Chapter 121: She doesn’t Deserve Such A Fate
Isadora’s eyes trembled as the memory of that night clicked in. The swirls of conflicting emotions drowned her mind.
What she felt when she tried to ease him. The burden living inside his head and the presence was unnatural.
Isadora looked away, unable to pause the chaotic feeling twisting her lower stomach. She chewed the inside of her mouth to redirect the sensation, but she only felt heavier and her shoulders dropped.
"You’re right," she mumbled, tone heavy and shaky, choking between the gnawing realization. "He’s not a beast I can tame." She rose to her feet.
Rav’s expression turned regretful. He had aimed to say that so she wouldn’t have stupid ideas like trying what she did with the sigil beast. It would only backfire and cost her life.
"Isa..." he began softly, reaching to take her hand but she took a step back. A foreign pain in his chest came to the surface at that mere action.
She looked like a scared little creature retreating away from danger.
Was she afraid of him?
The mere thought broke his heart.
"I should go back to the training grounds." She forced a smile on her lips. "I haven’t completed my task." She turned on her heels and walked without hesitation.
Isadora stepped out of the door and shut it behind her, releasing a shaky breath, and closed her eyes briefly.
When she opened them she found Logi leaning against the wall with folded arms.
At the sight of her, a teasing smile found his lips. He pushed off the wall. "I thought you might be spending more time there... he was beaten up badly. In all fairness, it was a spar to show what an enemy would be capable of even if they don’t bare their fangs at first. It’s justified."
Isadora walked past him but halted her steps, voicing a simple request. "I need to be alone."
Logi narrowed his eyes at her words.
She turned to him. "Please."
A large silence passed between them, the strong waft coming through, making the lanterns hanging on the trees to dangle.
"I’ll come find you later, little one."
Isadora faced ahead and strode away. Logi watched her repeating form until he peeled his eyes away.
He stepped into the house
Rav was wiping the blood off his face with a towel, the white wool material drenched in it.
"You should have told her." Logi’s voice came from behind. "She’s his mate, she has the right to know what his thirst entails."
"I should have known you were eavesdropping," Rav said, dropping the towel in the bowl.
"I’m Just making sure you don’t do anything that’ll cost your head. A trait you’re currently fond of."
Rav turned to him with a confused expression plastered on his face. "You’re not making sense. We all saw it, his thirst got out of control," he said, opening and closing his right arm, the same one he almost lost if Isadora hadn’t intervened.
Logi clicked his tongue as he dragged the chair from under the table and took a seat. "Oh poor Rav, so slow-witted."
"Are you here to insult me, Logi?"
"Yes. And to tell you to tread carefully next time."
"What are you talking about?"
"Why did you think he lashed out like that, hm? You think it’s because of the thirst?" Logi chuckled, his shoulder vibrating.
It was deeply amusing how Rav and Nyssa thought it was simply Kraven losing control in the moment of a spar. It was far from it.
"As a self-proclaimed child of Visindi, I’m sure you know." Rav huffed knowing Logi was about to throw it in his face again. Whatever it was.
"Yes, of course, I always know and since I’m the only one with a functioning brain cell I’ll let you know even though you’re annoying."
"What could possibly make Kraven like that aside from his thirst, he lives and breath with that thing and I assure you, nothing else can—"
"He was jealous, Rav."
Rav paused at Logi’s revelation as a frown took over his features. "Jealous?" he said the word as if it were the last thing Kraven would ever feel.
And in his defense he was right to think so, something like that was not Kraven’s personality. He prided himself in many things and jealousy was not one of them.
"You’re not making sense."
"We can’t defy nature Rav, the same way Kraven can’t. He has a mate, he’s bound to feel things."
Rav’s body stiffened at the reminder, a truth that kept shooking him to the core. Logi was right even though he didn’t want him to be.
Kraven does feel the mate bond, which means other emotions he wasn’t conditioned to feel... he eventually would.
Rav gulped and said. "Then it was my mistake if I did something to get him jealous, however, it was not my intention and..." he paused. Kraven’s taunting words dropped his mind.
Kraven really was jealous as Logi stated. But it was hard to tell with his thirst on the surface.
"The mate bond shouldn’t manifest, Isadora can’t feel it," he added.
"But he does. The goddess of love is very intentional about things like this. Praise Elska," Logi said, rising to his feet. "I bet it feels like Kraven is splitting into two at the moment, torn between desire and thirst. I can already imagine him running more mad than he was before."
A vein bulged against Rav’s forehead. "This was why the pact was made!" he seethed, but then his eyes saddened. "We made that pact between the ruling council because we knew how much having a mate would affect him. We would lose him quickly... and history will just repeat itself," he added the last words in a murmur.
"We can’t take Isadora’s life, we can’t," Rav said with pleading eyes, begging for something.
"I already stated we won’t, Rav, don’t look at me like that."
"But for the right cause we should, we’d be freeing her from a fate worse than death."
Logi blinked at his words. "Yes, we would be freeing her. Isadora’s future is blackened as long as she walks this realm as his mate. But we can’t... not when he has some interest in her, which none of us anticipated in the first place."
Rav’s fist clenched at his side. Logi’s words unleashed an emotion within him. Envy.
The thought of someone as sweet and brave as Isadora being completely bound to someone who can’t honor the mate bond properly was aggravating.
She would never get the happiness she deserved, not with Kraven.
"But look at what happened today, yes?" Logi began placing his hands on the table. "Her plead stopped him, normally something like that we would have used force and then he would have gone berserk."
Rav huffed. "It was luck, Logi, don’t expect it to happen for the second time."
His chest tightened as he said his next words. "Maybe we should limit their interactions somehow. If he keeps experiencing all these with his thirst growing out of control, it could get worse."
Logi frowned deeply at his suggestion. "I love my hands, stupid Rav, I’m not about to get them ruined again." he turned his back. "I appreciate the suggestion but I’m not interested in poking a bloodthirsty demon."
"He doesn’t deserve her, she doesn’t deserve such a fate! I’ve seen it happen, Logi, I know what awaits her in this life and I don’t want that for her!" Rav enforced.
"I’m sure you have. You have known Kraven for longer than I do. You saw his downfall firsthand." He looked over his shoulder, an emotion in eyes that stalled Rav.
"The gods always cast their game dice." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a brown dice, worn and weathered by winters of use.
His thumb pressed against the piece like he wanted to crush it but it was just a gesture to feel. Then a grin spread his lips as he turned to Rav who pinned him with an intense stare.
"Let’s make a wager, Rav." He held the dice between his fingers and raised it to his eye as if trying to peek inside the small piece.
"I’m not stupid enough to make a wager with you."
"Ho, but you’ll love this one. I wager that Isadora can tame Kraven in a winter time... if she passes you back off, and leave the rest to their fates"
Rav teeth clenched. "She can’t tame him, Logi!"
"If she fails I’ll do everything within my power to ensure Kraven loses his obsession... even if it means my death."
"And how on earth can you achieve such a feat?!"
He laughed. "You still doubt what I’m capable of after spending all these winters with me?" He mused. "We built this place! I ensure this place... a greater contribution than you ever did."
Rav scoffed looking away. "I gave far more than you could ever know."
"I know a way to break the mate bond," Logi declared.
