Chapter 696: Chapter 402 Disaster of Evil (Part 2)_3
Jon reacted too slowly and heard only two hissing noises as the tentacles were repelled by the air.
Hall clenched his fists; Spiritual Energy shimmered all over his body.
"Seal of the Sky," he said softly. "One-Way Passage."
Boom!
Jon’s body erupted into flames as he soared into battle with the monster.
This was an enormous flea-like creature, with a massive abdomen and dozens of tube-like tentacles. Although its Spiritual Power Wave was incredibly strong, it was still suppressed by Jon’s power.
Lily flicked her fingers, sending a stream of Chaos Fire onto the creature.
Even though it was just a spark, the creature suddenly went berserk, charging wildly; Jon firmly withstood its assault, while Hall opened the Seal of the Sky, a power capable of changing space, sealing off the "passage" attribute within it and thus denying material penetration.
Given his current Characteristic tier and Spiritual Power Strength, he could maintain something the size of a wall.
The monster could neither break through Jon nor destroy the Seal of the Sky. The Chaos Fire, like a festering wound, burned deeper and deeper until it reached a certain limit and then exploded, instantly turning the monster to ashes.
Jon flew back down.
"This is a Soul Devouring Demon," he said. "Like the Thirsty Soul Demon, it was born under the influence of the Soul Devouring King."
Hall remarked, "There’s something wrong with its Soul Strength."
"Curse,"
uttered Misole suddenly.
"I smell the scent of a curse, rising like the sea level."
The next instant, Rod felt a heaviness upon him, as if carrying a large bag of ice water, but the sensation quickly dissipated.
"It’s the Soul Devouring King’s curse!"
Jon stated without much fluctuation in his voice.
"The Starry Seal is nearly ineffective, Misole, remove the curse."
Misole extended his hands, Spiritual Light flashing at his fingertips.
"Eh? Rod, where’s your curse?"
Rod said, "Purified."
Surprised, Misole exclaimed, "Your soul also has curse counteracting capabilities?"
Turning to the others, he lightly touched their Souls, and the curse was lifted.
Jon said, "The situation is not good; we need to act quickly. This way."
Outside the church was a hall, seemingly part of a larger structure, with a massive door at the end.
"The Sealing Land is right behind the door," Jon confirmed.
Rod, feeling elated, reached out to push the door, but to his surprise, it was immensely heavy and he could not budge it.
Jon said gravely, "Not enough Spiritual Energy; we’ll take another route."
Misole asked softly, "Isn’t there another way?"
Jon shook his head, "No, the Sealing Gate is moved by Spirit, and Absolute Spiritual Power is the only force that can do so. Temporary Enhancement and outbursts are useless. Judging by the size of this door, it requires a Spiritual Power Strength of over twenty thousand on the scale. Lily and I might not even be able to push it, let alone withstand such powerful corrosion."
Hall asked, "Can we break it?"
Jon shook his head, "Of course not. The Star bricks specially treated for this purpose are extremely hard to destroy. Moreover, this is part of the Sealing, and brute force might lead to even more unpredictable outcomes."
The group had no choice but to walk in another direction. With Jon’s extensive experience exploring underground ruins and his familiarity with the architectural style of the Starry Kingdom, as well as the guidance of the white Sealing, they quickly found an alternative path.
After passing through several smaller Sealing Gates, they were once again attacked.
This time it was a Soul Devouring Demon and a Thirsty Soul Demon.
For this team, they weren’t particularly challenging to handle, but in such thick Black Fog, everyone’s power was suppressed while the monsters grew significantly stronger.
Moreover, the Soul Devouring King’s curse was periodically released.
Despite Misole’s rapid Purification, it still had a large negative impact on their combat strength.
After eliminating the third wave of monsters, they came upon another hall.
At the end of the hall was another giant door, smaller than the last one, but still larger than most.
Jon’s face suddenly darkened: "Bad news, this Sealing Gate requires an Absolute Spiritual Power Strength of at least ten thousand on the scale."
Rod felt a sinking sensation in his heart and upon trying, as expected, the object remained firmly immovable.
At this time, besides Rod, everyone’s Spiritual Energy was already drained by half, and despite Jon’s repeated use of the Silence Bell, the disturbance they caused had inevitably alerted the monsters.
Although Spiritual Vision was blocked and they could not see, their perception was still very clear—many monsters within this underground complex were rushing towards them.
Jon glanced at the distance and said, "We can’t go around again."
Rod was about to ask why when Jon placed his hands on the large door. Spiritual Light flickered as he pushed the door open with his powerful Spirit accompanied by Spiritual Energy. However, an intense Pollution instantly spread within Jon’s soul. His hands had turned dead black and were quickly spreading throughout his body.
Boom!
In just a few seconds, Jon had pushed the door open, but he fell to the ground, his body blackened, with his soul seriously polluted.
"You can go now,"
said Jon, his tone still calm.
"Hall will take my place in the battle to come. Remember, as long as you give Lily enough time, she can burn even a god to ashes."
"Rod, I’m entrusting the Sealing to you. If you’re uncertain of the direction, use it. It has a faint response to the Starry Seal and can guide the way. After this, there should be no more grand Sealing Gates like this one,"
Jon told him, causing a slight tremor in Rod’s heart. "What about you? What will you do?" Rod asked.
Jon replied, "Don’t worry, I will return to the Guardian Fire that resonates with me. The Royal City will do everything possible to preserve my life."
Before his words had even finished echoing, he transformed into a blaze of fire that shot through the sky.
The flames bore large swaths of black, as if polluted.
"Let’s go," Lily said softly. "We’re nearly there. I can feel that deep, chilling, and terrifying malice pulsating beneath the ground, but Theodore will protect us. I have prayed to him."
After saying this, she made another prayer gesture.
"We will achieve Victory. Humanity is invincible."
Rod’s mind was in turmoil. With Jon gone, the team had grown considerably weaker, and the panic that had been suppressed in his heart suddenly surged up.
Yet, Rod’s face showed no expression, and he spoke calmly, "This way."
He took Jon’s place and began leading the team forward. He didn’t have Jon’s extensive experience, knowledge about the relics, or understanding of the Starry Kingdom, but he had the Book of Knowledge.
This kind of knowledge-based problem was exactly what the Book of Knowledge was good for. It could get answers at a lower cost, and some things it already knew.
Thus, guided by the deductions of the Book of Knowledge and the white Runes, the team got back on track.
But the trouble was, they encountered more and more attacks. The Soul Devouring Demons continued to surge towards them from all directions.
Only after Jon left did Rod realize how troublesome these monsters were. They moved as swiftly as lizards, attacked unpredictably, and whether it was the stabbing of their tongues or the whipping of their tails, their Strength was formidable.
Without using Spiritualization, Rod’s Spiritual Defense wouldn’t hold up.
Hall had to join him in the front lines to hold off the monsters.
Lily’s Chaos Fire remained the main offensive force. The monsters, once even slightly touched by it, were inevitably left with only one outcome.
Although it was regrettable not to harvest those souls, completing the mission was of utmost importance.
After brief coordination, the team managed to function smoothly again. The Soul Devouring Demons fell one after another, and they continued forward without encountering any more grand Sealing Gates.
Misole whispered, "I feel we are getting close. The curse of the Soul Devouring King is getting more frequent."
With a hoarse voice, Hall said, "I didn’t expect our coordination to be this good. Brother Rod, I underestimated you."
"It’s all thanks to the protection of Theodore,"
Lily said again with that strange smile.
"You must not forget Theodore."
Rod glanced at her, "Of course not. No one will forget him."
"I knew it," Lily said with delight. "I will pray to Theodore for you. He will grant us strength and wisdom and resolve all difficulties."
She made another prayer gesture, and Rod pushed down the unease within him, turning his head away.
But in the next second, he sharply turned back. The gesture of Lily’s prayer—wasn’t that the 51?
A chill instantly filled his body. Rod suddenly remembered that her gesture during every prayer had been the same.
Lily looked at Rod, her face now completely disfigured by decay, yet she wore a smile, asking just as before.
"What is it, little Rod?"
