Chapter 105: To Heal A Mind Is A Burden
After Isadora had finally stopped crying, they sat on the bed, hands locked and Isadora occasionally sobbing.
Vanya sighed, knowing it would take some time. She couldn’t begin to imagine how torturous it must’ve been for her, eating herself up about her death and not being present.
Vanya released her grip and signed. "Dain was a little bit right though..."
Isadora’s heartbeat spiked. The mention of it did not decrease her worry. She should have still been there, she owed her that much.
"I almost died. The battle was intense." Her hands were shaky as she conveyed.
The memories of her battle still clung to her and it had been nightmares ever since.
Nightmares of drowning as a beast ate her alive bit by bit. It kept her awake at night, eyes of deep pools of liquid azure, reflecting the ever-changing hues of the ocean depths.
Who knew such a sigil beast would instill such fear? They were worthy of their title.
Isadora gulped. "Did you really fight the demon of the ocean?"
"Yes. I walked into the tunnel and the next thing I knew was I was underwater and got attacked by a sækonur."
"Sæko..." Isadora mumbled, confused, not understanding the last word she signed.
"Sækonur. Dreadful creatures and the demoness of the ocean. They are very vicious, the creature used its pent-up rage against me and I barely survived. But trust me I did not pull my punches and being underwater was an advantage for me too."
Isadora couldn’t help it, she chuckled, her shoulders shaking from amusement.
The way Vanya depicted everything was both dramatic and funny, she was always so expressive with her face and it was not hard to miss any detail.
"What’s funny?" Vanya signed, perplexed, pondering if something was on her face.
"Nothing, just..." Isadora smiled. "I still can’t believe you’re alive." She took her hand and held onto it tightly.
Vanya had no idea how much of an impact she had in Isadora’s life. Her death would have wrecked her.
Vanya took her hand, and pressed it to her chest where her heart was beating and signed. "Is this enough to convince you? The sound of my heartbeat."
Isadora nodded like a child causing a smile on Vanya’s lips but it fell suddenly.
"I heard you faced the Snákr. I was bedridden at the time but Cai gave me the full story, I wish I could have been there."
"I wish I was too at yours..." Isadora said as her gaze lowered. "I hesitated at the last minute." she raised her gaze.
"What made you come then?"
Isadora’s pulse raced at the thought of Kraven. A reminder of something she wished to forget and the tightening sensation in her chest.
It hurts thinking about him and she wanted nothing more than to erase this feeling.
Her emotions were tormenting her again. What he did at that bath was unforgettable, urging her to kill him when she was not emotionally sane at the moment.
The most perfect thing for a person like Kraven to do. Just the thought of it caused her chest to burn at the fresh memory
"Are you okay?" Vanya signed quickly and held onto her, the color drained from her skin and she looked far paler than ever.
Isadora only offered a nod and a forced smile.
This was another thing Vanya knew she shouldn’t question or push. However, another still bothered her.
"Is it true you tamed a Snákr?"
Isadora narrowed her eyes in disarray. "What do you mean by tamed?"
’She doesn’t know what she did?’ Vanya thought, gulping.
"I just felt what’s inside its head, just like I told you before, how my weaves were going out of control. It happened again but this time it happened at the right moment, thank the gods," Isadora said, sighing.
Vanya only nodded stiffly, but then she signed. "Like how you explained before, you felt something and thought to ease it?"
"The Snákr’s pain, it was too great, it suffered so much and I just wanted to..."
"Take it away," Vanya signed.
Isadora nodded. "I think I did and after that, everything was too much to contain, and then..." she paused as suddenly a memory found her.
When she walked out of the arena she saw someone.
"You played with fire again, Isadora."
She saw Kraven and those were his words.
Isadora held her head, suddenly feeling faint as her features morphed into discomfort. "I still feel heavy."
"You still need rest."
"I’ve rested for a moon and it was... terrifying."
"I think this easing or healing a mind is not something you should do often. The skin weavers take the pain and wound from their patients and in return, they feel the pressure in their hands. That’s why skin weaving abilities are very fragile," Vanya explained.
And Isadora was a mannfae, no wonder the toll was great each time she healed a wound. Vanya could still remember her sleeping for days.
"And you healed a mind, Isadora, a sigil beast, the toll will be greater especially when you take it upon yourself, you need to be careful. Whatever this ability is, it shouldn’t be used carelessly."
Isadora nodded in understanding, she knew what she did was risky and it could have possibly killed her.
However, feeling what the beast felt, she couldn’t let it live through that another day. It was identical to hers but greater.
Or maybe it was the thought of Kraven’s mind that made her scared for the beast. No one deserved to have such an emotional burden, she wouldn’t wish that for her worst enemy.
Against her better judgment, she thought about him again. Dear gods, she just wanted to erase her mind of him but he kept slipping in through the forts she was trying to build around her.
’I need to build it higher!’ Isadora thought determined.
Vanya clicked her tongue, watching her get lost in her head again. It is far worse now.
’Poor girl, so young and rotting away in her head. I need to watch her more.’
