Chapter 124: Go To The Holy Temple

Adeline drew in a quick breath, the Duchess was incredibly perceptive. She nodded slowly, "You are right. I am trying to make allies because my powers are infinite. I can do anything with them... And the thing that is on top of my list... Is to bring the Holy Temple to the ground."

The Duchess raised her head. There was a spark in her eyes. This child... She really liked her! She liked her fire, she liked her thinking. She liked her courage. It wasn’t often that someone as young as Adeline possessed such bold conviction.

The Duchess tapped her fingers lightly against the armrest of her chair, intrigued by Adeline’s declaration. Just what scheme is this child cooking up?

"And, how do you plan to do that?" The Duchess kind of knew the answer. She said so herself. Her powers were infinite. She could make the Holy Temple obsolete. But how did she plan to do that...

It isn’t favourable in the long run, but she still decided to give Adeline a chance to explain herself.

"I will make sure everyone has access to my healing powers, the temple is only in power as long as they control the holy power, but they will never control me." She said with confidence.

The Duchess frowned for a second, but she quickly recovered. A thought crossed her mind, but it wouldn’t be right to discuss that with a child. She didn’t want to dampen Adeline’s enthusiasm either.

Adeline quickly summoned a butterfly, she created a spoon with holy power and casually dropped it in the cup of coffee the Duchess was holding.

I shouldn’t have let her off this easily! She clearly needs more etiquette lessons!

The Duchess was not amused by her holy spoon. She took a sip of the coffee nevertheless and felt refreshed. Her annoyance with Adeline’s move reduced significantly. She should probably make Adeline produce a bunch of these spoons before she left.

It would come in a pinch when she had to go through lots of documents.

"So this is how you plan to bring them to the ground?" A holy spoon wasn’t exactly a solution to years of corruption.

Adeline pouted, was she underestimated her?!

Seeing her pouty face the Duchess stopped teasing her. She knew the extent of Adeline’s power. She experienced it personally, of course, she knew!

But there were many things to think about. She was overestimating herself, the Duchess was clear about her thoughts. She watched Adeline leave with an incredible amount of confidence.

The Duchess had several concerns, one, the Holy Temple being an exclusive entity did not disrupt the world too much. The population was in control... As much as it was grim to say.

The exclusivity of the Holy Temple’s powers, while morally questionable, served an unspoken role in maintaining societal balance. She saw it as a mechanism that controlled not just the distribution of healing but also the broader flow of life and death.

Without easy access to holy powers that can heal someone instantly, there was no overpopulation. It followed closely to fate... People would die when their time came... One could argue that doctors should be stopped too.

In life-or-death situations, doctors can’t guarantee life, but holy power can. And what would happen if it snowballs out of control?

If every ailment, injury, or fatal condition could be healed instantly, the Duchess feared that society would soon face chaos. It wasn’t that she found comfort in suffering or death, but she recognised the delicate balance they maintained in the cycle of life.

The Duchess was always a practical one, she didn’t care about sentiments. She cared about the consequences more than anything. Adeline could very well disrupt the natural order of things with her thinking.

Overpopulation wasn’t her only concern. It was about what this power could mean for society as a whole. In a world where death could be indefinitely postponed, would people still value life as they do now?

She didn’t tell of this to Adeline, she couldn’t lay such heavy information onto her. The child would definitely argue saying that if she had the strength to save people she should use it! And she couldn’t fault her for thinking like that.

It was a noble thought, but the balance of the world is more important.

When she saw Adeline and Dimitri off, she pulled Adeline aside and only told her one sentence, "Hide your powers, now is not the time to reveal it."

Adeline was conflicted. She did all this preparation so that she didn’t have to hide it anymore. She wanted to use it to help people but what help could she do by keeping it hidden?

She carefully considered the Duchess’s words too. She wouldn’t have said that if it was not important. Should she trust the Duchess and do what she says? Or should she go ahead with the original plan?

Dimitri saw her worried face and assumed that it was because they left earlier than they should have. Adeline did not hide her dissatisfaction about their early departure at all, so he chalked her worries up to that and let her calm down a little.

They were near the teleportation circle when the Goddess spoke, "Adeline! Stop!"

Adeline almost slipped as she got down the carriage. She wanted to stretch her legs when the Goddess interrupted.

’What?!’ She yelled in her mind. Could she not even dismount in peace?

"Don’t go back to the West yet. Go to the Holy Temple." The Goddess spoke with much enthusiasm.

Adeline blinked in disbelief, her grip tightening on the edge of the carriage door. She couldn’t have heard that correctly.

"..." Was the Goddess crazy? Or did the mighty Goddess think that she was out of her mind? Why would she willingly set foot in that place?!

A nervous chuckle echoed through her thoughts. "I can feel you cursing me," The Goddess said sheepishly.

’Good, you can still take a hint.’ Adeline smiled coldly at the Goddess. She was tired of these random missions. It was always "do this" or "go there," and now this? Marching right into the belly of the beast?!

"Hear me out! The water source for the Capital is polluted. No matter how many people you cure, it will come back. You need to cut off the source of the plague!" The Goddess urged.

Adeline didn’t know what happened but the Goddess did. She was a Goddess in name but in reality, she had very limited powers. The only person she could talk to was Adeline. Sometimes, she couldn’t even do that!

Her powers were running low. There were only a few things she could do, and only a few times her voice would go through. She wanted to drop all the information she could without being interrupted.

Who knows how much time she had left?!

Adeline paused. Her annoyance was still there, but the words made her hesitate.

Should I go there? It’s not like she is asking me to go to the Holy Temple itself...

Dimitri looked at her with curiosity. Would it be right to drag him into another mission of hers? She pursed her lips.

"Say, do you wanna go to the Holy Temple?" She smiled showing all of her teeth.
