Chapter 46: Forgotten?

After comforting Karina, her mood began to shift. Her once lifeless expression had been replaced by a cheerful glow, her blue eyes now sparkling with life. It was a beautiful sight. But just as we approached the door of the church to head outside, she suddenly hesitated. Her steps slowed, and her small fingers tightened around mine.

I glanced down at her. "Karina?" I asked gently. "Why are you hesitating?"

She lowered her gaze, her voice trembling. "I... I’m scared. What if... they discriminate against me again?"

Her words pierced me.

This wasn’t just shyness. It was fear born from deep-rooted trauma. Nearly her entire life, she had been shunned, rejected, treated like a curse. Without me here, I doubted she would’ve had the courage to take even a single step outside. She might’ve just stayed curled up in that endless void of sorrow, never seeing the light again.

I sighed softly and reached down to pat her head. "It’s alright," I said reassuringly. "I’m here. I’ll protect you."

She didn’t respond right away, but her trembling eased. My gentle pat seemed to soothe her. A faint warmth bloomed in her expression, and she gave a tiny nod.

With her tiny hand in mine, we slowly opened the door together.

What greeted us was a surprise.

The village was celebrating. People were gathered with cheerful smiles, laughter echoing through the streets. The once dark and cursed land now felt alive, as if hope itself had returned.

Carl was the first to notice us. His eyes lit up, and he stepped forward, beaming. "He did it!" he declared to everyone. "That human really saved us!"

He approached with a grin and handed me a thick, old tome bound in worn leather, along with a pouch of clinking coins. "Sea Barrage Spellbook. 450 gold coins, as promised."

I took the spellbook with surprise in my eyes, but before I could even thank him, Carl’s gaze dropped to Karina. His expression shifted to one of curiosity.

"And who’s this little girl?" he asked, tilting his head. "Is she with you?"

Karina’s hand tensed in mine.

She looked up at them, wide-eyed, stunned... and utterly silent.

They didn’t remember her.

I froze.

She had lived in this very village. She was one of them. And now, their expressions showed nothing but confusion. Not a single flicker of recognition.

Before I could respond, the staff floating near me finally broke its silence. Its voice was solemn, almost mournful.

"That girl you saved... Fate has changed," it said. "She was supposed to become the Primordial Demoness. But now, because you intervened, a large part of her past has been erased. Forgotten by the world."

"Only you and me remember her now."

I stood speechless.

So that’s why. Fate had rewritten itself—devouring the memory of her existence in exchange for a different future. I looked down at her. She had figured it out too.

Her smile was bitter, her beautiful face framed by her long blue hair and the small curved horns that marked her dragon lineage. She was smart enough to see the blank stares in their eyes.

I sighed in frustration. Just hours ago, this very village had spoken of her sorrow, her tragedy. And now... now they didn’t even know who she was.

Looking down at her again, I saw the flicker of sadness forming in her expression. I couldn’t let her go through that again.

I gently lifted her into my arms. She gasped softly, caught off guard, but didn’t resist.

"You can consider her my daughter," I declared, smiling confidently as I activated my Exorcist Form.

In a flash, my appearance shifted. My hair on a shade of deep ocean blue, and a Two curved horn emerged from my forehead, matching Karina’s.

Gasps filled the crowd.

Carl’s mouth opened slightly in shock. "you two look alike..." he muttered.

They assumed the resemblance of eyes in Karina inheriting the traits of her "mother." It was the easiest explanation their minds could settle on. Karina blushed, burying her face against my shoulder in embarrassment.

I smiled and turned back to Carl. "Thank you. The village is very generous."

I accepted the pouch of gold coins and the spellbook.

Curious, I glanced at the tome in my hand. Sea Barrage. Carl noticed my expression and explained, "That spell is from our ancestors. It’s very powerful. If mastered, it’s said to be able to injure even an 8-Star enemy."

I blinked in surprise, clutching the spellbook a little tighter. "This is... an Ancient Tier spell?" I asked.

Carl and a few others nodded.

"No one here is really combative anymore," Carl said softly. "Most of us just want to live in peace. That spell would do more good in the hands of someone like you."

I hadn’t expected such sincerity. I looked down at Karina, who was still quietly nestled in my arms.

She tugged gently on my sleeve and whispered in my ear.

"Can we go now?" Her voice was low, barely audible. "Seeing them makes me really uncomfortable..."

That whisper alone said more than anything.

I understood her completely.

Ending the Exorcist Form, I turned to the villagers and gave them a polite smile. "Thank you all for your kindness. But we have important things to take care of. Could we have a way out?"

Without hesitation, the crowd parted. They stepped aside respectfully, forming a clear path out of the village.

As we walked, I shook hands with each of them, offering brief nods of gratitude.

Karina clung gently to me, her arms around my neck as I carried her on my back. Her weight was light, but the responsibility I now carried felt heavier than any quest I had taken before.

I sighed, glancing at her over my shoulder.

"I was supposed to just complete a quest," I murmured to myself with a faint smile. "Now I’m a father... to a child of fate."

Karina had already fallen asleep.

She was exhausted—not just from today, but from a lifetime of pain. And now, finally, she could rest in someone’s arms.

As I carried her toward the horizon, a soft breeze passed through the glowing seaweed fields. The village faded behind us,

Time passed.

We finally reached a more crowded part of the sea—the outskirts of the Fish Race Kingdom. I let out a long sigh of relief. After everything that had happened, it felt surreal to see signs of civilization again.

Just then, Karina stirred on my back. Her tiny fingers gripped my shoulders as she blinked sleepily, her eyes adjusting to the filtered light of the Kingdom

When her gaze fell upon the towering coral walls and bustling figures of the Fish Race kingdom, her whole face lit up.

"Wah... Look!" she exclaimed, rubbing her eyes in disbelief. "That village is so big!"

I chuckled softly at her innocent excitement. "That’s not a village, Karina. That’s a kingdom. One of the biggest cities in the sea region. It’s where a lot of Fish Race nobles live,And You’ll see lots of strange and beautiful things here."

Her eyes widened as she turned her head, trying to take in everything at once. Glowing jellyfish floated like lanterns above the streets. Spiral coral towers shimmered with veins, and elegant sea creatures drifted peacefully alongside aquatic citizens.

"I-It’s amazing," she whispered in awe.

We continued walking as I explained Everything about the Kingdom wnd some other things like the other Race She nodded attentively...

She was learning quickly, doing her best to understand this new world around her.

Eventually, we reached a modest coral apartment complex nestled on the kingdom’s edge, away from the noisier market streets. It wasn’t fancy, but it was safe and quiet. I led her up the winding staircase, pulled out my key, and unlocked the door to my room.

As we stepped inside, Karina looked around curiously. It was a simple space—one large bed, a wooden table with two chairs, some storage drawers, and a crystal lamp attached to the ceiling for light. A small window on the side let in soft rays of sea-glow from the outside.

The moment we sat down, however, a loud grumble broke the silence.

Karina froze.

Her cheeks turned bright red as her stomach betrayed her hunger.

I couldn’t help but chuckle, doing my best to suppress the laugh. "Looks like someone’s hungry," I teased gently.

She looked down, fidgeting with her fingers nervously. "S-Sorry..."

I smiled, shaking my head. "You don’t have to apologize for being hungry."

Without saying more, I stood up and headed downstairs to order food. There was a small tavern attached to the apartment for guests and travelers. I handed over five gold coins and requested a full-course meal to be brought to our room—grilled shrimp, salted eel, warm kelp stew, sweet coral pudding, and even a sea-berry drink.

It was a bit of a feast, but I figured it was worth it. After everything she’d been through, she deserved something special.

When I returned, arms full of food trays, I found her exactly where I’d left her—sitting nervously on the bed, her fingers twisting together anxiously.

The moment she saw me, her eyes darted to the trays, then back to my face.

I set the food down on the table, walked over, and gently patted her head. "Hmm. Don’t worry," I said with a warm smile. "The food’s here now."

Her tense shoulders relaxed, and her expression brightened with relief. "Really?" she asked softly.

I nodded and stepped aside to let her see the meal I had prepared.

Her eyes sparkled. "It smells... really good."

"Eat as much as you want. It’s our little celebration," I said, pulling out a chair for her.

She sat down carefully, glancing at me a few times as if unsure if it was really okay. When I gave her a reassuring nod, she began eating slowly at first—like someone who wasn’t used to warm meals—but soon she was devouring the food with an adorable enthusiasm that made me smile the entire time.

As I watched her eat, a strange warmth settled in my chest. I hadn’t expected this. I was just supposed to complete a quest. Maybe get some loot and move on.

But now...

i sighed helplessly i have a little girl here whose fate had been rewritten.
