The Mighty Mage
Chapter 284: Depressed

Chapter 284: Chapter 284: Depressed

They scolded me for being irresponsible and improper, for blaming my failure on a ’childish prank.’ Even our parents sided with her.

They told me I was the one at fault for not managing my time better. I was devastated."

Jichun paused, shaking her head as if she still couldn’t quite believe how quickly things had spiraled.

"And that wasn’t the only time. There was another incident—our parents had bought an expensive magical artifact, a rare treasure.

Gu Aihan, curious as she always pretended to be, wanted to play with it. I told her no, that it was dangerous. But when I left the room, she took it and ended up breaking it."

Gu Jin’s eyes widened in surprise as Jichun clenched her fists.

"When our parents found out, Gu Aihan wept, saying that she had only wanted to look at it but accidentally broke it because I wasn’t watching her carefully enough.

Again, the blame fell on me. I was punished for being ’negligent,’ while Aihan was comforted like the innocent victim she made herself out to be."

Gu Jin felt her chest tighten with anger on Jichun’s behalf, but she said nothing, allowing her to continue.

"Then there was the time she lied about being sick, claiming she was too weak to attend a family gathering that was important for our reputation.

I stayed behind to care for her while our parents went. I was so worried, trying everything I could to make her feel better.

But as soon as they left, she was perfectly fine, sneaking out to meet her friends.

When our parents returned and found out I had let her go, they accused me of being irresponsible again, while Gu Aihan cried, saying she had ’begged me to stay’ but I ’forced’ her to go out."

Gu Jichun wiped away the tears at her corner and continued,

"Then there was the final straw. We had a guest at the house, an important noble family who could’ve helped me repair my reputation.

Gu Aihan played a prank on one of their children, making him trip and fall, causing a huge scene.

And guess who was blamed for it? Me. They said I should’ve known better than to allow her to be reckless in such company."

Gu Jin stared at Jichun, her anger growing with each incident.

Each story made it clearer that Gu Aihan had systematically ruined her sister’s life, little by little, with her manipulative behavior.

Jichun’s voice cracked as she continued.

However, what Gu Jin couldn’t understand was why did Gu Aihan destroyed her own sister’s reputation.

"Every time I tried to stand up for myself, it only made things worse. People started calling me unreasonable, and jealous of my younger sister’s charm and innocence.

They said I was the scheming one, trying to tarnish her reputation. I couldn’t believe how easily they were fooled.

But the more I protested, the harsher the judgment became. My reputation was ruined, Gu Jin. Completely destroyed."

Jichun looked down, her hands trembling slightly.

"I stopped fighting back after that. What was the point? No one would believe me. Everyone saw Gu Aihan as the sweet, perfect girl and me as the bitter, evil older sister."

"I had no idea," Gu Jin finally said, her voice low.

"No idea that Gu Aihan had done so much. She plays the part so well. I see now that she’s more dangerous than I thought."

Jichun met Gu Jin’s gaze, her eyes filled with an exhausted sadness.

"That’s why I didn’t want you to associate with me. I didn’t want you to be dragged into this mess.

I’ve already lost everything. I couldn’t bear to see someone else get caught up in the destruction Gu Aihan leaves behind."

Gu Jichun didn’t tell Gu Jin the complete truth.

It wasn’t that her parents were completely blind, they were just overprotective of Gu Aihan.

Whenever anyone in the house blamed Gu Aihan, she would threaten to leave the capital and never return.

Because of this Gu Jichun was the one who had to take the fall every time. Every single time.

What broke her even more was...her boyfriend who initially didn’t like Gu Aihan, cheated on her with Gu Aihan.

Even after knowing that, her parents only blamed Gu Aihan a little and asked her to compromise.

In the end, she couldn’t take it anymore and left. She thought her parents would at least be a bit remorseful and feel guilty.

To hear their guilt she specifically installed hearing magic equipment in their room and the living room.

Result? They were indeed sad and even blamed Gu Aihan to some extent, but as Gu Aihan’as one threat was enough to make them shut their mouth.

But what truly made her angry was their reaction later on to a rumor circulated by Gu Aihan.

Just like every time, Gu Aihan sobbed in front of her friends and circulated the rumor that she(Gu Jichun) first blackmailed a young man into becoming her(Gu Jichun’s) boyfriend and when she had enough, Gu Jichun framed her(Gu Aihan) and her(Gu Jichun’s) boyfriend for a easy breakup.

That lie spread like wildfire in the capital, twisting the story even further, making her the villain who used manipulation and schemes to destroy her own family for personal gain.

Her parents only scolded Gu Aihan once and let her go. They didn’t even dare to resolve the rumor.

After all, Gu Aihan had sworn that she would commit suicide if they dared to clear up the rumor.

Her parents didn’t even contact her.

Gu Jichun was so depressed that she left the capital and started to wander around the world. She spent the time all alone and never interacted with strangers.

She hardly ever talked with any human again after that incident.

Why?

Because she was fearful. Fearful that once again she would have to face the scorn.

Slowly she closed her heart.

When even after 2 years no one bothered to contact her, Gu Jichun wanted to give up on her life.

Who would even care, even if she died?

Yet she held on.

She was worried that there would be no one to perform the burial process for her.

Maybe when she was saving Gu Jin she indeed hoped that out of courtesy, Gu Jin would do the burial process for her.

However, the more she interacted with Gu Jin, the more lovable she felt Gu Jin was.

It was to the point that she even started to think of delaying her suicide plan.

Before leaving the world she wanted to make some happy memories and hence when Gu Jin proposed to give her a skeleton warrior, she was excited by the idea.

She could interact with Gu Jin for a few more days, and once Gu Jin left her, she could spend some beautiful time with the skeleton warrior before asking it to perform the burial process.

It was such a beautiful thought that Gu Jichun felt happiness for the first time in the past year.

Who would have thought that before she could even start her plan, Gu Jin would tell her that she hated Gu Aihan, just like her?

Ah...maybe the god finally had pity on her.

Gu Jichun’s beautiful smile hid the dark thoughts brewing in her mind.

If there were some other person they would have been misled by Gu Jichun’s beautiful smile, but Gu Jin was different.

Other than being a medicine practitioner, she was an alert person.

By common logic, no person should be smiling so beautifully if they had gone through so many depressing things, yet Gu Jichun looked normal.

This could only mean two things, first Gu Jichun had a great mental capacity, but Gu Jin didn’t feel so.

The second was...Gu Jichun had completely given up on living and hence she could smile so beautifully.

On top of it, even though Gu Jichun tried her very best to hide her depressing thoughts, she would unconsciously reveal them, just enough for Gu Jin to understand her state.

The mere thought of having such a beautiful person die, made Gu Jin fill with anger and sadness.

She can’t...she can’t let Gu Jichun die. Never!

Gu Jin suddenly held Gu Jichun’s hand and said softly,

"Are you thinking of committing suicide?"

Gu Jichun was stunned.

She never thought that a stranger could so easily guess her thoughts.

Yet she didn’t disagree. She selfishly hoped that Gu Jin would feel sympathy for her, love her(Gu Jichun) a bit more, and visit her grave every year.

Even if Gu Jin could visit her for two years after her death, she would be satisfied.

They say dead people love to see someone whom they liked or loved. She hoped to be loved by Gu Jin and hoped she would visit her(Gu Jichun).

"I haven’t introduced myself, right? My name is Gu Jin. I am an orphan."

"Gu Jin?" Gu Jichun’s eyes widened slightly.
