Chapter 298: Chapter 298: Turning The Tides-1
Song Hancheng’s cheeks flamed red, and he looked as though he wanted the ground to swallow him whole.
"Boss, I... I apologize. I thought I was being supportive, but it seems I completely misread the situation."
Gu Jin waved a hand, her expression softening slightly.
"It’s fine. Just... maybe in the future, trust me a little more. If I needed help, I’d have told you directly."
Song Hancheng nodded, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Understood, Boss. I suppose I owe you an apology, and... well, maybe a thank-you for not firing me on the spot."
Gu Jin cracked a small smile. "I’ll think about it," she replied with a raised brow.
Suddenly Song Hancheng turned toward Su Qing and asked,
"Aren’t you surprised?"
"Why should I be?"
Song Hancheng baffled by Su Qing’s calmness asked,
"I mean...the elder brother who protected you all this while suddenly turned out to be a sister...you aren’t..."
"I am not because I knew all along. In fact, it has been more than a year since I knew that Su Jin was Gu Jin and Gu Jin was a woman." Su Qing smiled widely clearly enjoying her fiance’s plight.
Song Hancheng was heartbroken by his fiance’s words and wanted to punish her for hiding the truth all along.
He was even a little angry, that even though Su Qing knew the truth all along, she let him say all those words to Gu Jin.
If only she had intervened and told her the truth but what did she do? Remained quiet while laughing...
Truly his fiance...
"Alright. I am leaving. I am tired." Gu Jin yawned and turned to her room.
After sleeping for the entire day, Gu Jin woke up from hunger. She rubbed her eyes and walked down. Once she had her breakfast, she announced to Song Hancheng and Su Qing that she was leaving for the capital.
They agreed and promised to meet her after 2 weeks, once they dealt with the problem in the Fujio city’s alchemy shop.
Gu Jin left for the city and arrived at the city right on the day of the admission. She tried to call Jin Mu but couldn’t reach her.
Feeling defeated Gu Jin called her boyfriend, but even he didn’t pick up the call.
"Strange." Gu Jin instantly sensed something was wrong, but she was running out of time and instantly took a cab to Beijing University of Magic.
Compared to what she had imagined, Beijing University was just like modern universities except it looked much more gorgeous.
Gu Jin made her way toward the grand gate, but just as she was about to step inside, two young women blocked her path.
Both wore the university’s badge on their robes and looked at her with a hostile glare. Gu Jin raised an eyebrow, taking in their sneering expressions.
"Move aside," she said, her tone calm but with a hint of warning.
One of the women, a tall brunette with sharp eyes, stepped forward and sneered,
"You’re not welcome here. How dare you show your face on this campus after what you did to our Goddess Gu?"
The other woman, a shorter girl with curly hair, nodded in fierce agreement.
"That’s right! You’re banned from entering! After you harmed our Goddess, you have no right to step foot here."
Gu Jin let out a soft sigh, clearly uninterested in the confrontation.
She made a move to bypass them, but they shifted in unison, blocking her once again.
"Good dogs don’t get in the way of people," she replied coolly. "So be obedient and make way."
Her words made the two women bristle with anger, their faces turning red.
The tall one clenched her fists, her voice rising as she practically shouted,
"How dare you! You’ll pay for insulting our goddess!"
The commotion quickly attracted a crowd, with students gathering around and murmuring.
Whispers rippled through the crowd as the two women continued to glare at Gu Jin, determined to block her entrance.
A few students shot Gu Jin curious, almost disdainful looks as they took in her modest attire, her clothes markedly simpler than the high-fashion robes many of the other students wore.
"Look at her," someone in the crowd snickered, loud enough for everyone to hear.
"Did she come here for an admission interview wearing those old rags?"
Another voice chimed in with a mocking tone.
"She looks like she’s from the countryside. Can she even afford the fees here?"
"Forget about fees," someone else sneered.
"If she dared to harm Goddess Gu, there’s no way the principal will ever allow her admission. She’s probably here to beg for mercy."
A tall boy with golden hair scoffed loudly.
"And let’s be real," he drawled, his tone thick with disdain.
"Do you even have advanced-level ranking and indigo mana? That’s a minimum requirement here. I doubt a country bumpkin like you has any chance."
Gu Jin ignored the taunts.
She turned her attention back to the two women blocking her way. "I’ll ask once," she said with icy precision.
"How exactly did I harm your so-called ’Goddess’ Gu?"
The shorter woman looked taken aback for a moment, clearly not expecting such a direct question.
But she quickly recovered and exchanged a furtive glance with her companion.
"W-What? You think we owe you an explanation?" the tall one snapped.
"Everyone knows you tried to interfere with the portal when our Goddess Gu opened it."
The crowd gasped, murmuring in low voices as their eyes filled with suspicion. Someone in the crowd hissed,
"She interfered with the portal? Doesn’t she know how dangerous that is? She could have put Goddess Gu’s life at risk!"
"What portal?"
"Ah...just one month ago, a professor of Beijing University led a batch of students to open the portal to the Ancient Magic World. Gu Aihan was the one responsible to open a portal to that place."
"Unforgivable!" another shouted, his voice seething with anger.
Gu Jin glanced around at the hostile faces, and her lips curled up into a small, amused smile.
She folded her arms, looking utterly unbothered by the accusations swirling around her.
"Oh?" she said softly, her tone mocking.
"So you’re saying I interfered with the portal when Goddess Gu attempted to open it?" She looked at the two women, who were starting to squirm under her cold gaze.
"Funny, considering I’m not even from the capital. How could I possibly have been there?"
Her words seemed to stun the crowd, and the whispers intensified as doubt started to seep into some of their faces.
A few of the students exchanged curious glances, reassessing the situation.
But the two women in front of her remained resolute, refusing to be swayed.
"Stop lying!" the shorter girl snapped, though there was a tremor in her voice now.
"Everyone knows what you did. Don’t try to weasel your way out of this!"
The tall brunette with sharp eyes said.
"All of this happened in Mistwood. You were there at that moment."
"Oh, I was there, was I?" Gu Jin asked, voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Tell me, since you two seem so sure of yourselves, what exactly did I do to ’interfere’ with this portal? And who even saw me?"
The two women exchanged another uneasy glance. It was clear they hadn’t expected her to push back so confidently.
"Y-You were seen near the portal just before it destabilized! And you were the only one who had entered the Ancient Magic World."
"So? Does that show I was the one who was wrong? Nope. It shows that your Goddess Gu was wrong. Maybe she was the one who didn’t open the portal properly.
Maybe that was the reason why, I ended up in the portal while others couldn’t even enter it."
The shorter woman’s face flushed, and she spluttered,
"Y-You can’t possibly be accusing Goddess Gu! She... she’s perfect. She’d never make a mistake with something as crucial as opening the portal."
The tall brunette looked visibly shaken, but she tried to salvage her pride.
"Yes! Goddess Gu has trained under the finest professors. She wouldn’t miscalculate like... like some amateur." Her voice, however, lacked the conviction it had before.
Gu Jin rolled her eyes, her lips twisting into a smirk.
"Tell me, did anyone actually see me tampering with this portal? Or is it all just speculation you decided to take as fact?"
She crossed her arms, waiting, enjoying the way the two women squirmed under her unyielding gaze.
A few students in the crowd began whispering to each other, their gazes drifting between Gu Jin and the two women, their expressions growing skeptical.
"It’s true," someone murmured, "I mean... how can they be so certain it was her?"
"Yes," added another, "and she’s right. No one else could enter the portal that day. Maybe it wasn’t her fault at all."
Seeing the shift in the crowd, the shorter woman attempted one last desperate retort.
"It... it doesn’t matter! You were there, and that’s suspicious enough."
