Chapter 145: A War?

The Goddess’s voice kept hovering from above, guiding her along the path to avoid monsters. Honestly, she wouldn’t mind meeting some monsters. She wanted to vent and use her lightning powers.

They would be the perfect test subjects. But alas, it was not to be. She firmly scared off all the predators in the vicinity. She didn’t realise just how strong her powers were... It could rival the male leads.

Was it really her or was it the power of the Sun Goddess? Either way she was safe for now and she did not need to be on guard.

The Goddess wanted to let her discover it herself so she kept silent. It was hard, she wanted to scream it out loud but she stayed silent.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Adeline made a silent vow.

She would master her new powers. Not just for herself, but for Dimitri, for her brothers, and for everyone she cared about. If life was going to keep taking pieces of her world away, she would make sure she was strong enough to protect what remained.

For now, though, she allowed herself one final glance back at the path Dimitri had taken, whispering a silent prayer for his safety.

"Be safe, Dimitri," she murmured. "And don’t forget about me."

The journey home was long, but her resolve burned brighter with every step.

Because of everything she went through, she forgot about the situation back home, they were all still asleep! What was her plan? If she woke them up, she would get into trouble!

Adeline’s horse trotted up the winding path toward the Kendrick estate. The ride home was slower than usual, the realisation had hit her like a bolt of lightning! Pun intended.

She straightened in her saddle, panic settling in her chest. If she woke them up now, she’d undoubtedly get into trouble. Questions would be asked—questions she wasn’t prepared to answer.

Her lightning powers will be kept a secret too! She didn’t intend to reveal it unless it was absolutely necessary, she didn’t want to have any more eyes on her than she already has.

She tugged on the reins, halting her horse as she considered her options.

If she played this wrong, she might have to explain why she was wandering the woods in the dead of night. Worse, her newfound powers might be exposed prematurely.

Adeline groaned, burying her face in her hands. "Why do I always get myself into these situations?"

The person who gave her remained silent. She dusted her hands and left, it wasn’t her problem now, let the child deal with it herself.

She had to think of a way to avoid suspicion. After a moment, an idea sparked in her mind—a reckless, foolish idea, but it was the best she had.

Adeline decided to stage a robbery.

Her reasoning was simple: if the household woke up and found everyone—including her—still asleep, they would suspect some kind of external plot.

She could claim that someone had cast a spell to put the entire estate to sleep while they looted the mansion. It would explain the inexplicable drowsiness and cover up her absence.

But there was a problem. If nothing was stolen, her story would fall apart. Why would robbers go through the trouble of incapacitating an entire household only to leave empty-handed?

Adeline frowned, tapping her chin in thought. "I’ll have to take something," She muttered. "Something valuable, but not irreplaceable."

Sometimes her genius is frightening... Frighteningly stupid.

Inside, the mansion was eerily silent. The grand halls, usually bustling with servants and family members, were deserted. Adeline’s footsteps echoed faintly as she crept toward her father’s study.

The study was a treasure trove of valuables—antique trinkets, expensive quills, and a safe filled with gold coins. Or maybe even military secrets! Nah, she wouldn’t do that. Adeline hesitated at the door, her heart pounding. She had never stolen anything in her life.

"Well, there’s a first time for everything," she muttered, pushing the door open.

See, was it stealing when all of this technically in a way belonged to her? Her father said many times that what’s his is hers. So, she wasn’t stealing, she was simply misplacing things on purpose and then lying about it.

It didn’t sound much better but that’s the narrative she’s running with so that her conscious would shut up and stop making her feel guilty.

The room was dimly lit by the glow of the moon streaming through the tall windows. Adeline’s gaze darted around, searching for something inconspicuous yet valuable.

Her eyes landed on a small jewellery box on her father’s desk. She opened it to find a collection of rings, each adorned with precious gems.

"Perfect," She whispered.

She pocketed two of the rings, then scanned the room for more items to sell the illusion. She took some unimportant documents, they were just expense reports of their mansion, nothing too important.

And what else... Adeline’s eyes darted to find something hidden in her father’s drawers.

"What is this..." Adeline quickly scanned the document to find that... There was a war! She learnt about the imperial army’s betrayal and how there was an imminent war... Just what was Edward thinking?! What was the Holy Temple thinking?!

What started this... Was this the butterfly effect? How many catastrophes was her meddling responsible for?! Her heart was racing, blood rushed to her head. She felt dizzy and nauseated at the same time.

The Imperial summon that led her father to the Capital... It had to be because of this war... Her father didn’t tell her... Adeline clutched the documents and sank into her father’s chair, her heart racing.

Her mind flitted back to the Imperial summons that had pulled the Marquess away to the capital. At the time, he had dismissed it as routine business, but now she understood the truth. He hadn’t told her because he was protecting her.

Her father had a different perspective. The only reason for this war was the attitude of the Holy Temple, not his young daughter. He would break every finger that would be pointed at her.

Adeline sat in silence for several minutes, her plans for the staged robbery forgotten.

She crumpled the papers in her hand, frustration and guilt welling up inside her. "This is my fault," She muttered, shaking her head. "I meddled where I shouldn’t have, and now—"

The Goddess who usually would give her space and let her process things interfered.

"Come on, now. This isn’t the time for self-pity. This is the time for you to take action. You worked so hard till now... Building connections, exposing crimes and you put your life in danger to get into the ruins! You are now rewarded with powers. Time to make use of them."

The Goddess spoke with pride. She was indeed proud of how far the child she stalked had come. If there’s anything she admired about her, it was her blind determination. The entire world could be telling her that she sucked but she would keep on going!

The Goddess immediately stopped in her tracks, I wanted to praise her, but why does it sound like an insult?
