Chapter 217: Fate Is Sealed

"I’ll keep going," she said softly. "I don’t know what’s ahead, or what’s being kept from me, but I’ll trust you. I’ll trust that you’re doing what you think is best."

The Goddess’s sobs quieted, replaced by a deep, trembling breath. "Thank you," she said, her voice filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Adeline. You don’t know how much that means to me."

Adeline smiled faintly, exhaustion tugging at her again. "We’ll figure it out," she murmured, her voice growing quieter. "Together."

After this, Adeline seemed more relieved, she was able to fall asleep very quickly.

The infirmary was cloaked in silence, the faint light of the moon streaming through the window and casting soft shadows across the room.

Adeline lay in the bed, her breathing slow and steady as she slept, her face pale but peaceful. Cassian stood by the door, his hands clenched at his sides, his heart heavy with guilt.

He had waited until the dead of night to visit, knowing it was the only time he could bring himself to face her. Even now, it took everything in him to step closer, each step felt increasingly difficult. She probably hated him, he thought bitterly. Perhaps more than she had before. He almost got her killed.

He stopped a few feet from her bed, his gaze fixed on her fragile form. His mind replayed the events of that day, the guilt clawing at him with each passing second.

Cassian had never been more terrified than when he pulled Adeline from the pond. Her body had been so still, her face so pale. For a moment, he thought he had been too late. But when she coughed, water spilling from her lips, relief and anger flooded him in equal measure.

He made sure to rest her on the side, he didn’t want her to choke on any water that could have been in her lungs.

The relief was short-lived.

Lucas.

The man stood nearby, his face carefully composed as he explained to the professors how he had been ambushed, how he, too, was a victim of the attack.

Cassian had seen the faint smirk tugging at the corner of Lucas’s lips, the smug satisfaction in his eyes as he glanced at Adeline’s unconscious form.

The sight ignited something primal in Cassian.

Cassian’s magic surged before he could even think. The air grew cold, frost spreading across the ground beneath his feet. His rage was palpable, raw and unrelenting. The gathered professors gasped as the temperature plummeted, their breaths forming visible puffs in the frigid air.

Lucas’s eyes widened slightly, but he quickly schooled his expression into something neutral. "Crown Prince, this is hardly the time for—"

Cassian didn’t let him finish.

He raised his hand, a massive shard of ice forming in the air before hurtling toward Lucas with deadly precision.

The professors reacted immediately, their own magic flaring to counter Cassian’s attack. But before they could intervene, a shimmering barrier of ice erupted around the area, cutting them off.

Cassian had sealed them all out. No one was going to stop him. Lucas’ fate was sealed... He was going to make sure of it.

Lucas barely managed to dodge the ice shard, the sharp edge grazing his cheek and leaving a thin trail of blood in its wake. He stumbled back, his mind racing. And just before he could recover, an icicle pierced through his shoulder rendering it useless.

There were a million thoughts going through his mind. Pain, shock, fear because of his miscalculation?

What is he doing? Cassian had always been calculated, cold, and logical in every decision he made. The ruthless Crown Prince would never jeopardise his carefully constructed image, not even in private. Yet here he was, unleashing his full power in front of an audience, disregarding every consequence.

All for her.

Lucas gritted his teeth as another massive shard of ice narrowly missed him, slamming into the ground where he had been standing moments before.

The impact sent icy fragments flying in all directions, cutting shallow gashes across his arms and face. His right shoulder throbbed painfully, a dull ache that threatened to make him collapse.

He glared at Cassian, who stood amidst the swirling frost like a storm given form, his eyes filled with a cold fury Lucas had never seen before. Even as Cassian struck the final blow in his previous life there was no anger, there were no feelings in those eyes.

Always calm and calculated, but now... There was anger, but also a hint of fear.

Cassian wasn’t thinking about strategy or consequences right now. Lucas could see it in his eyes. This wasn’t the Cassian he had always known—the manipulative heir who would do anything to secure his place on the throne. This was a man driven by pure, unrestrained rage.

Didn’t he hate her? Did he change because she has lightning powers? He could not afford to lose a powerful ally. That was it.

He remembered how this brother of his ordered his friend to be killed. That woman gave him everything only to be killed in such a pathetic manner. That was probably the first time he witnessed Cassian’s true nature.

But now, something seemed to have changed. He was the kind of person who could abandon an ally with no remorse, he would never go this far for Adeline, right? So, what changed?!

Lucas froze his injured arm, numbing the pain as best he could with his limited ice magic. It wasn’t much compared to the torrent of power Cassian wielded, but it was enough to keep him moving. If he didn’t fight back, Cassian would kill him.

Another ice spear formed in Cassian’s hand, jagged and deadly, its sharp edges gleaming in the moonlight. Without hesitation, he hurled it toward Lucas, the sheer force of the throw sending a gust of icy wind through the clearing.

Lucas dove to the side, barely managing to avoid the projectile. He rolled to his feet, panting heavily. His mind raced. Cassian was stronger, faster, and far more skilled. There was no way he could win a direct fight.

But he didn’t need to win.

He just needed to survive.
