Chapter 48: The Voice Of A Stray

"Brother!"

"Eris!"

"BROTHER!"

Rav sprinted through the woods at full speed, running past the bushes. Even as the sharp roots cut into his skin, he didn’t flinch. He couldn’t hesitate —not now, not when she needed him more than ever.

"BROTHER!"

Her scream grew more agonizing, fueling his need to reach her. He stopped when his eyes caught a glimpse of smoke ahead.

"Eris," he said, with quivering eyes.

"Brother."

Suddenly, his point of view shifted. It wasn’t the distance he was trying to cover anymore—he was already there.

"You came late."

His eyes widened in horror when he saw Eris tied to a tree and her body on fire, the huge flame blazing around her small form and her skin peeled off.

His horrified eyes scanned the scene, landing on the cloaked figures kneeling, faces to the ground.

"How could you let them do this to me?"

He turned his wide eyes back to Eris, her body slowly fading away from the flames, even her tears dried up because of the intensity of the fire.

"No!" Rav shook his head, tears running down his face. "No!" He tried to step forward, but his legs wouldn’t move.

Lowering his gaze, he saw the cloaked figures now clutching his legs, holding him back from reaching his sister. There were many of them, and with every second, their numbers multiplied by thousands.

"Rav."

A cold chill found his spine, and slowly he turned back to his nightmare but it wasn’t Eris being burnt alive... It was Isadora.

"NO!"

Rav startled awake, sitting up and trying to catch his breath, he held his chest when a tightening pain came forth.

His teeth clenched and a silent cry followed.

He grasped his chest tightly until the pain subsided and a breath of relief found him.

When was the last time he had a nightmare like this? He couldn’t remember. Maybe the stress was getting to him.

He gulped when the final image of his dream haunted him, a deep fear crawling up his spine and sending goosebumps across his skin.

"Isadora," he said, getting off his bed.

He wore a tunic and walked to her door, knocking softly. But as he did, the door creaked open on its own.

"Can I come in?" he asked just to be sure before stepping inside.

The room was empty, and the bed neatly made, with no evidence she had been there last night.

Did she not come back last night?

A sudden wave of regret washed over him like a storm. He recalled the look in her eyes when he failed to respond to her question.

He mentally cursed himself, for being so stupid. He shouldn’t have done that and made a mental note to apologize to her when he got the chance.

Rav made his way to the training grounds when he noticed a crowd. What could it be this time? His thoughts quickly shift to Isadora, prompting him to rush on ahead.

"Nyssa," Rav said, standing beside her.

Her arms were crossed, and a sour expression on her face. Nyssa was always known for her moody nature due to her strict personality, but he had never seen her like this—so agitated.

Rav turned to the center of attention and just as he thought it was Isadora.

Isadora was seated on the bridge watching the crowd. She didn’t mean to cause such attention but it seemed to be becoming a regular thing wherever she goes.

With a jump she came down from the bridge, her fist clenched as she prepared to speak.

"I did not cheat the Spine!" she announced, her eyes briefly landing on Rav but she quickly looked away.

She needed her strength for this. Turned out she was bothered by what they thought of her, she already was labeled a stray but then a cheater? When she did no such thing.

Keeping her head high up she declared. "I’d like permission to run the Spine again"

Murmurs erupted around the area.

"Silence!" Nyssa boomed and on cue everyone shut their mouth, she unfolded her arms and stepped forward, hands on her waist.

Isadora gulped, her height was intimidating to the last bit but she kept her eyes focused on hers, refusing to back down.

This caused a smirk from Nyssa watching the stray grow some balls.

"And why should I give permission?" She voiced, turning to the rest of them. "Logi’s designs are perfect, it was difficult for a lot of you and yet..." she pointed to Isadora. "...She was able to cross it in one night?" she scoffed. "I call that a straight lie!"

"I kept trying until I could—"

"Silence!" Nyssa snapped, but then sighed. "I’ll give you mercy," she began. "Leave this place and never step foot here again. You did not only insult the Spine but the grounds, where the blood of Lord Raven was spilled!"

Her last words made the crowd tense, and suddenly, it felt as though predator eyes were upon her, ready to eat her alive and spill her bones out.

Rav had enough. He stepped forward and grabbed Isadora’s arm to get her attention. Whatever she was doing was getting out of hand. He never knew her to be such an attraction for trouble.

"That’s enough" he whispered to her with pleading eyes.

She was setting herself up for slaughter. They won’t just hate anymore but might try to do far worse.

"Nothing you say will change anything,"

Who would believe the words of a stray over their commander? Her plan to get them to listen will fail before it even starts.

Isadora glared at him which caught him off guard. That was the word she hated. Back at the brothel she didn’t have a voice, completely surrendered in the hands of Dashwell only to be discarded.

"I spilled blood on that Spine too," she said in a low tone.

Rav frowned as a sudden feeling overwhelmed him, it was a prey not refusing to stand by and be eaten.

Isadora pulled her arm away from Rav’s hold and stepped forward.

"Then I challenge you to a duel, Nyssara, for my right."

At the top of the tower, Cai smacked his forehead and exclaimed "Alda!"

This was why she came to him in the morning and asked how things are done?

He gripped his head and clenched his teeth. "I’ve killed her!"
