Chapter 100: 099: Arrange engagement, break both legs

She had never considered such questions before, and she didn’t like to dwell on things that hadn’t yet happened.

Only when the day truly arrived would she likely give an answer.

The two young girls discussed the topic for over ten minutes, stopping only after the bell rang and the teacher entered the classroom.

As the sun set in the west, Yu Zhi walked out of the school at an unhurried pace, bathed in the fading glow of dusk.

To avoid worrying Shi Wei, she called him first to inform him of her whereabouts before getting into the BMW idling by the roadside.

It must be noted—this was the first time Yu Zhi had ever been "fortunate" enough to take a ride in a Yu Family car after school.

Leaning against the back seat, her expression indifferent, she gazed out the window without uttering a single word to the two people in the front. It was as if they were mere air to her.

Through the rearview mirror, Yu Xinman glanced at her, her eyes deep and dark as an abyss, laced with malice and a hint of sarcasm.

In the Yu Family’s grand hall, Yu Baisheng, who had been waiting for some time, finally softened his otherwise impatient expression upon hearing the approaching footsteps.

"Little Zhi, come over and sit down." He gestured toward the seat beside him.

Though it had only been a few days, Yu Baisheng now had significantly more gray hairs, his once bright and spirited eyes now dull and lifeless. He seemed to have aged substantially.

Yu Zhi gave him a cold glance before sitting down on the other end of the sofa. "What’s the matter?"

Even though she had been brought back into the Yu Family for some time now, her attitude remained the same as it had been the first day—detached and cold, keeping others at arm’s length.

Suppressing his inner dissatisfaction, Yu Baisheng forced a stiff smile. "You’ve been gone for so long. Is there something your father did wrong?"

At his words, Yu Zhi turned her head to look directly at him. Her gaze was so piercing, it seemed to see right through him. "What are you really trying to say?"

Meeting her clear and penetrating eyes, Yu Baisheng froze briefly.

After a moment of contemplation, he lifted his teacup, taking a small sip to mask his intentions. Speaking as though casually, he said, "A few days ago, I met the son of an old classmate. He’s about your age, with a decent temperament and family background."

Yu Zhi raised her brows. "And?"

"I discussed it with my old classmate. After your nineteenth birthday, we’ll arrange for you two to be engaged," Yu Baisheng said, his tone leaving no room for negotiation.

Initially, he had intended to wait until Yu Zhi graduated from high school before bringing up this marriage.

But with Yuan Li still locked away, the company’s stock plummeting, and numerous partners preparing to withdraw their investments, if things continued to spiral, the Yu Family might completely collapse under him.

"Engagement?" Yu Zhi nearly laughed aloud. She leaned back against the sofa, casually crossing her legs, her gaze sharp and icy in an instant. "What gives you the right?"

"Sister, watch your tone," Yu Xinman frowned in disapproval. "Dad is doing this for your sake. There are plenty of people who can’t even dream of marrying into the Chen Family!"

"Why don’t you go, then?"

"I—"

"Enough!" Yu Baisheng cut them off, slamming his teacup heavily onto the table.

He took a deep breath. "Little Zhi, this has already been decided. Prepare yourself."

"And if I don’t?" Yu Zhi asked with a faint smile, her gaze so dark it was terrifying.

Her demeanor was like the calm before a storm—serene on the surface but brimming with hidden waves.

For a moment, Yu Baisheng was inexplicably intimidated by her cold stare.

But then he reminded himself—she was just a wild girl raised in backwater poverty. What kind of trouble could she possibly stir up?

Disregarding his momentary hesitation, Yu Baisheng doubled down, his tone hardening. "You don’t have a choice."

Seeing his resoluteness, Yu Zhi let out a faint, mocking laugh. Unhurriedly, she picked up her backpack and stood, casting him an inscrutable glance. "Fine, I’ll ’prepare.’"

Yu Baisheng responded, completely missing the pointed way she emphasized the word. After all, in his view, whether or not she agreed wouldn’t change anything.

"Sister, wait!"

Yu Zhi had just stepped out the main doors when an irritatingly shrill voice called out behind her.

She didn’t stop walking, letting the other person jog to catch up to her pace.

"Yu Zhi, are you deaf?" Yu Xinman reached out, blocking her path.

Perhaps from lack of exercise, or perhaps from her overly pampered lifestyle, even the slight run left her gasping for air.

Yu Zhi slapped her hand away. "Get lost."

"Don’t you even want to know who you’re being forced to marry?" Yu Xinman ignored the faint throbbing pain in her arm and stepped in her way again.

Without waiting for a response, she couldn’t help but blurt out, "That young master from the Chen Family—he’s a cripple in a wheelchair, and he’ll never be able to have children."

She stared unblinkingly, watching for any flicker of emotion.

Unfortunately for her, Yu Zhi’s face remained as impassive as ever, as though it was someone else’s life being talked about and not her own.

"Yu Zhi, you’re going to marry a cripple," Yu Xinman said again, her tone laced with frustration.

"Are you done?" Yu Zhi shoved her aside. Though her force wasn’t overwhelming, it was enough to send the other girl tumbling to the ground.

Standing tall, Yu Zhi looked down at Yu Xinman with icy disdain, her gaze murderous. "Keep following me and you’d better watch your legs."

"You dare?" Yu Xinman glared back without fear, a mocking smirk tugging at her lips.

Slowly rising from the ground, she provocatively pushed Yu Zhi’s shoulder again, even poking insistently at her arm with her finger. "Yu Zhi, do you dare?"

She had been pushed to the brink in recent days, and even if she had to fall into hell, she was determined to drag Yu Zhi down with her.

Yu Zhi let out a low chuckle, gripping her wrist tightly and dragging her toward the nearby bushes.

With a swift kick to Yu Xinman’s stomach, Yu Zhi sent her collapsing. She scanned the area briefly before pulling a laptop from her backpack and slamming it down mercilessly on Yu Xinman’s knees.

"Ahhhhhh!!!"

The birds resting in the trees scattered in a flurry of wings, startled by the piercing scream.

Yu Xinman trembled violently on the ground, her face twisted in agony as her fingers dug desperately into the soil. Her once delicate hands were now caked in mud.

The unbearable pain left her body feeling shattered, her blood seeming to freeze in her veins.

Sweat dripped from her forehead, blurring her vision even as she began to lose consciousness.

Unmoved, Yu Zhi picked up the now-broken laptop, methodically wiping it down with tissues she retrieved from her bag.

From beginning to end, she didn’t spare so much as a glance at the unconscious Yu Xinman lying in the grass.
