Chapter 146: To Edward
Chapter 146: To Edward
The Goddess immediately stopped in her tracks, I wanted to praise her, but why does it sound like an insult?
Maybe it was simply out of habit, she got used to being so casual with Adeline she stopped using her very ’extra’ way of wording things. She got used to Adeline teasing her and vice versa. It was very hard to praise someone you are used to teasing!
Adeline made her decision. She couldn’t keep this to herself, and she certainly couldn’t stage a robbery now. Taking a deep breath, she left the study and began waking the household. The servants who woke up were very confused.
One part of her felt like it was not her fault, she was not the one acting like a freaking psychopath! Edward was! But then she also felt that it was because of her meddling that indirectly caused this whole mess.
So how much blame should she actually carry? Should she simply say, well they are just characters of a story, they are not real and move on? But that would mean her father and brother’s love for her was not real... That was not a thought she was willing to entertain.
Because of her, they missed a whole day of work! They were behind schedule! Seeing them run to finish their tasks Adeline felt guilty. This wasn’t her intention. She told them to consider this a day off and take it easy.
She woke up Aaron before waking up Alaric. She slowly walked towards his room. She was extremely nervous! "Alaric!" She called out to wake him up.
He gasped and woke up. His reaction make Adeline frown, he sounded like a sleep-deprived mother! He stumbled out of his room, his hair dishevelled and his expression groggy. "Adeline? What’s going on?"
He opened the curtains to see what time it was because he couldn’t believe his eyes! The Sun was setting! He rubbed his eyes again, how could he be so sure it wasn’t rising...
He looked out again, no, it was setting alright. Was he... Asleep the entire day?!
"So... To catch you up... I put you guys to sleep, I snuck out, I got new powers and I woke you up. Alrighty, onto the main agenda now-" Adeline quickly wanted to skim over her war crimes but Alaric would not let her go that easily.
"Wait. What?!" Even though he was groggy, he was able to immediately catch the stuff she wanted to skim over.
"There’s something you need to see," she said, her voice steady despite the chaos in her mind.
Slowly but surely Aaron joined them too. He was stumbling along the way, he was barely awake!
The moment he entered the room, he headed for the sofa and collapsed on it. He wanted to sleep. Adeline looked at him in disdain.
You slept the entire day! How much sleep do you need?!
Shaking her head she showed her brother the document she found. She knew her father intended to keep this a secret... But she didn’t agree!
"There’s something happening... Something Father didn’t tell us," She began. "A war is coming."
"Adeline," Alaric said, his tone sharp. "Where did you get this?"
"It was in Father’s study," She admitted. "I know I shouldn’t have gone through his things, but you need to see this. The Holy Temple and the Crown are at odds, and the Imperial Army is involved. Father left for the capital because of this."
Alaric’s jaw tightened. He glanced at Aaron who was sleeping soundly, then back at Adeline. "You shouldn’t have gone snooping," He began to scold her.
Adeline hung her head, letting him vent. She knew he was right. But when he finished, she lifted her gaze and asked, "Did you know? Did Father tell you why he was summoned?"
Alaric hesitated, his usual confidence faltering. "No," He said finally. "I didn’t know."
He was lying. Adeline was sure of it. She also knew that Aaron didn’t know. If Aaron knew... She felt like he would tell her.
Adeline’s chest tightened. If Alaric was hiding the truth, it meant he was trying to protect her, just like their father.
She didn’t need their protection! This started because of her and she intended to end it. No war, war causes devastation. So many people die on both sides. She couldn’t have that happening, especially since she was the reason for the war...
Maybe because he was so occupied with Adeline finding out about the war, he didn’t question how all of them fell asleep! They were too eager to catch up with their missed activities, they were too busy to scold her.
Perhaps, once they were free and had time to think, they realised how a child got them all to sleep, now should they be thankful? It was the best rest they had in a while. A dreamless sleep.
Adeline retreated to her room after the confrontation, her mind buzzing with thoughts. She had left the mansion to gain power, to protect her family. But what good were her powers if they remained a secret?
She sat at her desk, staring at a blank piece of parchment. Slowly, deliberately, she picked up a quill and began to write.
The letter was addressed to Edward. She wanted to ask him what the hell he wanted. From calling back healers, and starting a plague to the imminent war... Did he want the destruction of this world?!
She only knew one thing, her actions were a catalyst to his insane behaviour, thus she decided to confront him.
Adeline chose her words carefully. She did not mention her holy powers, she wouldn’t admit to it.
Instead, she wrote in vague terms, acknowledging that she was aware of the tensions between the Temple and the Crown. She ended the letter with a simple question: What do you want?
When she finished, she sealed the letter and summoned a carrier bird. The creature perched on her window, its beady eyes glinting in the moonlight.
"Take this to the Holy Temple," She instructed. The bird cawed softly, then took flight, disappearing into the night.
At the Holy Temple, Edward sat in his private chambers, sifting through reports and documents. A knock at the door interrupted his work.
"Come in," he called.
A messenger entered, holding a letter. "It’s from the House of Kendrick," The messenger said, bowing.
Edward’s lips curled into a smirk as he took the letter. He dismissed the messenger with a wave of his hand and broke the seal. As he read, his smirk widened.
"So," He murmured, "She’s finally made contact."
Who else but her would do this? The Marquess? He would never contact them first, nor would his sons... But Adeline was different... She was more perceptive than he thought.
She was wiser than he imagined, initiating contact and trying to negotiate with him... She recognised his true power, didn’t she?
The others are simply fools to dare to go against them... War? Hah, why call it a war when everyone knew it would be one-sided?
Edward didn’t fear the upcoming confrontation, he welcomed it, and he had been preparing for it. He had many tricks up his sleeves and he intended to use them to gain control of the Emperor this time.
Controlling the Captain, the Head Priest, what a waste. He should dream bigger, he intended to control the Emperor, turning him into a puppet to do his bidding.
