Chapter 49: Male Leads Meet

Adeline’s heart started beating fast, she didn’t expect for the main characters to meet this early but it happened. Watching it unfold in front of her was not thrilling, it was downright horrifying...

"You- stay away from Linny." Dimitri stepped forward thinking he was protecting her.

"Hah, who do you think you are to order me, the Crown Prince?" First Benedict and now another? Cassian couldn’t help but narrow his eyes, it was hard for him to control his powers. There was a chill in the air that made everyone shiver. Only he knew that he was the reason for this change in the environment. More and more flies started to buzz around her, it was annoying.

"You should let her decide what she wants." Benedict came to her defence and took her hand which made Dimitri and Cassian grit their teeth, both were unwilling to back down.

In the corner of her eye, she could see Edward and Annora. Instead of focusing on the female lead, he stared right at her. His eyes never left her since she entered the banquet hall.

How did it get to this point? Adeline sighed.

"Linny, Aaron, Dimitri, I am giving you five minutes or else you will have to walk all the way to the palace!"

"Coming!"

Adeline shouted. Alaric was a stickler for rules, he had to be early to show respect to the hosts, especially since they were the royal family. He reminded them numerous times earlier but they were still a bit behind schedule, they were kids after all.

Until their father got back, Alaric was the man of the house. He would soon turn fifteen and leave for the academy. Although they annoyed the life out of him, he cherished what little time they had left.

Aaron dressed up pretty quickly, he was helping Dimitri adjust to the new clothing.

"I look so pretty!"

"You do, my lady." The maids helped Adeline with her dress and did her hair. It was fluffy and curled and lay beautifully on her right shoulder. She wore golden hair clips that made her look absolutely divine.

Swirls of white contrasted the lilac of the dress; the ruffles and lace weren’t overdone, they were elegant, and they were just right.

Once in the carriage, Dimitri kept stealing glances at Adeline. He was aware that it wasn’t appropriate but couldn’t help it.

"Dimitri."

He flinched upon hearing his name. Was he caught? His heart was beating fast as he slowly turned to look at Adeline. She stared right at him with those clear blue eyes. Was she going to scold him?

"Since it’s your first time at the palace stay right by my side. Aaron and Alaric will have to dance with the girls because they are old enough."

Why does she act like he was younger? He was almost the same age as Aaron, he just doesn’t look it yet...

"But, I am old enough too."

"You’re just a child, Dimitri. Be a good boy and stay by my side in the palace. With me here no one will look down on you."

Adeline’s thoughts went in a completely different direction. Dimitri was hoping she wouldn’t treat him like a child, while Adeline was worried he would get bullied. Children are mean, they have no filter.

Many of them were elitist, she couldn’t fully blame them, they were the reflections of their parents.

Though Dimitri was now under the House of Kendrick, he wasn’t from the House of Kendrick. They would look down on him and his background. Saying he was a distant cousin would be fine on the surface level, but she knew how those children would treat him.

"Linny, we are going to the palace so make sure to behave yourself."

Adeline took offence, when has she not? She was always well-behaved.

Alaric secretly shot a look at Dimitri. He was a good child. He would be there to reign in her reckless nature.

Adeline turned to see Aaron trying not to smile. He found it funny when she was scolded! She pouted and kicked him when he wasn’t paying attention.

"Hey!"

She completely ignored him and looked outside the window instead.

She wondered about the Goddess, she used to pop by regularly but it had been a while since she contacted her.

Once they reached it, Dimitri jumped out and reached for her hand. He wanted to help her get down just like he had seen knights do.

"You’re such a gentleman!" Adeline gladly took his hand and got down. She was a child and had a hard time reaching the step, but he made it so much easier.

The banquet was held during the evening, after sundown, they wanted to showcase the wealth, beauty and influence they hold.

Each chandelier above was made of diamonds, it radiated light in all directions. Flowers, gold, and precious gems were just scattered like common items.

The Imperial concubine’s side of the palace was decked in glory. She went out of her way to ensure that precious stones were the star. The Empress’ family was in the mining industry and made quite a lot of money through this.

The Imperial concubine wanted to tell her ’subtly’ that she wasn’t special. There was nothing subtle about her move. It was quite obvious. The Emperor didn’t care as long as the Royal Family’s reputation wasn’t tarnished.

Everyone was completely enamoured by the display. All except the Empress. She tried her best to hide her scowls.

’She dared to compare herself to me?’

The Empress decided that she wouldn’t take this insult lying down.

Today will be the day the Empress pushes Cassian to the top. She will make sure her son will step all over that illegitimate child!

Cassian checked the wounds on his back. They were healing well. That won’t do... That won’t do at all...

"Agh..." The next thing he knew he was making sure his wounds stayed open. Only then could he get leverage over Adeline. He needed every bit of leverage. What he wanted, he will get.

He watched the water turn red with blood, and his reflection staring back at him.
