Chapter 97: 096: Since you wish for death, I shall grant it to you.
A knock came through the receiver, and Shi Weiqing asked a few more questions to confirm that she was currently safe. Only then did the suffocating feeling in his chest ease slightly.
Afraid that hanging up might make it impossible to reach her again, Shi Weiqing could only slam on the gas pedal, rushing to the police station to find Xu Linchuan and ask him to trace the location.
But for some reason, the traffic tonight was exceptionally heavy; every two or three blocks, he’d get stuck for several minutes, unable to move forward.
Shi Weiqing stared intently at the traffic lights ahead, his tightly furrowed brows nearly capable of crushing a fly. His grip on the steering wheel tightened considerably.
As time ticked by minute after minute, Shi Weiqing’s patience wore thin. He squeezed into the gap between two cars, forcing his way through to carve out his own path.
Seeing that only two more overpasses stood between him and the police station, he found the intersection in front of him blocked once again.
Shi Weiqing had lost all patience. Just as he was about to abandon the car and use another method to get through, his gaze inadvertently landed on a familiar silhouette to his right.
He quickly turned on the signal light and drove his car directly in front of that person.
Shi Yin’s heart was filled with surprise upon seeing the dented front end of the Bentley. But what happened the next second erased his surprise completely, leaving only shock.
His phone was snatched, and he was taken right along with it.
Driving the car, Shi Yin silently glanced at the anxious man in the passenger seat through the corner of his eye.
He listened quietly as the man spoke to the unresponsive phone in an extraordinarily gentle tone.
"Zhizhi, are you okay?"
"Don’t be afraid, I’m on my way."
"Wait for me. You must wait for me." Shi Weiqing’s voice sounded as if a stone was lodged in his throat; each word caused his heart to ache unbearably.
A notification suddenly chimed on the phone. When Shi Weiqing saw the battery had dropped to just five percent, he frantically turned aside to rummage through the storage compartment for a charger.
After successfully charging the phone, he continued to reassure the person named Zhizhi on the other end, prompting Shi Yin to let out a quiet sigh.
He couldn’t recall how long it had been since he had last seen Shi Weiqing exhibit joy, anger, sorrow, or any semblance of genuine emotion. In a moment of dazed reminiscence, he almost felt as if they had returned to their childhood.
"How much longer?" A gravelly voice abruptly pulled Shi Yin back from his wandering thoughts.
Shi Yin glanced at the location shared by Xu Linchuan on his phone. "About fifteen minutes."
The place was quite far from the city. Even though he was driving as fast as possible, he couldn’t shorten the time any further.
Shi Weiqing acknowledged with a soft response. He loosened his tie around his neck and leaned back in his seat, attempting to relax the tension that had gripped his spine for so long.
Outside the car window, the shadowy silhouettes of trees slid past, and the warm yellow light of the streetlamps reflected on the man’s sharp features. But even this glow couldn’t melt the frost buried deep in his eyes.
Shi Yin cast him a concerned glance, his lips twitching as though ready to say something. Yet, he ultimately kept his worries to himself, shifting his full attention to the road ahead.
**
In the basement, the blinding white light suddenly switched on, causing the girl pretending to sleep on the cement floor to furrow her brows slightly.
Yang Bin entered with a bundle of ropes and a few bottles of beer in hand. He tied her hands and feet securely before sitting down on the chair beside her and popping open a bottle.
"You can’t entirely blame me for this." Yang Bin propped his feet on the surgical table in front of him, downing a large gulp of beer. "You brought this on yourself."
Had she not interfered, the police wouldn’t have suspected him.
No one knew how powerless he had felt—the indignity of being scrutinized under relentless interrogations, his pride trampled mercilessly, leaving him helpless to resist.
"And so?" Yu Zhi didn’t bother pretending anymore. She opened her eyes, looking directly at him without a trace of fear on her face. "Are you planning to kill me?"
Her sudden awakening caught Yang Bin off guard, but at this point, he felt no reason to hold back.
"Ha, don’t you think you deserve to die?" Yang Bin sneered, looking at the ropes binding her hands and feet.
Finally, she resembled her past self—like prey ready to be slaughtered.
Yu Zhi swept her eyes over the dissection knives on the surgical table, raising an eyebrow slightly. "Why do I deserve to die?"
"You don’t know what you’ve done?" Her words inexplicably ignited Yang Bin’s wrath, and he smashed the beer bottle onto the floor.
Shards of glass scattered everywhere, and the foamy beer seeped into the concrete, eventually forming a faint stain.
For a moment, the room fell deathly silent. Yang Bin opened another bottle, his demeanor gradually calming. "Do you have any last words? Out of respect for us once being neighbors, I’ll try to fulfill them."
He was committing atrocities while spouting magnanimous words, resembling a textbook case of schizophrenic behavior.
"Were all those previous victims killed by you?" Yu Zhi leaned against the wall, looking at him placidly.
Upon hearing this, Yang Bin’s hand holding the beer bottle froze. He bowed his head, his long shoulder-length hair veiling the emotions on his face. "That’s none of your business."
"So, you’re admitting it?"
"Shut up!"
Yang Bin flew into another rage. He grabbed Yu Zhi by her hood and lifted her up violently, his face twisting into a feral snarl. "I told you, it’s none of your business!"
"Touchy, aren’t we?" Yu Zhi chuckled mockingly, her eyes filled with blatant contempt.
"You want to die? Then I’ll grant your wish." Her expression pierced Yang Bin’s fragile ego, and he turned to grab a dissection knife from the surgical table.
He charged at her, the knife aimed directly at her heart.
’Bang——’
A crashing sound came from Shi Weiqing’s phone, causing his pupils to constrict. He sprinted toward the destination marked on the map.
In his frantic urgency and overwhelming fear, he tripped on loose gravel multiple times.
"Don’t worry; she’ll surely be alright," Shi Yin steadied him with a hand on his arm, though his own expression wasn’t much better.
He had overheard the earlier conversations loud and clear. While he suspected the girl had little chance of survival, in moments like this, all he could do was continue reassuring Shi Weiqing.
"I know." Shi Weiqing’s voice was completely hoarse, but his gaze remained resolute.
Seeing the entrance to the basement, his steps grew both faster and heavier.
He kicked the door open, and upon seeing the young girl unharmed and standing by the wall, he rushed forward and embraced her tightly.
"Zhizhi..." Shi Weiqing buried his face in her neck, hiding the redness in his eyes.
Even though his hands were trembling, he showed no sign of letting go, as if cradling a treasure he had fought desperately to protect.
His demeanor made Yu Zhi feel immense guilt. She tilted her head and took the initiative to plant a kiss on his cheek. "I’m not hurt."
