Chapter 235: We’ll See

Annora’s voice cut through the tension like a blade. "Why are you so surprised to see me?" she asked, her tone light and amused, though her eyes glinted with something sharper.

Adeline didn’t answer immediately, her mind still struggling to process the sight of Annora standing there in her pristine white robe, radiating Holy Power. Dimitri, however, wasn’t one to remain silent. He stepped forward slightly, his gaze cold and untrusting.

"What are you doing here?" he demanded, his tone sharp and his eyes narrowed. There was no warmth in his expression, only suspicion.

Annora tilted her head, her lips curling into a faint smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. "Why?" she repeated, as though the question amused her. "To save them, of course. Isn’t it obvious? After all, I am the Saintess of the Holy Temple."

Her words sent a shiver down Adeline’s spine. Annora’s voice was calm, almost mocking.

Adeline clenched her fists, trying to steady her emotions. She’d always had a complicated relationship with Annora.

In the beginning, she’d hoped they might get along, that their differences could be smoothed over. But it hadn’t taken long for her to realize that Annora harboured a deep resentment towards her. And when that became clear, Adeline had given up trying and returned the same energy.

Now, standing in front of Annora, who had not only returned but somehow regained her holy powers, Adeline couldn’t help but feel unsettled.

"How does she have powers again?" Adeline asked the Goddess, her frustration bubbling to the surface.

The Goddess, who had been unusually quiet, finally responded, though her voice was flustered and uncertain. "Adeline... I don’t know. This shouldn’t be possible."

Adeline gritted her teeth, her irritation mounting. "Seriously? How could you not know? You’re supposed to be the creator of this world!"

The Goddess sighed, her tone apologetic. "I understand your frustration, but you must remember, I didn’t bring this world to life, I simply made it up. I wrote about it, shaped its characters and story, but there are powers beyond my control."

She let the topic drop, it was not the time or the place to pick this issue up.

She needed to stay focused on the situation at hand. Her eyes returned to Annora, who was watching her with an expression that Adeline couldn’t quite read.

What does she want now? Adeline wondered. Why is she back?

Annora’s gaze flicked to her as if sensing the question lingering in her mind.

"I’m curious," Adeline said, her voice cutting through the silence. "I thought you had a bad ending. So why did you go down the same route and become the Saintess again?"

Her words were laced with a deliberate edge, and she knew it. She didn’t know exactly what had happened to Annora in her past life, the Goddess had always been frustratingly vague about the details, but she had a feeling that provoking Annora might make her reveal more than she intended.

Like a villain descending into a monologue, spilling all the vital information.

It worked... Well, not really.

Annora’s calm facade cracked. Her expression twisted with anger, and her voice rose, sharp and defensive. "What do YOU know about my past life?!" How dare she try to judge her?!

Her outburst hung in the air, and for a moment, the tension was so thick it felt suffocating. Annora’s eyes darted around, realizing belatedly that they weren’t alone. The freed prisoners were still nearby, and though they were too far away to hear the specifics of the conversation.

Annora took a deep breath, visibly reigning in her temper. When she spoke again, her voice was quieter but no less intense. "It doesn’t matter how you know," she said, her tone dripping with disdain. "What matters is that I have everything I need to make my ending work this time."

Adeline raised an eyebrow, unimpressed by the dramatics. "Oh?" she said, folding her arms. "And what’s that supposed to mean?"

Annora’s eyes narrowed, her expression turning smug. "Can you escape the fate of dying at Benedict’s hands?" she asked, her voice low and taunting. "I doubt it."

For a moment, Adeline’s chest tightened at the mention of Benedict. The memory of the original story flashed through her mind—the brutal scene where Benedict killed Adeline in a fit of rage. But she pushed the thought aside quickly. That was the old plot, a version of events that no longer existed.

She let out a short laugh, shaking her head. "I’m not worried about Benedict." The story had changed, he had changed. They were close friends, he had always been by her side. Whatever Annora might pull, it would not faze her.

Besides, if worse came to worst, she had her lightning powers to defend herself. Nothing scared her, this was the confidence that came with power.

Her unwavering confidence seemed to strike a nerve. Annora’s expression darkened, her anger bubbling just beneath the surface.

"Just you wait," Annora muttered, her voice low but seething with frustration.

Without another word, she turned and walked away, her white robes billowing behind her as she disappeared into the shadows.

Adeline watched her go, her heart still racing from the encounter. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself.

Adeline agreed, her voice quieter now. She looked up at him, her brow furrowed. "Do you think she’s dangerous?"

Dimitri’s gaze softened slightly as he turned to face her, "I know that whatever will come your way we will be dealing with it together."

For years, Annora had been hidden, completely out of sight, as though she’d vanished from the world entirely. And now, out of nowhere, here she was, back in her Saintess robes, brimming with Holy Power.

It didn’t make sense.

The first name that popped into Adeline’s head was Edward. Her eyes narrowed as she considered it. He was the only one she could think of who might have had the knowledge or ability to pull off something like this. Edward was always scheming, always lurking in the shadows.

She was his target and she knew that was not about to change anytime soon. So Annora’s appearance and his schemes had to have been linked.

Her fists clenched at the thought. If Edward was involved, this whole situation just became ten times more dangerous.

"What do I even do about this?" she muttered under her breath. The answer came quickly, almost instinctively. She could confront him. March into the Holy Temple, demand answers. It was like being reckless was all she knew. She groaned in despair.

Sometimes, crazy ideas worked, and honestly, the thought of storming into Edward’s space was crazy but who could say it won’t work?

"Me!" The Goddess screamed. "I say it won’t work. Stop thinking about it!"

Adeline pouted but did not continue the thought.

Another concern pulled at her thoughts. Annora’s words about Benedict.

She couldn’t shake the way Annora had mentioned him, her tone dripping with something-was it malice? Confidence? Whatever it was, it had left a sour taste in Adeline’s mouth.

Benedict.

Adeline’s stomach churned. While she wasn’t afraid of Annora herself, there was something unsettling about how she’d spoken of Benedict, almost like she knew something Adeline didn’t.

The thought of Annora doing something to Benedict made her heart race. He was her friend, one of the few people she trusted. If Annora thought she could hurt him or manipulate him in some way, Adeline needed to know.

"I need to see him," she said aloud, her voice firm.

Dimitri, who had been quietly watching her as she paced, raised an eyebrow. "Right now?" he asked, his tone calm but slightly amused.

Adeline nodded, already considering the fastest way to reach Benedict. A teleportation circle seemed like the best option. It would get her there instantly, and she could make sure everything was fine before Annora had the chance to cause any trouble.

But just as she was about to move, Dimitri stepped in front of her, blocking her path. "Take a deep breath," he said gently, placing a hand on her shoulder.

Adeline stopped, blinking up at him in surprise. "What?"

"You’re stressed," Dimitri said plainly. "And jumping to conclusions isn’t going to help anyone. Benedict is probably fine."

She opened her mouth to protest but she didn’t. "Annora said a lot of things," Dimitri interrupted, his tone calm but firm. "She was trying to rattle you, and it’s working. That’s exactly what she wants."

She silently nodded.

Dimitri gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "It’s already late," he said. "We’ve had a long day, and rushing off now isn’t going to yield anything."

Adeline hesitated, torn between her worry for Benedict and the logic of Dimitri’s words. She trusted him, and deep down, she knew he was probably right. But the unease in her chest refused to fully settle.

Finally, she let out a sigh, nodding reluctantly. "Fine," she said. "We’ll go in the morning."

Dimitri nodded and turned to face the hideout.
