Chapter 342 - Let’s Just Go to Bed

Chapter 342: Chapter 342 - Let’s Just Go to Bed

"Where are you going?" Devin asked, feeling helpless. This was all too much for him.

Matilda didn’t even spare him a glance as she quickly packed her things, as if everything in the house was burning her.

"I’m going to my father’s house. I’m not yours, and all you want is the child. I’ll send him or her to you as soon as they’re born," she said bitterly, grabbing her school materials.

She had everything she needed since she still had enough clothes at her father’s house.

"Your father is out of the country," Devin revealed, but Matilda remained unfazed and continued packing.

"But the maids are there. I’ll put school on hold until the child is born because I can’t handle the stress. I hope you’ll be happy," she looked at him with pain in her eyes before picking up the bag she had packed.

Devin quickly took the bag from her and pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly as she tried to wiggle out of his grasp.

"Can we please talk about this? Just give me a little time to think it through," he pleaded.

Matilda calmed down a bit. She didn’t want to leave him, but she was hurt by his refusal to claim her as his own.

"How long?" she asked. Devin thought about talking to someone, maybe Robin, so he suggested,

"Just an hour, or better yet, let’s go for counseling."

Matilda sighed with relief at the mention of counseling. "I’m willing to do anything."

Devin couldn’t understand her. One minute she wanted to leave him, and the next she was willing to do anything. But he decided to take advantage of her willingness.

"And you won’t terminate the pregnancy anymore?" he asked.

Matilda lowered her head and fidgeted with her fingers. "No, I’m sorry."

Devin smiled a little, loosening his grip on her since she wasn’t resisting anymore.

"What made you change your mind?"

Matilda pulled away and went to sit on the large bed. She explained truthfully,

"Your absence gave me time to think. I can’t live without you. I’d rather die than make that mistake."

Devin felt a surge of happiness, but he knew that Matilda’s mood could change at any moment, especially when she went to school. So he hid his excitement, sat beside her, and said,

"It’s because you’re away from your friends at school."

Matilda hung her head in shame, feeling the weight of her mistakes. It was as if a fog had lifted, and she finally saw the truth.

Turning towards him, she locked eyes with Devin and spoke with sincerity,

" The people I’ve been trying hard to emulate are nothing more than school acquaintances, and once we graduate, they would likely drift apart forever. But you, Devin, you are different. You are always with me, no matter where I go, right in my heart."

Devin wanted desperately to believe her, but the trust between them had been severely damaged.

"You had me, yet you still considered ending our child’s life. You didn’t even have the decency to tell me. What if you hadn’t left your phone behind? What if that nurse hadn’t sent you that text message? How would I have ever known?"

Matilda felt a wave of shame wash over her as she realized that was how he had discovered her secret. She knew deep down that she would have gone through with it if given the chance.

She didn’t know how to convince him otherwise, but she couldn’t deny the truth.

"I’m sorry. I was overwhelmed and made a terrible mistake. Please forgive me. I will do anything, Devin. I will give up anything to have what we had before," she pleaded, her voice filled with desperation.

But Devin couldn’t simply restore the trust she had shattered.

"It’s not that simple. You broke my heart. You tore it apart and made it feel worthless," he replied, bitterness lacing his words.

Tears welled up in Matilda’s eyes once again as she witnessed the pain and resentment in his gaze. She reached out and took his hand, making a solemn vow, her voice teary,

"Please, give me a chance to make things right. After this child is born, I will seek help. I will do whatever it takes to give you more children. I will be a devoted wife."

"I will cook for you, take care of you, do anything to prove my love. Just please, don’t leave me. I’m begging you, Devin. Don’t throw away what we had because of my foolishness."

Her words struck a chord deep within Devin’s heart, but he still harbored doubts that she would follow through on her promises once she returned to school.

"You know what? Let’s sleep on it. If you still stand by your words on Monday, then I will consider the possibility of marriage," he finally relented.

Matilda understood that convincing him would be difficult, so she accepted his offer. However, she still had something to ask of him.

"Then, please make love to me. I miss you," she said, embracing him tightly. But he gently pulled away, leaving her with a bitter smile and disappointment in her eyes.

Devin explained, "What if we harm the child? I overheard the doctor saying it was our only chance."

Matilda tensed, remembering the doctor’s words, and felt the need to explain herself.

"When my father locked me up, I lost my sanity. I couldn’t sleep unless I was drunk, so one of my loyal maids would sneak bottles of Martini into my room whenever he was away. That’s how I survived. I should have told you about it."

Devin was disappointed that she had kept such a significant secret from him, but he also understood that she was battling depression and couldn’t have predicted the consequences.

"Yes, you should have. We could have sought help because it affected your mental health too," he observed.

"But I stopped drinking the moment I heard from Sabrina because she gave me hope. Let’s see a specialist, a gynecologist or someone who can help. I want to know our chances," Matilda suggested.

Devin nodded in agreement. They needed to start the medical process anew to understand what they should and shouldn’t do.

"We’ll get through this together, but promise me you won’t hide anything from me again," he requested solemnly. Matilda smiled and replied eagerly,

"I promise. What do you want to know? I’ll tell you everything."

Devin shook his head, feeling exhausted from all the arguments, and knew Matilda felt the same way.

"It’s okay. I miss you. Let’s just go to bed," he said, hugging her tightly. When they pulled away, their lips met.

At Kane’s Casino, Shandra anxiously waited for Robin, growing increasingly impatient.

Aria had called her a few days ago to confirm the appointment.

"Should we start the meeting?" her father asked irritably, annoyed by Robin’s tardiness. Shandra pleaded,

"Please, let’s give it a little more time."

The other men glanced at her, their annoyance evident as she deliberated whether or not to contact Robin. However, in the end, she decided to dial Aria’s personal number.

"Miss Kane, has Mr. Jewel arrived?" Aria inquired as soon as she picked up the call.

"No," Shandra replied nervously, but Aria remained calm and assured her, "I believe he will be on his way, but let me confirm."

Before Shandra could respond, one of the bodyguards interjected, "Mr. Jewel is here."

A smile spread across Shandra’s face as she informed Aria before ending the call, "It’s alright, one of the guards just announced his arrival."

Shandra’s excitement quickly faded when she noticed that Robin was not alone, accompanied by Sabrina and two bodyguards.
