Chapter 76: The Memories Before Greeting Daudi

(Trigger Warning: Abuse)

"Get away from me!"

Vanya opened her mouth to speak, but no words came. Desperate, She reached for her father’s shirt, but he yanked away, sending her tumbling to the floor.

"Don’t touch me!"

Vanya’s small frame shook against the floor, she didn’t like it when her father shouted, it was always loud and instilled fear in her, and that was when the hits came too.

"How many times have I told you not to disturb me?!"

But she just wanted to play. Her other sisters came to his study too and he created time for them.

Tears slid down her cheeks as her body trembled. The instant she heard him going through his drawer, she leveled her head and placed her hands on it.

Her father pulled out a whip and came toward her.

The rest of the world blurred.

Vanya stood with bruises covered on her body, clothes torn as she watched from behind the door.

"I love this father!"

"These are pretty!"

"What do you think father? Do I look like a princess?"

"Of course you do."

Vanya leaned closer to watch, they were flaunting the gifts father got from his travels.

Her father was a Jarla, a high born of the fae society so he was always extravagant with his gifts.

Vanya never got to receive any of that. Her mother died after giving birth to her and what made it worse was that, even at the age when she should have been speaking, she couldn’t produce a single sound.

She was considered a disgrace to her father’s name. It was disrespectful to his title and so the wealthy man in the town was only known to have four daughters instead of five.

"Go away!" her sister pushed her away. "Don’t touch me!"

’Don’t touch me.’

Those three words had been ingrained deep within her soul.

They treated her like a disease, only the servants in the house treated her right. They provided for her .

Vanya couldn’t communicate with anyone until she sneaked into her father’s study oneday and found a book that taught her what she knew.

After months of relentless practice, she ran to her father the moment he arrived and signed in front of him.

Her smile faded when her father gave her nothing but a repulsive look. Before beating her into a pulp.

One day, Vanya made a decision that changed her life forever.

She ran away from home and never looked back.

Vanya slowly opened her eyes, her mind overcome by the forgotten memories.

It is believed when your last prayers are said to Lifara and Daudi come to claim your soul, your mind relieves memories.

Some believe they relieve their enjoyable memories after prayers but Vanya had never had one. It was fitting her painful ones were the last thing she could think of.

But why was she gazing upon the bark of the hallowed tree? Where is Daudi?

The realization struck her. She was alive!

Quickly, she checked her arm and her eyes widened in shock, there was nothing there, not even a hint of it, like the bone eater’s wound just vanished.

How was this possible? No skin weaver can completely erase the state of a wound.

’Isadora,’ she thought, and that was when her eyes moved and found Isadora fast asleep beside her.

’She saved my life,’ she thought with a frown on her face. ’Why?’

Her slanted eyes landed on her ankle still banded together with the sticks. She had healed her and yet ignored her wounds?

Vanya couldn’t describe the emotions suddenly coming to the surface, tucking deeply in her chest.

She looked away and swallowed hard. That answer to her question would be gotten when she awakes.

However the rest of the day, Isadora didn’t budge in her sleep. Vanya checked if she was still breathing to make sure. And she was.

Vanya got worried when she slept through to the next day, making it a total of two days of sleep.

’Why am I worried?’ she thought puzzled by her action. ’I saved her life and she saved mine, the debt is paid.’

Isadora suddenly stirred awake, groaning, her half-opened eyes drifting to Vanya who stared at her with the same look she gave the Bone eaters, alert and wary.

"Vanya!" Isadora said, forcing her body to sit up, it felt like a log. "Are you alright?"

In silence Vanya passed a look to her arm, completely healed with no traces of the wound.

Isadora sighed in relief, she thought she didn’t finish before she passed out. It was a weight lifted off her shoulder after seeing this.

Because if it hadn’t been her encounter with Kraven she wouldn’t have gotten so much worse.

She was burning with a serious fever and Isadora panicked thinking she wouldn’t be able to save her life. It took a heavy toll on her body but she didn’t mind it.

A smile found Isadora’s lips, one she rarely gave. "I’m happy you’re okay" she said still overcomed by the guilt of leaving her alone.

Overcome by many things.

Vanya stared at her with narrowed eyes, as if she was trying to decipher a puzzle given to her.

"How long was I asleep for?"

Vanya raised two fingers.

"It shouldn’t have taken that long," she murmured.

Her reply gave Vanya the impression that this wasn’t the first time it happened.

"Because of me we’re far behind, I’m sorry."

Vanya raised three fingers signifying the days left.

Another relief washed over her, it was a good thing they still had more time left.

Vanya sighed, nudging her chin as she crawled out of the hallowed tree.

Isadora quickly gathered her things and followed behind. She hissed when the sun hit her eyes.

But the energy from the bright light was welcoming, she closed her eyes and replenished the sun’s energy.

A tap on her shoulder broke the moment. Vanya pulled out a wrapped material.

"For me?"

She nodded.

Isadora took it and unwrapped the material. It was filled with berries, her stomach growling at the mere sight of them.

Vanya’s lips briefly twitched for a smile.

"Thank you!" Isadora gasped before shoving them in her mouth nonstop.
