Chapter 136: The Tables Turn (1)
Nyssa’s frown deepened at Isadora’s declaration. It was not what she expected.
She aimed for Isadora to cower away, proving her words true and getting the Ravenites to hate her more.
That was the only reason she made this public in the first place and triggered their doubt.
After what happened yesterday; When Isadora disrupted the spar, it’d been the talk of the Court that Isadora might be Lord Raven’s lover.
That instilled more rage in Nyssa, she’d strived to earn that title for winters and Isadora claimed it without lifting a finger. She was nothing more than a stray and she dared to be shameless.
But then it became the perfect means to an end, using it to weaken Isadora’s resolve.
Yet now, as Nyssa stared at Isadora who had a burning look in her eyes, she didn’t look like someone who wanted to back down.
She should. After what she told her earlier in that corridor. She shouldn’t be mentally sane to do anything and give up in humiliation.
’Is she pushing herself?’ Nyssa thought. It had to be the only explanation she still dared to have such guts.
But to what end? There was nothing she could accomplish here.
’You’re something, Isadora, but it doesn’t change anything.’
"Go on then, your penalty awaits you."
Isadora exhaled sharply as she walked toward the penalty zone. Gods! The boulder was more prominent than her, how on earth could she drag it to the other side?
Logically it wasn’t possible for her.
Isadora grabbed the ropes, ignoring the audience, and began pulling.
The damn thing didn’t budge.
Isadora placed the big ropes on her shoulder and kept pulling as hard as she could, determined to make it work. Her struggling sound filled the air as well as her raspy breathing.
Nyssa eyed Isadora who kept trying to do the impossible. This girl was very foolish, everyone who watched thought so, and yet no one mocked or laughed.
Nyssa noticed this and her anger rose to the surface beyond control. This was a laughable situation but no one welcomed it.
They looked impressed.
Despite knowing there was no way in the seven gods’ name she could move that boulder, she still chose to do it.
They were all impressed by this.
Nyssa’s breath shuddered as her plan to turn the crowd against Isadora failed. All Isadora did was growl and drag in vain, yet she somehow turned the tables against her.
Isadora kept pulling with all her might; her teeth ground together, sweat dripping from her face as her boots dug firmly into the ground.
Her shoulder felt like it would snap—not just from the thick rope biting into her skin, but from the unmoving boulder behind her, refusing to budge no matter how much strength she poured into it.
Was this how different she was from a full-blooded Fae? That even a damn boulder wouldn’t budge?
Gods! She hated this even more and so she kept going as that anger and pain burned in her bones.
Her hands trembling beyond control, black dots coating her vision and just when she thought she could keep going despite all that, the rope snapped and she fell to the ground.
Her face dug into the dirt as she forced her body to sit. Her breath was harsh and unstable. Her muscles ache not because of her endless push but because the toll of last night draining her body.
A splitting headache followed and for a minute she thought she would pass out.
"Lord Raven!"
Nyssa turned sharply and set her eyes on Kraven marching toward the scene. A smile found her lips as she stepped forward to greet him.
"Kraven, I was just—"
Kraven grabbed her jaw in an iron hold, stunning Nyssa and everyone. His grip was so tight it almost crushed her jaw to pieces.
Nyssa stared at him with unbelievable eyes as she struggled against him but the look Kraven pinned her with caused her action to cease as she went utterly still in the face of death itself.
Kraven leaned closer. "There is only one reason you’re still alive, Nyssara Gundrun." Each tone he forced out was like a blade slicing into her skin.
"Your loyalty!" he seethed, bloodlust rolling off him in waves, it suffocated the entire area and made everyone tremble in fear.
Nyssa shook against his hold, her eyes wide in pure terror. Kraven had never acted this way before, he had never looked at her like this. Like a pound of flesh, he wanted to dissect.
It wasn’t right. He shouldn’t!
"But even that loyalty is becoming unnecessary, you’re expendable."
"You’re hurting me, Kraven," Nyssa whispered. "Please stop..."
But her pleas only fueled Kraven’s desire to tear her jaw from her face.
"Be grateful to the gods I’m only doing that," he said in a low dangerous tone, a promise in his gaze that shook Nyssa to the core.
"Do this again and I swear to the seven gods I’ll bleed you dry making sure you’re alive as I do so. Then I’ll rip your eyes out of your skull as I relish in the sound of your screams. I’m going to enjoy every bit of it." He pushed her away causing her to stumble backward.
Nyssa’s heartbeat thundered in her chest on the verge of breaking her ribcage.
"And the rest of you..." Kraven said, casting a brief look to the warriors. "Tell me, is this how you treat your Lady Raven?!"
His bold declaration shocked them, causing the warriors to bow their heads in shame.
"I’ll not tolerate any disrespect toward her!"
Nyssa scoffed at his words, the tears on the verge of falling. Her bloodshot eyes fixated on Kraven as he walked past her as if she was nothing.
Isadora tensed as Kraven came to her, her legs wouldn’t move and she wanted nothing more but to get away.
Kraven crouched in front of Isadora, and he did not look happy. "What exactly were you trying to accomplish by leaving my side?" he said through clenched teeth. "You’ve got a lot of explaining to do, love."
