The Mighty Mage -
Chapter 260: Worse
Chapter 260: Chapter 260: Worse
The soldiers were at first too stunned by the sudden turn of events to process what they were witnessing.
Yet, as moments passed, some of the more observant soldiers began to notice something strange.
"Wait a second..." a soldier muttered under his breath, lowering his weapon slightly as he watched one of the cloaked figures cast an earth spell, sending jagged spikes of rock through a line of parasites.
The figure didn’t pause after the spell—it immediately moved to cast another, summoning a gust of wind that sliced through a nearby group of enemies.
"How are they still going? Shouldn’t they be running out of mana by now?"
Ren Fulin, standing nearby, narrowed his eyes.
He too had noticed the anomaly.
Even the most experienced mages couldn’t maintain such a continuous barrage of spells without showing signs of fatigue.
Yet, these cloaked figures—whoever they were—seemed tireless, casting spell after spell with the same intensity as when they had first appeared.
"Something’s not right," Fulin muttered to Feng Boyu, who was beside him, fending off a straggling parasite.
"I don’t know who they are, but they shouldn’t be able to cast that many spells without a break. Are they even human?"
Feng Boyu shook his head, equally puzzled.
"I don’t think so," he replied, watching as one of the cloaked figures sent a torrent of water crashing into a large parasite, drowning it in an instant.
"But they’re on our side for now. That’s all that matters."
Gu Jin stood a distance away, hidden from the soldiers’ view, her focus entirely on the battlefield.
Looking at the parasites which were still not reducing in number, Gu Jin sighed and asked the space to count the total number of the parasites in the area around them.
"Master...as far as I can detect it is more than 500,000."
No wonder even after the addition of the skeleton warrior the parasites panicked only a bit but didn’t retreat.
Gu Jin narrowed her eyes and suddenly said,
"Well looks like this battle will last longer than I have thought."
She said to Skelly 2 who had not participated in the war,
"Go and collect all the people you find within the range of 1 km. Try to pick those who are at advanced rank."
Skelly 2 nodded and immediately started to execute the task.
Gu Jin continued to suck out the life force of the parasites. It didn’t consume her mana at all and she could feel her mastery on necromancy increasing as the time passed.
Honestly, everything was good on her end.
But for some reason...Gu Jin was filled with anxiety.
Suddenly her left and right eyelids started to twitch together.
"No! Please! Please don’t activate my bad luck!" Gu Jin muttered.
"Master, how can you be so sure that something bad is about to happen?" The space asked.
"No...something bad and something good is about to happen. I don’t know what it is...but I feel as if I am not ready to face it." Gu Jin said.
"Master don’t worry everything will be alright." The space assured her.
Gu Jin remained silent.
Skelly 2 soon returned with more than 10 more bodies.
Just like the previous time, Gu Jin resurrected them and asked them to wear black cloaks and masks.
The soldiers who were fighting for a long time were tired.
Just when they were wondering what to do, a few more black-cloaked figures joined the battle.
"Hey! Boyu! Go and ask whether they can fight for some time while we can take a rest." Ren Fulin said hesitantly.
Feng Boyu hesitates for a while before agreeing,
"Okay."
He walks towards the black cloaked figures and ask,
"Excuse me...if you all don’t mind...we want to take rest...can you hold them for one hour? We will hurriedly recover our mana and continue to fight."
The black-cloaked figure nodded its head.
Feng Boyu was grateful.
Thank god the black-cloaked man was a reasonable person.
"Soldier retreat! We are going to take rest for the next 1 hour." Feng Boyu announced.
All the soldiers felt relieved and retreated. They were at their limit.
Their mana as well as their stamina had long ago run out.
However, due to their leader’s motivation, they continued.
Feng Boyu decided to camp a bit far away and built a tent 1 km away from the magic academy.
Gu Jin asked one of the black-cloaked figures to lift a box and ordered it to be delivered to the soldiers.
Just as Ren Fulin had closed his eyes to recover mana, a shadow loomed over him.
His instincts kicked in immediately, and his eyes snapped open, hand gripping the hilt of his sword.
But instead of an enemy, he found one of the black-cloaked figures standing before him, holding a small, intricately designed box.
The figure said nothing, merely placing the box at his feet before retreating back into the shadows.
He hesitated for a moment, then called out to Feng Boyu, who was resting nearby.
"Boyu! Come over here. I think they left us something."
Feng Boyu, looking equally wary, approached. He glanced at the box, then at the retreating figure, his brow furrowing in confusion.
"What do you think it is?" he asked, crouching down beside Fulin.
Fulin carefully lifted the lid of the box, half-expecting some kind of trap. But inside, to his surprise, were several pills.
Feng Boyu lifted one of the pills and smelled the light refreshing fragrance from the pill. His fatigued mind felt relaxed and his eyes widened in surprise,
"Earth Rank pills? How can someone be so generous?"
Ren Fulin inspected the pill and muttered,
"But one thing is for sure...these black-cloaked figures are definitely not sent by General Gu. How could the poor military afford to send earth-rank pills to their soldiers?"
Feng Boyu nodded.
He too felt Ren Fulin was right.
"However...it doesn’t matter. Their attitude is enough to tell us that they are on our side. From the smell of the pills, I can assure you that there are no poisonous ingredients in it."
Ren Fulin took a deep breath, still suspicious but realizing they had little choice.
The soldiers were utterly exhausted, and these Earth Rank pills could make a significant difference.
He nodded at Feng Boyu, deciding to trust his judgment for now.
"Alright," Fulin said, handing the pills out to the soldiers.
"Let’s not waste this opportunity. Everyone, take one pill and rest while we can."
The soldiers hesitated at first, exchanging glances, but the dire situation left them with few options.
One by one, they swallowed the pills, the refreshing fragrance of the pill filling them with energy as it dissolved in their mouths.
Immediately, a soothing warmth spread throughout their bodies, revitalizing them both physically and mentally.
"It’s incredible!" one soldier gasped, flexing his fingers as the lingering fatigue melted away. "I feel like I just woke up after a full night’s rest."
Feng Boyu felt the same, the pill’s effects surging through his system, sharpening his senses and restoring his strength.
"These black-cloaked figures," he muttered, glancing in their direction.
"Whoever they are, they’re no ordinary allies. We need to be cautious, but for now, they might just be the edge we need."
Ren Fulin, now fully recovered, stood up and stretched.
His mana had replenished by more than half, and he could feel the tension leaving his muscles.
Gu Jin observed the battlefield and narrowed her eyes,
"Why do I...keep on feeling as if something is off."
"Master, why do you think so?" The space asked.
"These parasites...they can sense danger...but yet they are continuing to fight...as if they are preparing for something...or waiting for something.
Space check the strongest parasite here and its cultivation level."
After a few seconds of silence, the space answered,
"Master...the strongest parasite has the strength equivalent to Tier 1 Super Rank Mage."
Gu Jin rubbed her temple,
"Wrong...wrong! Sh*t!"
"What happened, master?" The space asked.
"The strongest parasites should be at Tier 3 Super Rank Mage or Emperor Rank Mage! Otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to control the parasites" Gu Jin muttered.
"Controlling the parasites?" The space asked.
"Yes. This army of parasites may look as if they are not using their brain to fight but if you look closely you will realize that they are maintaining a certain formation.
This formation is helping them to reduce as many deaths as they can. Also every 2 hours, they change their formation...that means someone is ordering them."
"Master you are smart!" The space praised.
"Now the leader is not present here...that means he is busy somewhere else. These parasites are in grave danger yet they refuse to leave. Do you know what that means?" Gu Jin asked.
"Um...it means the leader is irresponsible?" The space guessed.
"It means...the main danger is somewhere else and preparing for something even worse." Gu Jin answered.
