Chapter 94: Qi Is Super Reliable
Chapter 94: Chapter 94: Qi Is Super Reliable
A few days without seeing each other, Shen Heying seemed like a changed person.
He had lost a lot of weight, his eyes were bloodshot, he looked unkempt and listless, as if he hadn’t slept for days.
The biggest change was his demeanor. Where he once had the full bearing of a vice president, now he seemed like a startled bird.
Yun Qiuce personally served him a cup of tea, which he carefully and gratefully accepted with both hands, repeatedly saying "thank you."
Yun Qiuce originally didn’t care much for him, but now he just felt surprised.
He thought, is this guy possessed? Suddenly he’s so polite!
"Uncle Yun," Shen Heying began with difficulty, looking sincerely at the Old Master. "I know my sudden visit is abrupt, but this matter truly cannot be hidden, and I do not wish to hide it from you. I’m begging you, please save my father."
After speaking, he gritted his teeth and made as if to kneel.
The Old Master quickly reached out to stop him.
"Say what you need to say standing. I’ve known Old Shen for many years; if he’s in trouble, I will certainly help as much as I can."
Shen Heying’s theatrics had the desired effect, and the weight on his heart eased—he had been waiting for the Old Master to say this.
Only then did he look around with an air of deep secrecy.
The Old Master, always straightforward, gestured reassuringly to calm Shen Heying’s nerves.
"We’re all family here, nothing to hide; speak freely."
Shen Heying gritted his teeth and began with difficulty:
"A series of strange events have occurred at our house a few days ago. I saw a ghost shadow outside the window. At the time, my father took out a Peach Wood Sword intending to subdue the ghost, but for some reason, he suddenly fainted. He briefly regained consciousness once but has been unconscious since. We sent him to the hospital, but they couldn’t find anything wrong; he’s currently recuperating at home. In these past days, almost everyone in my household, from the servants to the family members, has encountered the ghost shadow. So I wish to ask Uncle Yun for help to figure out what’s going on."
The Old Master looked utterly incredulous.
Such things wouldn’t be surprising if they happened to other families, but the Shen Family themselves are ghost hunters; how could they be brought to such a state by a single ghost shadow?
Yun Qiuce was the first to speak up, "A single ghost shadow? That can’t be possible; your family’s mysticism has been passed down for four generations, almost a hundred years now, how could a single ghost shadow scare you?"
Yun Kuang chimed in as well, "That’s right, you’re the vice president of the Hai State Xuanmen Association, renowned all over. Subduing a ghost should be easy for you."
Uncle and nephew exchanged knowing glances, sensing something amiss.
Shen Heying’s brow furrowed, his eyes clouded with worry, his expression akin to ice.
After a long time, he gritted his teeth, and with resolve:
"That’s because I lack real skill, and the ghost shadow is unusual, unlike anything I’ve ever heard or seen. I dare not act."
The atmosphere instantly froze, awkward with an eerie undertone.
Yun Qiuce let out an untraceable chuckle, somewhat surprised by Shen Heying’s words, yet not entirely caught off guard.
Surprised that he would so openly admit his deceit and lack of talent; not surprised because it was well known among the Xuan Sect that Shen Heying was not very capable.
All of his current reputation and status were thanks to his father, Shen Cong.
Though the Old Master usually stayed out of worldly affairs, he had heard a bit about the Shen father and son, but being kind-hearted, he didn’t wish to embarrass anyone at this time.
He shook his head at Yun Qiuce and Yun Kuang, signaling them not to speak further.
Kindly comforting, he said:
"Don’t be upset, and don’t bear too heavy a psychological burden. Since that ghost shadow frightened your father to the point of fainting, it must not be an ordinary ghost. It’s reasonable that you can’t handle it. However..."
Pausing slightly, he said with difficulty, "I did say upon retirement that I would no longer concern myself with Xuan Sect affairs. But since this involves your father, I’ll let Qi go in my stead."
"Yun Qi?"
Shen Heying’s eyes widened in surprise, a clear look of resistance on his face.
"What’s the matter, is there a problem?"
"No..." Shen Heying sighed, words failing him.
The day after his father Shen Cong fainted, he had briefly regained consciousness and instructed one thing, "Even if you ignore my words and bring a colleague over, under no circumstances should you involve the Yun Family, especially Yun Qi."
Then he fainted again.
But the Old Master suggested sending Yun Qi.
He was momentarily unsure, caught in a dilemma.
"Grandpa—"
A sweet and clear girl’s voice came through, as Yun Qi fluttered in like a little butterfly and dove into the Old Master’s arms.
The Old Master was momentarily taken aback by the powerful, loving hug, then laughed heartily.
"Slow down, slow down, we were just talking about you, and here you are."
Yun Qi lifted her chubby little face, blinking her bright phoenix eyes.
"Talking about me?" She spun in the Old Master’s embrace, looking at Shen Heying.
Her eyes squinted slightly, two dimples appearing clearly on her cheeks.
"I’ve seen this uncle before. The day Sister Ying accused me of evil cultivation, he was there too."
Shen Heying hurriedly clarified, "That was because Miss Ying personally invited me. As vice president, it’s my duty to personally look into matters of evil cultivation. But I truly believe in Miss Qi; someone so young and adorable couldn’t possibly be involved in evil cultivation, could they?"
Yun Qiuce sneered dismissively, finding Shen Heying’s flattery insincere.
Yun Qi tilted her head, her sweet smile making her resemble an innocent deer frolicking through a forest.
However, her words cut sharply:
"But Uncle’s father, Grandpa Shen, clearly said I am the reincarnation of an Evil Star. Is Uncle going against his father’s words?"
Shen Heying swallowed, not expecting this seemingly harmless child to be such a sharp thinker.
He immediately laughed it off, "That’s an entirely different matter; I have no knowledge of the issues between you and my father."
Yun Qi, unwilling to bicker, turned away and looked up with her large eyes at the Old Master.
"Grandpa, do you need Qi to help with something? Just say the word."
With that, she patted her chest, displaying the heroic spirit of a little forest hero, "Qi is super reliable!"
Her childish voice and serious demeanor melted the hearts of everyone present.
Even Shen Heying felt that his father had overreacted, calling this adorable child the reincarnation of an Evil Star—now he’s offended people!
The Old Master looked at Shen Heying, "The decision is yours to make. If you think it’s alright, I’ll have Qiuce take Qi along."
Shen Heying fell into silence, contemplating for a long time before finally gritting his teeth and nodding:
"Alright."
Given the situation, his father’s life is at stake, and the household is in turmoil from the haunting.
The truth can’t be hidden forever; if they don’t find a way to subdue the ghost shadow, eventually, people will find out about the ghost haunting the Xuan Sect Shen Family, and who would then respect them?
Yun Qi enunciated firmly, "Since you’ve agreed, there’s no backing out now."
Then she flitted away, leaving words behind in the air:
"I’m off to change my clothes."
Her voice echoed, but she was nowhere in sight, a childish breeze left lingering in the air.
The Old Master shook his head with a smile:
"Truly a child."
When it was time to set off, Yun Qi had already changed into a short skirt, with a little fox plush on her shoulder.
Yun Qiuce was surprised, "Qi, do you have that skirt? I don’t seem to remember."
Yun Qi: "Hmm..."
She looked up at the sky, thinking.
Yun Qiuce didn’t spend more than three seconds pondering the issue before he grew impatient.
"Never mind, maybe I remembered wrong."
Yun Qi: ...
Just loves how her uncle isn’t too bright.
