Chapter 137: 136: Someone has requested to trade with you.
Yu Zhi shook her head, rubbed the aching spot a few times until the pain subsided a bit, and then let go of her hand. She tilted her head up to look at the boy and said, somewhat frustrated, "Sorry."
She had been too absorbed in her thoughts just now, completely oblivious to the commotion in the stairwell, and didn’t react quickly enough to avoid the collision.
"Are you... in pain?" Lu Li withdrew his hand from midair, clutching his book tighter against his chest.
Noticing the fair skin on the girl’s forehead gradually beginning to redden, he furrowed his brows deeply, his eyes brimming with worry and distress.
"It’s fine." Yu Zhi, feeling slightly awkward at the raw emotions in his gaze, shifted her eyes away.
She glanced downstairs, an urge to avoid the situation taking root: "I’m heading off now."
Before the boy could respond, she swiftly moved around him, leaving him standing there, unmoving for a long moment.
Yu Zhi jogged all the way to the entrance of Class 7. Before she had a chance to return to her seat, the watch on her wrist vibrated twice.
Without showing any reaction, she scanned the classroom with a subtle glance, then turned and headed to the far end of the hallway—to the girls’ restroom.
Inside, she shut the door of the last stall, gripping the handle tightly to stop anyone from barging in, and aligned her pupils with the watch display.
A notification bubble from Yellow Star popped up. The message was from Rattlesnake, brief and to the point: apart from asking her to return a call whenever she had time, it said nothing else.
Yu Zhi arched her brow slightly, dug into her pocket for her earbuds, put them on, and activated a voice changer as she answered the call, her voice lowered: "What do you want?"
A faint buzzing sound came through the earbuds—soft but sharp enough that the girl frowned slightly.
It was only after a two-second pause that Rattlesnake spoke, his casual tone unhurried: "The buyer I spoke to you about earlier raised the offer to fifty million. Interested this time?"
"No way." Her reply was the same as before, without even a trace of hesitation.
This time, though, she added another question, "Did you investigate the buyer?"
"Nope. But I did hear she’s quite a young woman," Rattlesnake said lazily, even with his voice distorted by mechanical modulation.
He yawned: "You really won’t reconsider? She specifically named you as the person she wants. If you play along, you could squeeze extra cash out of her too. Wouldn’t that be sweet?"
Yu Zhi wasn’t moved by his suggestion. Leaning comfortably against the white wall, she fixed her eyes on the ceiling. "What does she want it for?"
If she recalled correctly, the buyer had tried to reach out to her through an intermediary about three months ago.
Since then, it seemed like the buyer had pulled some strings and enlisted Rattlesnake to persuade her again.
The persistence was intriguing—it actually piqued her curiosity.
"That, I have no clue," Rattlesnake paused for two seconds, as if something had just crossed his mind, "But, the woman has also been in touch with Fifth Granny lately."
Just hearing the mention of Fifth Granny instantly brought a flicker of distaste to Yu Zhi’s eyes.
If the buyer had only approached her, she might not have thought much of it.
But getting involved with Fifth Granny? That meant whatever business was going on couldn’t possibly be clean.
"Are you sure you’re set on this?" Not hearing a response, Rattlesnake patiently probed again.
In his eyes, morality didn’t mean much—he was willing to accept anything as long as it brought him benefits.
What’s more, once a deal was made, whatever happened after was none of his concern.
"Yep." Yu Zhi responded briefly, her smile tinged with irony and playfulness. "If you’re short on cash, why not go and raid Fifth Granny’s lair instead?"
"No, no, no—that old hag gives me the creeps."
Perhaps stirred by the suggestion, Rattlesnake’s agitation was obvious; the girl could clearly hear the sound of a chair toppling over through her earbuds.
She clicked her tongue in disdain. "That’s all you’re good for?"
"Exactly. If I had to choose between starving to death and raiding her lair, I’d rather starve!"
That old hag was the kind of person who could take someone’s life without batting an eye. So what if he was poor? At least he was alive, wasn’t he?
Yu Zhi: "..."
It was probably a good thing Rattlesnake wasn’t standing in front of her right now—otherwise, she’d be giving him a thorough mocking.
"Alright, I’ve got things to do." Yu Zhi disconnected the call right as the class bell rang.
She was terrified he’d realize she was just a student; otherwise, odds were she’d be the one being mocked next.
**
The last class of the afternoon happened to be PE. The students of Class 7 slung their backpacks over their shoulders and made their way to the track field, ready to head straight home when the time came.
Yu Zhi finished the last sip of ginger tea, slipped her thermos into her backpack, and carelessly tossed it onto the steps.
She walked alongside Qin Huai toward the waiting PE teacher, who was wearing his usual neon-green attire, albeit in a slightly different style.
No one really knew how much he loved that shade of green.
"Little Zhi, why don’t you ask the teacher for leave?" Qin Huai leaned closer to her ear, whispering softly.
"Why?"
"It’s that time of the month for you—you shouldn’t be exercising."
A flicker of surprise crossed Yu Zhi’s eyes. It wasn’t something she’d given much thought to before. On days like these, she usually just stayed at home and rested, never really venturing out.
She pressed her lips together and was about to respond—
"You two over there, what are you whispering about?" The PE teacher’s voice roared with authority.
He frowned and gestured to an empty spot beside him. "Come on, step up."
Yu Zhi cast him a brief, disinterested glance and strolled over casually, her hands buried deep in the pockets of her jacket, with no intention of taking them out.
Qin Huai followed closely behind, but her upright posture made her seem almost military-like, in stark contrast to the relaxed demeanor of the girl at her side.
"You, what’s your name?" The teacher scrutinized Yu Zhi from head to toe, his tone carrying a hint of anger.
"Yu Zhi."
"Just transferred here?"
"Mm." The girl answered without much emotion, her indifferent attitude coming across as challenging and further irritating the teacher.
He shifted his gaze toward the expansive track field, his tone growing cold: "Run three laps around the track. Come back after you’ve finished."
"Teacher! Classmate Yu isn’t feeling well—she can’t run!" Qin Huai panicked, anxiously grabbing Yu Zhi’s wrist with a worried expression.
"Can’t run?"
"Yes, she’s not in a condition for strenuous activity right now."
The PE teacher nodded briefly. Just as Qin Huai thought he’d relent, he added, "Then make it four laps."
He’d seen this trick too often—whenever it came time to exercise, excuses began pouring in. What kind of "can’t run" nonsense was that?
"You!"
Yu Zhi reached out and restrained Qin Huai, who was about to argue, gently patting her hand to reassure her. "It’s okay. I can do it."
"Little Zhi, don’t go..." Qin Huai called out to the girl who had already started jogging away, her voice trembling, her lips pursed, and her eyes brimming with the desperate urge to cry.
