t do it myself, and I won’t leave any clues."

The secret room fell into a short silence.

Someone whispered, "Who do you think the mastermind is?"

Others said one after another, "It must be Lucy’s sworn enemy. She has offended so many people."

"Not necessarily," Richard sneered. "Let me teach you another lesson. The human heart is unpredictable. I’ve been fighting with Alexander and Lucy for so many years, but I’ve never thought of hiring someone to kill them. But those who don’t look so ruthless and even have a good relationship with them may have done so."

At this point, he put on a sinister smile. "Perhaps the mastermind is right beside us. They can kill anyone, not just Lucy."

Everyone felt a chill in their hearts when they heard this. The room seemed to grow colder.

"We need backup plans no matter what we do—more than one," Richard said as he stood up slowly. "It’s getting late. I should sleep. Have a discussion. If the sniping of Lucy doesn’t succeed, what should we do next? Tell me your solution tomorrow morning."

Richard’s men discussed all night. Alexander, meanwhile, spent the night with Lucy in the ward.

At 9 a.m., Avery walked into the ward wearing a mask and saw Alexander sitting by the bed, holding Lucy’s hand.

When he saw Avery enter, Alexander put down his sister’s hand and stood up. He said politely, "Dr. Annie, good morning."

Avery nodded and did not say anything. She observed Alexander first. Seeing that he looked good and energetic, she looked at Lucy.

The wound on Lucy’s head had healed a little more. She did not look like she had just undergone surgery a few days ago. Her face wasn’t as pale as before. She just needed a little bit of makeup to look good.

Avery flipped through the latest medical report and asked, "How long did your sister wake up last night? Did she say anything? How’s her mood?"

Alexander said, "My sister woke up three to four times in a row. The longest time was ten minutes, and the shortest was only ten seconds. Sometimes she didn’t open her eyes, but her fingers moved. She only said a few words. I did tell her a lot. I think she could hear everything I said."

Under the mask, Avery smiled. "Your sister is fine now. She just needs to rest well. I’ve prescribed some new medicine for her. Make sure she takes it in time. She should recover within a year."

"Thank you, Dr. Annie." Alexander looked at her deeply. "I’ll bring my sister back to Valemont City to attend the press conference this afternoon. I hope she’ll be able to make a short speech. Can you prescribe something for her?"

After that, he added, "I mentioned this to my sister. She said she had to go."

Avery thought for a moment and asked Freya to get two traditional medicines. "Take the big one half an hour in advance. It’ll keep her awake and in a good mental state, but it can only last for half an hour at most. After it’s over, let her take the small one. It’ll help with her sleep."

Alexander took the medicine solemnly. "Thank you, Dr. Annie."

Avery adjusted her glasses. "We should go back. I’ll get Freya to contact you about the car."

Then, without another word, she turned around and left.

Alexander did not ask her to stay or say anything more. He just sent her to the courtyard, watched her and her people get into the car, and then watched her leave.

Louis adjusted his glasses and said in a low voice, "Mr. Moran, don’t you think Dr. Annie looks a little similar to Miss Carter? Our people found out that Miss Carter has a twin sister. Do you think it could be Dr. Annie?"

Alexander glanced at him expressionlessly. "I checked before I came here. On the night Dr. Annie arrived in Dichester, Avery left Carter’s house. It’s said that she went to the mountains with the scientific expedition team to collect scientific data and won’t return within a week. Her phone has been switched off since that night. I can’t reach her."

"Huh?" Louis widened his eyes and kept adjusting his glasses. "You mean Miss Avery is... Dr. Annie?"

Alexander said calmly, "You can think whatever you want, but don’t tell anyone. I don’t want anyone to target her for now."

The elders in the Moran family were already in their 80s and 90s. They were all trying to live longer. If Dr. Annie’s identity was exposed, who knew how many rich old men who were afraid of death would look for her.

Louis also thought of something and nodded. "I understand."

Alexander did not say anything else. He returned to the ward, held Lucy’s hand, and said slowly, "Do you still remember Dad’s birthday party? It was his forty-sixth birthday. We held a big celebration. Mom was there too..."

Lucy’s hands trembled violently when he mentioned their mother’s death. Then, her entire body trembled, and she let out muffled and painful murmurs.

Alexander continued to recount the past, his voice filled with emotion. Only extreme pain could wake Lucy up completely.
