Chapter 295: A bunch of complicated threads of truth

"I can’t believe you guys!" Cleopatra shouted, and Hera shook in her place, making Artemis immediately hold her hand.

Currently, all three of them, Hera, Artemis, and Marianna were standing in front of Cleopatra, their coral clan leader.

Someone snitched on them that they were roaming the vampire Kingdom’s grounds. Artemis had hinted to Cleopatra that they would be going to the coasts of the nation to gather some information regarding the mission, and she had agreed dejectedly, but this? They clearly crossed their limits.

"Give us a chance to explain -" Hera started.

"You shut your damn mouth!" Cleopatra raised her voice, making Hera’s ears ring with a painful piercing, and she fell to her knees, making Artemis immediately hug her.

"Cleopatra! You are hurting her!" Artemis shouted, and the latter only smiled coldly.

"Oh? So she is hurting? Why can’t I see it?" Cleopatra raised the ringing in her tone, which was focussed on Hera’s mind only and tears welled up in Hera’s eyes.

"Why her? Why should she be the only one to get the punishment? We all went there!" Marianna raised her voice.

Artemis looked at the girl and pressed his lips, helplessly. Marianna was like this. Though she acts cold and unbothered, she has always been protective of them and everyone she feels close to herself.

"Don’t worry, Marianna, I’ll come to you too," Cleopatra turned around and sat on her seat before she removed her ringing from Hera’s mind space.

Her eyes turned soft when Hera fell limp in Artemis’s arms.

"This..." Cleopatra started.

"When will you guys understand that you are more than my family? Yes, there are twenty or so more people in this clan, but there is a reason only you guys are allowed so close to me. You guys are the closest to me.

Tell me, what would you have felt when you had heard your family members were risking their lives in the enemy’s territory and lying to you?" Cleopatra asked.

Artemis’s anger immediately cooled down, and he looked down at his feet, ashamed of his actions.

He understood where their clan leader was coming from. They had indeed put her in a tight spot.

If they had been even a couple of hours late in bringing Hera to their regional waters and giving her the special tonic to recuperate that Cleopatra makes, the chances were Hera would’ve been hurt to a level that they wouldn’t have been able to bring her back from.

It was a risk they took this time. They thought that everything would be fine and Hera would be able to manage for a couple of days, but she couldn’t. In fact, they all were becoming weaker.

It was a wrong decision. Things wouldn’t have been so tough if they had just brought Cleopatra’s special tonic with them and a jar of stored water from their regions.

But since they were lying to the leader that they wouldn’t pass the Vampire’s territories too close, they couldn’t ask for the tonic, which always needs the reason to be written on the registration when taking it.

"We were doing it all to find the human girl they must’ve locked the queen siren’s powers in," Artemis bowed in respect, and Cleopatra looked at him with raised brows.

"How do you know that the siren powers are locked inside a human?" She asked, and Artemis narrowed his brows.

"What do you mean? If not human then who? The queen would definitely not entrust her powers to those leeches that she hated and those werewolves who had been loyal to their kind only. The witches can’t be used because a witch of the highest power would be needed to hide and lock the powers of the queen on the sirens. And they would want to use them too.

Only a human baby who has been prepared to be the vessel has the capabilities of keeping the powers to them," Artemis explained.

Cleopatra chuckled. What started with a smile turned into a full-blown laugh, which made the three of them look at each other in confusion.

"Oh boy, you are so gullible. No wonder you guys have trouble finding the so-called human that you have been looking for.

If you wanted to look for such a human, why didn’t you go to the human side of the kingdom? It would’ve been much easier for you to find that human. A siren’s powers react when they meet another siren, and it could’ve been used to identify the vessel," Cleopatra said.

Artemis looked at Hera. That was right. Why didn’t they think of it that way? Probably if they had focussed on finding that human by roaming the human kingdom, the chances of finding that person were higher than finding a hidden witch with hidden intentions.

"We are sorry, Cleopatra. Our methodologies have been wrong from the beginning. Please forgive us -" Artemis started, but Cleopatra tutted her tongue before shaking her head.

"I am not certain, Artemis. It’s just an assumption. Do you think the queen of the sirens, the divine beholder of those magical powers who can bring back the dead to life will take such a risk to hide those powers from just any human? Work your brains, will you? If it would’ve been so easy, the dark witches would’ve gotten a hold of that human sooner than any of the species," Cleopatra sighed.

That was what it was all about. The hidden secretive powers that only the queen and her loyal people knew about. The powers that had the capabilities and magical chants to bring the dead back.

That was the main reason, everyone

from the queen’s motherland sacrificed themselves for the greater good.

"You have no idea about anything, Artemis. Do you think these siren powers are all about restoring what should belong to us? That it’s all about getting back the powers that should’ve been given to us sirens rather than some other species and how the queen didn’t trust her own species?" Cleopatra walked to Hera and cupped her cheeks before giving her more tonic to heal her sooner.

She tucked the beautiful girl’s hair behind her ears and took a deep shaky breath.

"Didn’t you learn your lesson the last time, sweetheart? Nothing in this world is as easy as it looks.

These are some complicated strings that have been entangled in a way that no one will truly understand until everyone starts revealing their true colors," Cleopatra murmured as she started walking back to her seat.

Artemis helped Hera on the wall before he stood and rushed to their leader.

"What do you mean by their true colors, Tara?" Artemis asked Cleopatra, and the latter chuckled before evening her hair, twisting a strand of hair between her fingers and smiling.

"What do I mean? Would you like to hear a story, Artemis?" Cleopatra asked, and Artemis looked at Hera and Marianna, who nodded in agreement.

They were wary of listening to any story.

This wasn’t the first time she asked them if they wanted to hear a story and every single time she was always ready with one of the scariest stories in the world.

However, for their search, they knew they needed to hear it.

"Okay," Artemis nodded with a little hesitancy.

"It’s the tale of Queen Elizabeth," Cleopatra said, and Artemis and Marianna sat down to hear what their leader wanted to tell this time.
