Chapter 488: A moment of joy but lifetime of hurt
The next morning ~~~
Elliana woke up in her room. She tried sneaking out of the palace to get her work done, but Queen Freya caught her walking out in the middle of the night, and just like that, all her plans came crashing down.
At that time she had told her that she wasn’t able to sleep just to get out of the situation, but who would’ve thought that the lady would insist on staying until the girl slept?
Elliana didn’t even remember when she fell asleep and couldn’t help but sigh.
She looked at the time and noticed it was only 7:30 in the morning.
With a sigh, she walked into the bathroom and quickly freshened up.
Now that she thought about it, her husband didn’t return to the room after he saw Mom Freya with her.
If it had been previous times, he wouldn’t have let the lady stay with her.
’Do you seriously want to see your grandson and granddaughter-in-law making love to each other in the hall?’
A chuckle escaped her mouth when she remembered what Mr. Marino had said to Queen Aubrey when she had mentioned coming to visit her randomly.
It was funny how people changed so quickly and unexpectedly.
After washing up, Elliana walked out of the bathroom, her body freezing when she saw Leila sitting on her bed.
Her eyes widened, and she looked at the witch in disbelief.
"Have you lost your mind?" Elliana rushed to her, throwing the towel on the ground carelessly as she ran towards the balcony door to close it and draw the blinds so that no one could see the witch in her room.
"You saw what I was talking about?" Leila asked.
Elliana paused.
"I don’t know what you are referring to. I need you to leave immediately. If anyone in the palace as much as felt your dark energy, they will come for your head and -"
"Are you worried about me?" Leila asked, a soft smile on her face at the pure-hearted girl, who tries so hard to become stern and evil, but her heart always stops her.
"I am worrying about myself. Don’t misunderstand," Elliana looked at the witch sharply.
Leila hummed before she stood from the bed.
"I just wanted to see how you were doing. Your... The sound of your cries echoed to all the witches who were keeping their gazes on you, and... Let’s just say I didn’t want to hear it. It... It was sad," Leila averted her gaze to hide her concern, making Elliana pause.
Does that mean her mother heard her cry too? Why didn’t she come to look for -
Then again, why would that woman keep an eye on her? Elliana scoffed at herself for even wanting her mother’s attention.
"As you can see, I am doing good. Get lost," Elliana walked to her closet to take out the dress from her closet when she heard a knock on the door, and she quickly turned to Leila.
"What are you doing? Go away!" She said to the witch before walking to the door.
"Yes?" She asked, barely opening the door to look at who it was and saw a maid standing at the door.
"Princess Elliana, this dress is sent by Mr. Lucas. He said the prince got this dress especially tailored for you and would love it if you wore it," The maid said.
Elliana was about to take the dress when she felt someone breathing on her neck.
"It’s beautiful," Leila whispered, making Elliana gasp as she looked at the maid in alert, ready to render her unconscious for a few hours until she revealed her truth herself.
But to her surprise, it didn’t look like the maid was able to see Leila, and Elliana heaved a sigh of relief.
"Thank you," Elliana took the dress from the maid’s hand and closed the door.
"Do you want me to get into a jiffy with -"
"I am sure you have decided to let go of Sebastian now that you know the truth about how important you are to him," Leila said.
Elliana didn’t turn to her. She kept standing there with her hands clenched on her dress as she looked at the fabric, her heart clenching painfully.
Leave Mr. Marino? Right. Today was the day she was supposed to leave the kingdom forever. Elliana blinked her eyes before looking at the witch and humming.
"I don’t think you are in any position to ask me any kind of questions. It’s all up to me whether I want to leave or not. Besides, don’t try to sow discord between our love. Though he is marrying the other girl for the votes, I know he still loves and cares about me. Or why would he have this dress prepared?" Elliana asked.
Leila smiled.
"If that’s the case, why did you cry-"
"I have to get ready. You need to leave. Now!" Elliana’s eyes turned dark, and Leila sighed when she saw that the girl was still struggling with her emotions.
The witch nodded.
"I will return once you have dealt with everything. Enjoy... Your last moments in the vampire Kingdom," Leila said and disappeared.
As soon as Leila left, Elliana fell on the ground, the dress clenched close to her heart.
After taking long deep breaths, she stood from her place. She didn’t want the witch’s words to ruin her day today and make her cry already when she had so much to do.
But...
Her heart was aching terribly from Leila’s words. And maybe that’s why she twisted the doorknob and walked out of the room.
She wanted to see Mr. Marino and confirm the thing that she was scared of from the moment she heard about his second marriage.
Her heart feared this confrontation the most, but she wanted to hear the truth before leaving. She owed this to herself, to all the love she poured into this relationship.
"Excuse me, have you seen Mr. Marino? I mean, the youngest prince?" Elliana stopped one of the servants, who smiled at her.
"I understood you with your first sentence only, Princess. No one here calls anyone Mr Marino, apart from you. Everyone knows who Mr Marino is since the prince banned anyone else from using this nickname apart from you," The servant smiled, and Elliana’s heart skipped a beat at what she heard.
He banned everyone from calling this name in the palace only because she calls him this? How could he turn such a simple normal formal name exclusive to himself?
A smile appeared on her face, and she nodded at the servant.
See. Leila was wrong. Even though Mr. Marino didn’t want her anymore, he still cared for her. He always did.
"Where is he?" She asked, and the servant closed her eyes, probably to ask all the servants through the mind link.
"He is in the greenhouse behind the palace. Should I escort you there, Princess?" The servant asked, but Elliana shook her head.
"I have seen the place. Don’t worry. Carry on with your work and thank you," Elliana turned around with a happy smile on her face.
She walked downstairs and went straight to the backside of the royal palace on the west side where she knew the place was.
She smelt his presence because of her enhanced witch powers near nature before she saw him.
The greenhouse of the royal palace was really big and extended to a few acres. If one was not familiar, they ought to get lost.
With a content sigh, she was about to enter the place when she noticed from the distance that he wasn’t there alone.
Thinking he was busy, she was about to turn around when she saw something she shouldn’t have.
The other person turned around slightly and the long skirt came into her vision to affirm that the other person was a woman.
’Don’t overthink, Elliana. It can be anyone,’ She told herself, but what happened next, took her breath away.
Mr. Marino stepped ahead and hugged the woman. The woman placed her hands on his back. Elliana saw the same bangle on her hand that she saw on Brooklyn’s hand last night, shattering her heart to millions of shards as the happy smile on her face immediately faltered.
