Chapter 234: Her Return

"Well, she kinda does." The Goddess quickly chimed in.

Adeline rolled her eyes. Yeah, yeah. She knew what the Goddess was about to say. She was brought into this world to change the plot, so she kind of had to ’save’ the world all by herself.

They crept closer, sticking to the shadows as they approached the building. Dimitri gestured for Adeline to stay back while he peered through one of the windows.

"What do you see?" Adeline asked in a hushed tone.

Dimitri’s expression darkened. "There are people inside. Refugees, by the looks of it. They’re locked in cages."

Adeline’s fists clenched at her sides. "Those monsters..."

Dimitri held up a hand, silencing her. "There’s more. I can sense magic- strong, dark magic. They’re performing some kind of ritual."

Adeline’s stomach twisted. She knew they had to act quickly, but rushing in without a plan would be reckless.

"What’s the plan?" she whispered, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her.

Dimitri turned to her, his eyes filled with determination. "We’ll take them by surprise. I’ll disable their magic wards, and then we’ll free the prisoners. Once they’re safe, we’ll deal with the ones responsible."

Adeline nodded, her resolve hardening. She would do whatever it took to help those people and put an end to the horrors being committed here.

"Ready?" Dimitri asked, his voice low but firm.

"Always," Adeline replied, a fierce glint in her eyes.

Before Adeline and Dimitri could set foot inside the hideout, an unexpected blast shook the air around them.

The force was deafening, making the ground tremble beneath their feet. Moments later, a blinding light erupted from the building, forcing Adeline to shield her eyes with her arm.

Dimitri instinctively stepped in front of her, his protective nature kicking in as he tried to shield her from whatever was happening. But even he had to turn his face away from the overwhelming brightness.

Adeline’s heart began to race. That light... That power... It wasn’t just magic. It was unmistakably Holy Powers. She could feel it in her very bones, the purity of it humming in the air like a divine chorus.

Adeline was growing more worried by the second. That power- it was strong. Maybe even as strong as hers. Her mind raced with questions. Who could possibly have such strength?

Quickly, she closed her eyes and reached out to the Goddess in her mind.

"Who is that? What’s going on?" she demanded.

The Goddess’s voice answered, but it was far from calm. It was shaky, uncertain, and, for the first time since Adeline had ever heard it, genuinely rattled.

"Adeline... that... how...?" The words stuttered out of the Goddess, as though even she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.

"What?" Adeline pressed. "Who is it?"

Before the Goddess could answer, a figure stepped out of the shadows of the hideout. Adeline froze, her breath caught in her throat.

The figure walked with calm confidence, bathed in the fading glow of holy light. They moved toward the cages, where the prisoners were trapped, and with a graceful gesture, the locks on the cages burst open.

"You are safe now," the figure said softly, their voice carrying a soothing warmth. "May the Sun Goddess bless you."

Adeline’s heart stopped. That voice... That face...

The figure was a woman with soft brown hair that cascaded over her shoulders, wearing a pristine white robe that glowed faintly with the remnants of holy power. Her eyes, a warm brown, were kind as they looked at the freed prisoners, offering comfort and reassurance.

"Annora," Adeline whispered, her voice barely audible.

It couldn’t be. It just couldn’t. Annora was supposed to be dead. Everyone had thought so. She had disappeared without a trace, her fate assumed to be sealed long ago. But here she was, standing before them, alive and well.

The Goddess told her and she sensed it herself... Annora did not possess Holy Powers... With her disappearance, Adeline thought there would be one less trouble for her to deal with. After all, Annora seemed to hate her. But here she was...

Adeline’s knees felt weak as a wave of emotions hit her all at once- shock, confusion, and even a flicker of fear.

Dimitri, still standing protectively in front of her, glanced back at her, his sharp eyes narrowing. "Are you alright?"

"Yes," Adeline managed to say, though her voice trembled. "That’s... Annora."

"Annora?" Dimitri’s brows furrowed. He remembered that incident in the cave up in the mountains. How they found... Well, they thought they found evidence of her being dealt with by Edward.

As if on cue, the Goddess’s voice rang out again in Adeline’s mind, louder and more panicked than before.

"This can’t be," the Goddess stammered. "Adeline, how does she have powers? She shouldn’t... She shouldn’t have any!"

Adeline’s lips parted in shock. The Goddess herself didn’t understand what was happening. That thought alone made her stomach twist.

Before Adeline could respond, Annora turned her head in their direction. Her brown eyes locked onto Adeline’s, and for a moment, the world seemed to stand still.

"Adeline," Annora said, her voice calm but carrying an edge of something deeper- something unreadable.

Adeline felt like her breath had been stolen. It wasn’t just the shock of seeing Annora alive. It was the look in her eyes. Those brown eyes held a mix of emotions that Adeline couldn’t quite decipher. Was it relief? Anger? Resentment?

Annora stepped closer, her movements deliberate and measured. "You look well," she said, though there was a strange undercurrent in her tone as if her words carried a hidden meaning.

"How are y-" Before Adeline could ask anything she was cut off by her.

"Dimitri." She acknowledged his presence. She was much more interested in him than Adeline anyway. She didn’t look at her, she simply spoke to him. "They will be fine. I know how kind-hearted you always are."

Dimitri frowned, he did not like her talking as if they were familiar.
