The Last King Of Darkness -
Chapter 709 - 407: The Beginning of the Downfall
Chapter 709: Chapter 407: The Beginning of the Downfall
Horus readily agreed.
The establishment of the West Front was mainly to guard against the monsters from the Soul Devouring King Castle.
Now that the Soul Devouring King’s castle had been cleared out, the pressure on the West Front had drastically diminished, the threat of the Core Legion’s flank had disappeared, and the demand for combat power was no longer so pressing.
Horus only left behind seven Second-Level Combatants, along with Jon’s Spear Battle Group, the original Lily Leaf Battle Group of Lily, and Rod’s Black Battle Group; all other personnel were sent to support Storm Pass.
Rod returned to the Royal City.
The Judgment Chief of the Internal Affairs Court, Lucian, welcomed Rod’s arrival very warmly.
Although the Judgers responsible for maintaining internal order and dealing with internal human disputes were very powerful, they were generally not of a High-Rank Combatant’s level.
Humanity’s strongest forces were usually deployed externally rather than internally.
Within the Internal Affairs Court, the only High-Rank Combatant was Lucian himself.
Capturing Doomsday believers was not about force, but intelligence.
Only when facing the most troublesome enemies would Lucian personally join the battle.
As a general rule, whenever Lucian took the field, it was usually with an overwhelming advantage; Doomsday believers had difficulty in cultivating, scarce resources, and unless they were sleeper agents hidden within humanity, it was unlikely they would possess much strength.
But this operation was different, their targets being the last lifeforce of the Polluter Sect—the Great Sect Leader Asa, six Doomsday Bishops, and several Doomsday believers.
Their strength was not weak, and they possessed Demi Divine Artifacts such as the Book of Destiny.
Although Lucian was not afraid, they had hidden deep within the sewers.
The Royal City Sewer had always been a place of danger, and its depths were even more perilous. Disturbing the monsters lying dormant below could have unimaginable consequences.
Moreover, Lucian was aware of the unknown spaces beneath the Royal City.
Therefore, this pursuit mission had been fraught with difficulties from the very beginning.
Had it not been for the ongoing pressure from several Guardians within the city and the subsequent involvement of the White Tower, they would have given up long ago.
But now the situation had changed; as soon as the news of Guardian Lily’s death reached him, Lucian knew he had made a grave mistake.
These remnants of humanity must die.
Fortunately, the White Tower had already completely pinpointed their location, and the Great Prophet Iyeta had personally joined the hunting party, ensuring that the target would not be lost and would not be affected by the Book of Destiny.
The only problem was the extreme danger deep in the sewers; two High-Rank Combatants might not be enough to suppress it.
This is where Rod’s arrival was perfect.
——
Lower City District.
Hammer Street.
Rod met with Lucian and Iyeta inside a large house.
The atmosphere in the room was heavy, with Lucian’s expression dark and Iyeta’s face stiff.
A sewer map about the height of a person was piled on the table, with countless lines intertwined like twine, dizzying to the eye.
Lucian nodded slightly at Rod, managing to squeeze out a bit of a smile.
"Good evening, Lord Rod, may the light of the fire illuminate your path forever."
Rod bowed slightly, "Good evening, Judgment Chief, may justice gather around your light like moths to a flame and may evil scatter as beasts flee a burning forest."
There was a slight twitch on Iyeta’s rigid face, as if he was trying to smile.
"Rod, you have grown a lot."
His words clearly referred to more than just Spiritual Energy growth. Rod was slightly surprised and asked, "Lord Iyeta, haven’t we only met a few times?"
Iyeta tilted his head slightly, the light shining briefly in Rod’s eyes from his polished forehead.
"You have only seen me three times, but I have seen you since the moment you entered Jinworth Academy."
A chill went through Rod’s heart, and he realized many things in an instant.
He had entered the sight of the Royal City’s upper echelons earlier than he had imagined.
If this had been before, he might have felt some fear and panic, but now, there was only calmness and composure in his heart.
"I am grateful for your care."
He bowed again.
"I hope I have not disappointed you."
Iyeta pulled at his face, "Lord Rod, you will never disappoint anyone. In this operation, we will eradicate the Doomsday believers and retrieve the Book of Destiny. The teacher has already foreseen it. The last piece of the puzzle required by the Source Prophecy, the Soul Core related to fate, is linked to the Book of Destiny."
Lucian said in a hoarse voice, "That’s why this operation is more important than any before. It will not only completely extirpate this cancer of humanity but also clear the mist of human fate, guiding us towards our future direction."
Rod nodded; these maggots should have died long ago. Contributing something to humanity before their death was the least they could do.
"Where exactly are they? How shall we carry out the hunt?"
Lucian pulled out a worn piece of paper from the stack.
"Here, Asa and his disciples are hidden in a cave about three thousand yards deep. They’ve entered the deepest parts of the sewer; it’s no longer the Royal City Sewer in the conventional sense."
Lucian pointed to the edge of the map where it was written in Giant’s script, and Rod recognized that those few words meant "Omir."
"Trolian Royal City was originally founded by the Giant King Omir from the Second Epoch. The sewage system built by the Giant Clan is extremely vast. The arrogant giant artisans displayed their skills to the fullest, unaware that the silver-clad other folk were digging deeper tunnels right beneath their eyes."
"The depth of this tunnel is now unverifiable, and it’s also unknown where it leads, and why they built such a tunnel. The other folk had vanished before the great catastrophe of the Second Epoch, and the truth of the matter has long been buried in history."
