The Last King Of Darkness -
Chapter 67 - 56: Must Kill Him
Chapter 67: Chapter 56: Must Kill Him
The Book of Knowledge had once again answered his question.
Indeed, the golden color on the right side of the Obelisk represented divinity.
"Golden divinity originates from the ordered state of the Source, enhancing the likelihood of inheriting the fire of civilization, pulling up civilizations that slide towards the Dark Abyss and increasing your divinity."
After reading this lengthy passage, Rod felt a chill run through him.
Such a colossal proposition was clearly not something he could achieve in the short term.
"First give me an endless supply of divinity, and I might consider it. But giving me just this tiny bit, that’s tough."
Rod looked at the thin layer of golden light at the base of the Obelisk, where the feedback information displayed:
Divinity: 55.
Only 5 parts.
But initially, the golden light was much more than just that, at least around 300 to 400. Rod had faced life-and-death crises twice in his dreams, and both times he had relied on the golden light to kill his enemies, which had consumed so much.
"No wonder."
Rod thought.
"Being so powerful, divinity isn’t that easy to obtain."
Rod lifted his head from the surface of the Obelisk and didn’t feel particularly disappointed.
While divinity was rare, fortunately, it did not consume much; five parts of divinity were enough to make five pieces of Soul Firewood.
At least for a while, he wouldn’t need to worry about power issues.
Afterward, Rod sought to understand from the Book of Knowledge the function of the black altar.
It was originally called the Soul Altar. Besides providing the Eye of the Soul and preserving the soul, its primary function was for sacrifice.
Though named sacrifice, to Rod it looked more like dissection.
When he sacrificed a soul on the Soul Altar, its soul body part was absorbed by the Obelisk and stored within it.
The spiritual body part separated out and condensed into spirituality.
Rod tried out the sacrificing effect with a few specks of soul that remained.
The speck-like points of light at his fingertip were distorted by an unexplained force, decomposed, and disappeared, leaving behind a tiny gleaming bit of spirituality.
At the same time, the Obelisk displayed another line of text:
Soul Without Spirit: 7.
Rod instantly understood.
So that’s what "Inject: Soul Without Spirit" in "Frost Blue" meant.
All he had to do was use the soul body part as firewood for burning, while the spiritual body part had another use.
Previously, throwing it all in was obviously a loss.
"Alright, from now on, remember to sacrifice first."
Spirituality material is also very important.
Rod glanced at the stock he still had left.
small soul pieces.
large soul piece.
"Mad Sinner’s Souls."
"Evil Black Crow’s Soul."
Among them, the "Evil Black Crow’s Soul" was very important.
When the black crow died, it dropped a piece of soul ash, which was picked up by Karamon.
If he could get that piece of ash, he could create the "Soul Ashes of the Evil Black Crow."
That monster had left a profound impact on him; it took him and Reslin three formidable efforts to defeat it.
If he could manufacture it, whether for use on the battlefield or for resisting invasions in dreams, it would be very useful.
Moreover, it was also considered a "Medium Complete Soul" used for making Soul Firewood.
"Mad Sinner’s Souls" were weak and didn’t qualify.
With only one "Evil Black Crow’s Soul," how to make the choice, Rod hadn’t decided yet, so he sacrificed the small soul pieces and the large soul piece first.
A small soul piece could approximately decompose into 15-30 Souls Without Spirit.
A large piece could decompose into between 60-70.
A speck-like soul had only 2-3, about a thirtyfold difference.
Such weakness, no wonder Grey Level creatures were called battlefield dust.
A soul fragment of an Ungraded creature was thirty times stronger than it.
"Mad Sinner’s Souls" were temporarily kept, to see if they had any other use.
After the sacrifice, Rod totalled 241 Souls Without Spirit and a small pile of spirituality the size of a fingernail.
It was like a clear jelly, slowly writhing on the nail, where a large clump was clearly clustered together, distinct from a small clump alongside it.
This was probably what one part meant.
Looking at it, Rod pondered.
The Book of Knowledge told me that only people possess a large amount of alive spirituality, so does this mean it’s dead?
No, that’s not right; it should be understood as normal spirituality and alive spirituality.
Just like a normal table and an alive table.
"So what is the use of alive spirituality?"
"It can create resentful spirits, ghosts, puppets, used for brainwashing, mental control, or rituals related to the Spirit Realm."
How sinister... I probably won’t need it for now, perhaps that Black Priest’s Desecration Ceremony would use this.
Afterward, following the suggestion of the Book of Knowledge, Rod stored the spirituality in a cupboard under the Stone Platform.
This was the material most susceptible to contamination and spoilage and must be preserved well, or it could cause unknown disasters.
FInally, Rod turned his gaze to the back of the Obelisk—where the invading text appeared.
When he touched the surface of the monument with his forehead, he saw more detailed text:
After twenty-three sunsets, the invasion will come.
Warning: About to cross the River of Eternal Death, the invasion will cause unknown changes.
Possible invaders: Eternal Death Spirit, Nightmare, Soul Binder, Red Spirits from the River of Death.
Possible invasion environment: Nightmare Night.
Escape from invasion: No.
Threat of invasion: Death is certain.
——
The flashing red words "Must Die" calmed Rod down considerably, as he was far from the point where he could afford to be carried away with pride.
If he did not redouble his efforts now and prepare for the invasion twenty-three days later, it would be too late to regret it when death approached.
This time, there would be no golden light to save him.
Rod reviewed all the information he had gained today and made a preliminary arrangement:
First, he was not the murderer, the murderer being the fragment-seeking Doomsday Sect; he could fully and boldly assist the investigation of the Internal Affairs Court.
Of course, certain information not suitable to be disclosed could be independently investigated by him.
Second, the Dream Realm could be accessed by finding fragments, which would grant more buildings and functions. Near the fragments, he would sense a calling, but must be wary of Doomsday believers who were also searching for the fragments.
Third, igniting a new Soul Star required a special soul, spirituality, and firewood, the key being the "special soul."
Fourth, enhancing the position of the stars required adding Soul Firewood while the stars were in a state of limit burning. Gathering the materials for the Soul Firewood was his current top priority.
Fifth, obtain more humanity as soon as possible.
Sixth, create items like Sealing Spirit Bullets, Soul Ashes, and Guardians of Darkness as much as possible, for these were his life-saving trump cards.
To achieve these six goals, Rod must hunt more monsters to obtain their souls and ashes.
This could be accomplished through patrol missions.
At the same time, he had to perform better to earn the First Level "Goldenworth Star" medal, which not only came with ten thousand silver coins and a large amount of resources but essential access rights.
He could consider buying a house outside the academy as a new base, convenient for hiding some matters not suitable for public exposure.
Other materials could be bought with money or credits, and personal distributed supplies could be contended for.
He must also frantically gather as much humanity as possible, for it was the most needed material.
Lastly, there was a wealth of knowledge on the Book of Knowledge; whenever he had free time, he had to return to the Dream Realm to study.
Mastering the Ancient Language more proficiently would increase his learning efficiency.
Of course, all this must be done in a safe environment.
Today’s blunder was absolutely not allowed to happen again.
With his thoughts settled, Rod felt no longer lost. He put the large book back on the shelf, clenched a sign, and returned to the Material World.
The dormitory was silent, with no one else coming to disturb him.
The students were still in classes, and he was supposed to patrol the academy gates in the afternoon, but he had taken the day off and did not need to go.
Rod had barely closed his eyes for two days. He placed his hands on his chest and quickly fell into a dreamless, deep sleep to recover his strength for the challenges ahead.
——
Trolian Royal City.
Upper City.
Internal Affairs Court.
The disappearance of Alex, the governor of the second-largest district of the Outer City District, and her confirmation as a Doomsday believer caused a huge stir; the Judgment Chief Lucian, along with three Chief Judges, rushed back from the Royal District to handle this matter.
The position of the district’s governor was not a low one.
Although one didn’t need to be a Fire Holder to become a governor, this didn’t cover up its importance as an administrative chief for an area with over a million people.
The Royal City was a tremendously large city, and ever since the establishment of the Los High Wall five hundred years ago, it was destined to be an unprecedented human settlement.
The safety afforded by the high wall was incomparable to anything except fire, and even though the Royal City was under strict household registration management, its population inevitably swelled to thirty million.
Including a large number of unregistered residents, it was generally believed that the number of people living in the Royal City long-term was between thirty-five and forty million.
The Outer City District was the most populous area, with each large district having a population of over one million.
The fact that a governor of such a district could be a Doomsday believer sent shivers down everyone’s spine.
If she had intentionally caused damage, the consequences would have been unimaginable.
But more incredible was how she became the governor in the first place?
During further investigation, more unbelievable facts were discovered—
No record of her resume could be found.
The Administration Hall of the block and neighborhood had no traces of her existence.
No one knew how she had risen to her position, yet no one had questioned it, nor were they surprised by her youth; it seemed as natural as breathing.
But when the truth was revealed, it was as if they were awakened from a dream, suddenly perceiving all that was plainly illogical.
The investigation quickly ended, and the three Chief Judges brought all the investigation information to the top of the Tower of Judgment.
Judgment Chief Lucian was standing high on the tower, overlooking the Royal City.
His body was as fragile and small as a withered branch, but no one dared to underestimate the power within that body. The three Chief Judges respectfully handed him the investigative report.
But Lucian did not accept it.
"I sensed a power that distorts fate, someone has tampered with a preset life, replacing the original trajectory of the governor."
The three Chief Judges looked at each other, feeling bewildered.
"Chief, sir,"
One of the giant Chief Judges bowed deeply, his forehead nearly touching the ground.
"If the Doomsday believers possess such capabilities, why wouldn’t they choose a higher position?"
Lucian did not answer, still overlooking the enveloping Black Fog below the Royal City.
The numerous tiny lights in the houses below were like dust under the feet of a dark behemoth.
The higher one stands, the more darkness one sees.
This was truly a tragedy.
Lucian sighed faintly.
"Find the original governor who lost his life trajectory, from him we will know the answer,"
The three Chief Judges simultaneously responded, "Yes, Chief Lucian!"
——
Outer City District.
A dark corner of the sewer.
Four individuals in black robes gathered together.
"I’ve been exposed,"
a low female voice said, betraying an unavoidable weakness, yet not diminishing the hatred and fury squeezed out from between her teeth.
"It must be that bastard! He saw my face! He must have also sabotaged the Desecration Ceremony! The move against the Redstone Village migration team must be because of his failure too! He stole the power that belonged to us! He disrupted the arrival of the god!"
"We must kill him!"
