Chapter 311: Chapter 311 – You can achieve anything if you put your mind to it
"You can tell me anything. What’s the matter?" Sabrina asked, her voice filled with concern. Matilda rarely had problems like Sabrina.
The only issue Matilda had faced in her life was when Mara had framed her and ruined her reputation. However, after clearing her name, everything had been peaceful and calm.
Matilda glanced around, making sure they were at a safe distance from the men, before leaning in and whispering in Sabrina’s ear,
"Sabrina, I’m pregnant."
Sabrina’s heart skipped a beat as joy flooded through her. She couldn’t understand why Matilda was trying to keep it a secret.
"That’s wonderful news!" Sabrina exclaimed, her voice rising. Matilda quickly hushed her,
"Shhh, I’m not ready for this," Matilda said sadly, her voice barely a whisper, tears gather in her eyes.
Sabrina was confused because Matilda was in a stable relationship. Was Devin not treating her well enough? Sabrina doubted it.
"But you’re engaged," she reminded Matilda.
The latter shook her head and said,
"I still have school. I have one and a half years left to complete my degree before I can start the master’s program. I also have plans to open my own restaurant and hotel in the future.’
"How can I possibly do all of that with a child on the way?" Matilda asked helplessly.
She had no idea how to balance work, school, and family life.
She had already made it clear to Devin that her career came first and she wasn’t ready for marriage or children.
However, she also knew that he wouldn’t allow her to terminate the pregnancy as she had planned, which is why she hadn’t told him.
She didn’t understand how it had happened since she was on birth control pills, but it had happened nonetheless, and she needed to find a solution before it was too late.
"It’s all about planning. You can achieve anything if you set your mind to it," Sabrina advised seriously, trying to distract Matilda from whatever she had planned or was planning to do.
Sadly, Matilda was not prepared and had already made up her mind.
"No. I can only handle one thing at a time, and I’m not ready to have a child."
Sabrina, taken aback by the determination in Matilda’s voice, was confused and wondered what Matilda intended to do with the child growing inside her womb.
"Wait, what do you plan to do?" she asked, her tone serious. Matilda confided in her, saying,
"I’m going to terminate the pregnancy, but I’m only telling you so you can help me keep it a secret."
Sabrina froze, shock settling in her eyes. It was as if she was seeing Matilda in a completely different light for the first time in her life.
Sabrina didn’t consider herself an angel, but she also didn’t think of herself as a demon.
She believed that while children could be unplanned, their lives shouldn’t be ended when there are people who would love and care for them.
"No, I can’t do that. Ending the life of an innocent, healthy child just because of your career? Are you out of your mind?"
Sabrina couldn’t believe what she was hearing, desperately hoping that this was all just a terrible nightmare from which she could wake up.
"Sabrina, I’m getting a hang of things and I’m at the top of my class. With this pregnancy, I will fall behind," Matilda complained.
"If I give birth, I would have to take a break from school. You know that Devin is also very busy," she continued, hinting that Devin would be too occupied to help her take care of the child.
However, Sabrina did not see it that way and interjected,
"It doesn’t mean that he would not make time for you and the child when you both need him."
Matilda did not want to imagine it. She saw herself managing her hotel and restaurants in the next five to six years before becoming pregnant.
"No. I don’t even want to get married until I have a satisfying career. Devin has his. Lizzy has hers, and you have yours. Why do I have to be the one to put mine on hold?" she asked, growing upset that Sabrina was not supporting her as she had expected.
"You don’t have to put your dream on hold. When you give birth to the child, I will come for him or her and take care of them with my twins. I know how to balance it," Sabrina assured Matilda, embracing her.
However, Matilda shook her head and pulled away, feeling offended.
"You’re making it seem like I’m lazy," Matilda complained, her offense evident. Sabrina attributed it to Matilda’s early pregnancy hormones and spoke softly, trying to provide a solution.
"I’m just trying to help, Tilda. You have no idea how it feels to get married without having a child of your own. Do you know how long I tried?" Sabrina asked, her voice hushed and tears welling in her eyes.
"Even when Robin abused me, I stayed because I still wanted to have a child to call my own. What if you get rid of it and never get the chance to have one when you’re ready?" Sabrina pleaded.
Before Matilda could respond, she said in a teary voice,
"Imagine being successful in business but struggling with childbirth. That business would never fill the void."
Matilda considered Sabrina’s point, but she quickly thought of a solution and responded,
"There is another option, which is adoption."
Sabrina felt a sense of defeat, but she was determined not to give up on her best friend.
"You can have everything you want," she reassured. "If you want to get married, a wedding planner can handle all the details and take away the stress. You can choose not to go on a honeymoon, or even use it as a way to relax and relieve stress."
Realizing that Matilda was still firm in her decision, Sabrina continued, "You can still have a child and pursue your education. Many women have done it before."
"I’m pregnant myself and still working. It can be challenging at times, but we women are capable of multitasking. We have been given the strength to handle it all."
Matilda felt a pang of regret and was also worried that Sabrina would inform Devin about her situation. Tearfully, she confessed,
"Maybe I’m not as strong as you, but I can’t go through with this, and I don’t want Devin to find out."
She wiped away her tears and walked away, leaving Sabrina rooted to the spot. Just then, Robinn approached and wrapped his arms around her, asking,
"My queen, are you okay?"
