Chapter 136: Sneaking Out

Chapter 136: Sneaking Out

"Answer the question, brother. How did you find out?" She pouted and put her hands on her waist. She needed to know how so she could be even more careful next time.

Alaric didn’t think too much and told her how he found out. They were looking for their lady! A five-year-old child was hiding a map and a get away bag for who knows what purposes.

Traitors! All of them! She couldn’t believe that her maids snitched on her! To think she trusted them huhuhu. The horror! The betrayal. She was pouty for the rest of the day, her plan was ruined!

Now her brother knew everything! What was she supposed to do now? He didn’t even hide it, he told her straight to her face that he was increasing the security and she should forget any scheme that came to her mind.

She spent time with her brother and went to bed. After a busy day, she came to a conclusion. She had to be extra sneaky to get away from the mansion! She was going to those ruins no matter what!

Adeline was deep in a dreamless sleep, her body exhausted from days of planning her escape and fending off her nosy brother. She had barely closed her eyes when an ear-splitting voice tore through the silence.

"Get up!" the Goddess shouted, her voice echoing like a thunderclap in Adeline’s head.

Adeline jolted upright, her heart racing. "What the—" She started, her voice slurred with sleep. She blinked groggily, her surroundings blurring into focus. "Are you serious right now? It’s the middle of the night!"

The Goddess’s ethereal voice played over her, radiating smug energy. "First of all, good morning," She said, from her tone, it was clear that she did not give a crap about Adeline’s sleep. "It’s 5 AM. Get up! We leave in 10 minutes."

Adeline gawked at her. "We? We? You don’t have to do anything. You’re just going to watch from your comfortable cloud throne while I do all the work!"

The Goddess ignored her complaint, pointing to the satchel on the floor. "No time to waste, ruins await us. Don’t back out now. Chop-chop! And also! I do not have a cloud throne!" She a throne made of gold! Have your facts straight before attempting to insult her!

I will ruin you, you pesky, annoying goddess! Adeline muttered under her breath.

"What was that?!" The Goddess immediately asked.

"Nothing." Adeline rolled her eyes. This Goddess has selective hearing, it is so annoying!

Adeline groaned, flopping back onto the bed. "Why couldn’t you have woken me up at a decent hour?"

"Because the ruins aren’t going to wait for you to have your beauty sleep," The Goddess snapped. "Now get ready!"

Grumbling under her breath, Adeline rolled out of bed. She dressed quickly, choosing sturdy clothes that would hold up against the rough terrain. The Goddess hovered nearby, practically buzzing with impatience.

"Be quiet," Adeline hissed as she slipped her boots on. "If my brothers catch me sneaking out..."

"Relax," the Goddess interrupted. "I’ve taken care of it." After which came an evil laugh that made Adeline stop in her tracks.

Did she kill someone?!

Adeline paused, mid-lace. "What do you mean you took care of it?" She asked with narrowed eyes.

"No, I didn’t kill anyone," The Goddess said, exasperated. "I just... Put them in a temporary slumber. Don’t look at me like that! It’s harmless."

Adeline frowned but decided to believe her for now. She grabbed her satchel, which was already packed with supplies, and crept downstairs.

True to the Goddess’s word, the mansion was eerily silent. Not even the guards patrolling the halls stirred as she passed. She decided to take a quick look at her brothers. Just to make sure... What? She trusted the Goddes! But she wanted to make sure...

Alaric looked so peaceful. This would be a much-deserved rest, as the work he has to do increased since his father’s absence.

She passed by Aaron’s bed. He was... Sleeping in such an awkward position that she couldn’t help but laugh! He was so close to falling and hitting the ground, half of his body was not even on the bed.

Ever since she came back, she spent less time with Aaron. She missed him. Did he choose those friends over her? His own sister?! How dare he? She would not stand for this. He has only one best friend and that’s her!

Come back to your dear sister! Why would you choose those friends over me?! I’m your built-in best friend!

After saying her goodbyes to her brothers, she was prepared to leave for the ruins. She snuck a few snacks and pastries before she left though... Because... You know what, forget it. Why does she have to give excuses?

It’s 5 A.M and she deserves to have yummy sweets!

Adeline complained as she sneaked into the stables. Aside from the times she got him into trouble or bullied him, she really was Aaron’s favourite person.

Her footsteps were soft against the cobblestone. The horses nickered softly as she approached. She chose her trusty horse and saddled up.

"Do you even know how to ride?" The Goddess asked, watching her with faint amusement.

Adeline shot her a glare. "What do you take me for? Of course, I know how to ride."

The Goddess smirked. "Good. That would’ve been awkward."

Adeline rolled her eyes and swung herself into the saddle. With a gentle nudge, she guided the horse out of the stable and onto the dirt road leading away from the mansion. The sky was still dark, the sun wasn’t up yet.

The cool wind whipped through her hair as the horse picked up speed, and Adeline couldn’t help but feel excited. The grogginess from earlier faded away, replaced by a thrill of anticipation.

"So," she said, her voice cutting through the quiet. "Where exactly are we going?"

The Goddess’s grin was audible in her reply. "To the Mage Tower."

Adeline’s reins tightened instinctively, the horse slowing to a trot. "The Mage Tower?" She repeated, her voice rising. "You mean the place crawling with mages who could turn me into a pile of ash with a flick of their fingers?"

She took a deep breath and continued with a louder voice, "You mean the place that is surrounded by dense forests populated by monsters?!"

"Relax," the Goddess said, her tone breezy. "It’s abandoned."

??

Seeing her face all scrunched up and annoyed, the Goddess laughed. This child was so amusing truly. She wiped the tears she got from laughing so much and explained, "The ruins are not in the Mage Tower... They’re just near it hehe."

Was this an appropriate time to laugh? No. It only made Adeline even angrier! If she knew that she had to go towards the Mage Towers she would’ve called it quits a long time ago!

She was baited! She was betrayed! She was bamboozled!

She can’t survive in that forest! All she had was useless holy powers! And everyone knows how that went... Even if she attacked someone... Or something, they would just heal themselves!

Adeline turned around and prepared to leave when the Goddess started to yell again.

"No!!!!!!!!! Waiiittttttt! Don’t go!"
