Chapter 77: Unworthy Of The Crown

Vanya felt that something weighed on Isadora’s mind, she had been acting strange since she awoke.

First, she loosened her warrior’s braid she got without permission. Wrapping the lengthy hair on top of her head like a bun.

Second, she kept adjusting her corset in discomfort as if there was pain in her chest.

Vanya wanted to ask if something had happened when she went off to her supposedly lookout but after mulling about it, she figured it was none of her business.

They were just teammates, a temporary union to ensure their survival. There was no need to get all cozy with the mannfae.

After a few hours of walking the eating woods—no Bone Eaters were in sight.

This was a rare situation. Vanya guessed they had already been taken out by the rest of the teams.

The rest of the teams had numbers to their advantage, something they lacked. But that saved them from fighting every hour.

She might survive it but Isadora won’t.

They made a stop at a flowing river to find food—any more berries and they would have to worry about something other than Bone Eaters.

Isadora took off her boots and rolled her pants, stepping in the cold river, she held onto the stick she had sharpened earlier with her dagger.

Her eyes followed the fish’s movement. Gulping, she thrust her stick into the water, but the fish darted away. After several attempts, she still hadn’t caught a single one.

Looking over to Vanya, who had already caught five!

Vanya turned her head to Isadora, seeing her progress, and almost snorted a laugh.

"I-It not funny. I did this a lot back in my hometown." She defended. "It’s just been a long time."

Vanya shook her head, before nudging her chin, a silent gesture they should get out of the cold river.

Isadora sighed in defeat and followed behind.

Rubbing two stones together, Vanya sparked a small fire and skewered the fish on a stick to roast.

"Are you sure this is okay?" Isadora asked before her gaze traveled around the eating woods, the terrifying sensation that something would emerge or the howling wind would come with the Eaters.

Vanya nodded and pointed to something, her eyes followed and landed on the corpse a mile away.

"Is that a Bone Eater?" Isadora couldn’t see it clearly because she did not have Fae’s sharp vision.

Yet, she could tell from the shiny skin under the sunlight it was one of them.

"What killed it then?"

Vanya shrugged.

’It could be the others,’ Isadora thought, certain. There was no other explanation for it.

Isadora took the half-done fish and bit on it, sighing at the taste. It wasn’t as she hoped but it was better than berries.

They ate in silence.

However, Vanya couldn’t silence her curious mind. She was curious about this mannfae who saved her life without a second thought.

Vanya made a gesture around her head.

Isadora paused, placing a hand on her head and she nodded.

"My hair?"

Vanya made a gesture of a length behind her and then the motion of a braid.

"Oh," Isadora made a sound before she swallowed a lump in her throat. "It didn’t feel right wearing it," she confessed.

’Kraven gave me that braid to mock me,’ she thought in disdain, the mere thought of him causing her distress and intense emotions.

Emotions she wanted to bury at the ends of the earth.

"I’m not a warrior, I don’t deserve it," she turned away.

It wasn’t right of her and she could suddenly understand the uproar of the ravenites. A warrior was a great title for them and the warrior’s braid was heavily respected.

Sheinsultedit.

Vanya stared at her with narrowed eyes knowing there was more to it but she didn’t push. Whatever weighed on her mind should be kept in private.

Suddenly a branch snapped, gaining attention.

Vanya was the first to get up and summon her weaves, ready to attack even a passing fly.

"Hmm... something smells good!"

The voice told them it wasn’t a Bone Eater.

Yet, Isadora kicked to her feet, placing her hand on her sword, but the moment the figures emerged her eyes fell wide when she set them on a familiar olive-eyed male.

"Dain," Isadora growled.

"Well well well... what do we have here?" Dain said.

He wasn’t alone, there were five behind him, four males and one female.

"I knew I smelt something delicious" he eyed the roasted fish and then the two maidens.

He blinked in shock the moment his eyes landed on the mannfae. "In Alda’s name, you’re alive?"

"Yes!" Isadora responded with clenched teeth, the urge to swing her blade was tempting. But she knew with the numbers this wasn’t a fight she could win.

Instead, she smirked and taunted him, "Disappointed?"

"My my, I underestimated you," Dain commented in awe, a smile taking his lips. "Seems like you’ve some potential after all... for a mannfae."

The others snickered at his last words.

Dain’s eyes veered to Vanya, who remained silent but gave a death glare. A frown pressed on his features as he looked away from her like she was a waste of space.

"So... how about you join our team? The greater the number the higher the chance of survival you have."

"What?" Isadora voiced, taken back by his offer, it was the last thing she expected.

"When we made our way here, there were corpses, not Bone Eaters though, you know what I mean."

Isadora visibly gulped.

In a heartbeat he closed the distance between them, Isadora gripped the hand of her sword tightly.

"You might get mistaken as a weed and get rooted out, it happens."

’A weed? What is he talking about?’ she thought confused.

Vanya snapped her fingers, gaining their attention. "Stop it, Dain, and leave us alone," she signed.

Isadora didn’t understand her but Dain seemed to and he wasn’t pleased.

"I-I have a teammate," Isadora voiced, taking a step back.

"A teammate?" He narrowed his eyes. "Or you mean a weed."

The moment he said those words, the others attacked Vanya.

"What are you doing?!" She yelled, drawing her sword.

"Whoa there!" Dain chuckled, effortlessly dodging her swing. "Feisty, huh? I think I’m starting to like you."
