The Prime Minister's Darling -
Chapter 938 - 938 428 Young Master Hou (two updates)
Chapter 938: 428 Young Master Hou (two updates) Chapter 938: 428 Young Master Hou (two updates) Princess Xinyang was fortunate not to suffer from depression, or else she might have been driven to illness by Long Yi sooner or later.
Princess Xinyang could, of course, have ordered Long Yi to set down, discard, or throw away the cage, but it seemed that Long Yi, perhaps guessing that his young master liked to give orders, simply scooped up the cage and whoosh—dashed away!
All that Princess Xinyang saw was the back of his slick-shaven head, almost as if it read–––I’m running away, I can’t hear you!
Yujin’s face was indescribable. She turned to Princess Xinyang, opened her mouth, and said, “Princess …”
Princess Xinyang kept a cold face and casually let the curtain fall.
The Imperial City was under martial law, with strict checks not only on those leaving but also on those entering.
The City Guards at the gates were on high alert when suddenly a gust of wind blew past, and a flicker seemed to sweep before their eyes.
The guards exchanged puzzled looks.
“What just happened?”
“I—I don’t know, did you see that?”
“It seemed like something passed by, but then again, it seemed like nothing.”
As they looked toward the city, where not a soul was to be seen on the vacant streets, they wondered if they were seeing things—seeing things en masse…
Soon enough, Princess Xinyang’s carriage arrived at the city gate. The City Guard inspected the Token and respectfully saluted, allowing the carriage with Princess Xinyang to pass.
Meanwhile, the Imperial Guards who had gone to capture the assassin were slowly realizing that the assassin might not have gone ahead. They turned back and, halfway through, discovered the “stolen” prison cart and the four “ya-yi” who were already cold and lifeless.
Another group of Imperial Guards found the real ya-yi, who had been knocked out, in a patch of grass three miles away.
After the ya-yi regained consciousness, they recounted their experience of being robbed.
“The prisoner has escaped, could it be his friends who hijacked the prison cart?” asked an Imperial Guard.
A ya-yi replied, “Impossible, that prisoner is an old hand; he doesn’t have any powerful friends.”
As they were speaking, the prisoner who had been released by the assassin willingly returned. From his account, the Imperial Guards learned that there were four assassins and they seemed to have captured another person. They had disguised themselves as ya-yi specifically to quietly shift that person right under the Imperial Guards’ watchful eyes.
The prisoner couldn’t make out what the hostage looked like, but the Imperial Guard boldly guessed that the hostage was Xiao Liulang.
The assassin was killed, and Xiao Liulang had disappeared. Who took him and where did they go?
“We’ve been guarding the Official Road all this time, not seeing anyone get by… Could it be… they went back to the Capital City?” speculated an Imperial Guard.
The leader of the Imperial Guards said, “Did you check all incoming carriages thoroughly?”
A subordinate replied, “Two people’s carriages weren’t checked.”
The leader’s brow furrowed. “Whose?”
“Zhao Shangshu and Princess Xinyang’s carriages,” replied the subordinate.
On Vermilion Bird Avenue, the carriage stopped outside the Mansion, and Princess Xinyang and Yujin alighted from it.
Unsurprisingly, Long Yi had already returned with the prisoner… to be precise, the person inside the cage. After removing the poor-quality human skin mask and taking off the blood-stained prison clothes, he changed into clean attire.
The clothes were on the small side, with a hem that couldn’t close and sleeves and trouser legs that were much too short.
Long Yi still placed the person on Princess Xinyang’s bedchamber.
Xiao Liulang’s breathing was somewhat weak. He had passed out, either due to exhaustion or excessive blood loss.
Princess Xinyang walked over with a calm expression but stopped just as she was about to cross the threshold.
It was Yujin who quickly stepped into the room and glanced at the man before the bed.
She didn’t know who the prisoner Long Yi had brought back was, nor did she understand why Long Yi would do such a thing. After all, this was the Princess’s bedchamber, and if someone unworthy lay there, it could be terrible.
However, when she approached the bed and saw the pale, handsome face that met her gaze, she was stunned!
“Princess!”
Yujin walked out with a shocked expression, turned to Princess Xinyang, who at some point had turned her back looking at the endless night, and said, “The person inside… inside… he… he is… he looks like… he…”
Yujin was at a loss for words, stuttering for a long time. Then, steeling herself, she said, “He is the Hanlin official I told the Princess about before, the one who looks like the young marquis! No wonder Long Yi brought him back; Long Yi must have mistaken him for the young marquis. Princess! You must have a look inside! It’s not surprising that Long Yi was mistaken; they look so similar! I almost suspected it was the young marquis come back to life! And they are of similar age… if the young marquis were still alive… he would be about this age too…”
