The Last King Of Darkness
Chapter 60 - 49 The Key

Chapter 60: Chapter 49 The Key

Rod almost jumped up and shot him.

Fortunately, he quickly discovered that although Karamon’s body was half shattered and looked unsightly, it was wrapped in blue waves that clung to the wounds, maintaining his vitality as much as possible.

Moreover, under the observation of the Eye of the Soul, his spirit still appeared in a complete human form, though it was very weak and showing signs of disintegration, at this moment, it was still "active."

He should be alive.

Considering how many strange things were in this world, it wasn’t too hard to accept. Rod urgently asked,

"What should I do?"

Karamon’s hand weakly pointed towards his waist.

Rod immediately took out a small bottle from his waist, swirling inside was a yellow-orange liquid that looked like something akin to orange juice with pulp.

"Drink?" Rod ventured.

Karamon nodded very lightly.

Rod poured the pulp-like orange liquid into his mouth. The moment the liquid came out, it emitted a shining aura, and upon entering, it rapidly evaporated, disappearing in the blink of an eye as if it had entered the spirit.

The act of drinking seemed like a mere ritual.

After finishing the bottle, Rod hurriedly asked, "Is that enough?"

Karamon didn’t answer; he closed his eyes, his complexion as pale as paper, and he was not breathing, but Rod could clearly see that his spirit had temporarily stabilized and was no longer disintegrating.

He should have survived.

Rod stood up and looked towards the open space not far away, where the heart had been placed before.

He had felt something calling to him here since earlier.

He had assumed it was that strange heart, but after the heart was taken away, the sensation grew even stronger, as if it were loudly calling out right next to his ear.

However, Rod had been in a life-and-death crisis earlier and then had to save Karamon, so he had no time to attend to it.

Only now did he have the chance to look over and discover a strange pattern on the ground where the heart had been.

It was two sharp zigzag lines, intertwining above and below, resembling two streaks of lightning passing by each other.

The Lightning Symbol!

Rod’s eyes widened in an instant.

Wasn’t this the Lightning Symbol?

Exactly the same as what he saw when the migration team perished!

Rod’s heart pounded fiercely. He looked around and immediately noticed the black stones placed around.

The arrangement they formed was no different from what he had seen before!

The only difference was that red stones were used then, and now black stones were used.

What is going on here?

Why is the Lightning Symbol here?

And why is it calling me?

Rod’s heartbeat raced, his surging blood pounding against his eardrums.

He felt like he was very close to the truth of the matter. Maybe, he would soon be able to unravel the mystery of the migration team’s demise.

Just missing a key.

Suddenly, an idea flashed through Rod’s mind.

If I step into it now, what would happen?

Could I find the key?

Faint voices came from afar and a blinding light illuminated the sewer, rapidly approaching this location.

Clearly, the Royal City’s defence forces had detected the anomaly, and real reinforcements had arrived.

There was no time to hesitate. Just like before, Rod stepped directly into the pattern with both feet.

The next instant, his body heated up as if something scorching had been thrust into him.

Then everything went dark before his eyes, and countless images rushed towards him.

In the dark sewer, four individuals clad in black priestly robes gathered together.

They jointly raised their hands, a massive heart cradled within their grasp.

They dissected a corpse, using the darkened blood to draw patterns, arranging black stones into a larger ritual layout.

Piercing roars echoed through the darkness, as if monsters were approaching.

The vision dissipated, the strange sensation faded, and Rod came back to his senses. The pattern beneath his feet swiftly evaporated, turning into fine black dust that scattered in all directions.

All this was exactly the same as what had happened before.

A thought struck Rod, and he looked down.

Sure enough, a new symbol had appeared on the back of his hand.

It was a heptadecagon, enclosed by a circle, with a cross in the middle.

What is this?

Rod was suddenly startled, the tangled mysteries in his mind seeming to unravel as a thread was pulled, opening up a part of it.

A door to the unknown was pushed open, and a deluge of new information and possibilities rushed at him.

But he had no time to think now, he only wanted to get as far away from here as possible.

Picking up Karamon, Rod dashed towards the light, with a faint humming sound trailing him. The sewer shook as if some unknown monster had been disturbed.

Five people dressed in Guardian uniforms ran towards him, the great bright light emanating from the lanterns at their waists.

Rod shouted, "Quick, save him! He’s badly injured!"

One of the Guardians rushed up to take Karamon, while another took out a red stone and held it in front of him, flashing a red light.

"No signs of infection."

He placed the red stone in front of Karamon, and the red light flashed again.

In that instant, Rod clearly saw a dark entity deep within Karamon’s soul. The red light vanished in a blink, and Karamon’s soul appeared normal again.

"Suspicious infection signs detected, immediately transfer to the Soul Church."

The Guardian holding Karamon leaped into the air and left in the opposite direction.

Another Guardian grabbed Rod’s arm and jumped into a manhole on the sewer ceiling, quickly leaving the place.

When Rod once again surfaced, the open space made him breathe a long sigh of relief.

The Guardian lifted him, leaped onto a rooftop, and ran across the buildings. The intense light from the lantern at his waist dispelled the black fog overhead. His speed was so fast, like lightning streaking through the clouds.

Whenever they landed between the clouds, Rod could see Guardians standing on the roofs all over the area, emitting a strong light. They were like beacons in the night, inexplicably reassuring.

Soon, Rod asked, "Where are we going?"

The Guardian answered shortly, "The Royal City Military War Department."

Rod vaguely remembered that the Military War Department was a very important institution in the Royal City, with the Defense Department being one of its subordinate organizations.

"Am I going for an interrogation?"

The Guardian looked at him strangely, "To report information, to clarify the situation."

Well, I always consider myself a suspect, although indeed suspicious... Rod collected his thoughts and asked again:

"I have many companions... have you found them?"

The Guardian nodded slightly.

"How are they doing?"

The Guardian replied in a softer tone, "Among the four suspected Doomsday believers, three are dead, one is undergoing resuscitation, but Guardian Levi is performing emergency resuscitation, though he’s run out of Spiritual Energy and his spirit has been damaged, the outlook is not optimistic. Your two companions have been sent to the Healing Cult’s Church medical facility. One is rather lucky, with serious injuries, but possessing strong healing efficacy."

"One is in greater danger. The corrosive toxin has begun to erode his spirit, but the Healing Cult has arranged for central medic Yose Tieji to rush over for an emergency rescue; he should be saved."

Only then Rod’s heart relaxed.

I didn’t expect Aunt Yose to be so strong, to receive special arrangements from the Healing Cult and trust from the Guardians. She must have done her best in my treatment.

It seems my memory really won’t return; the truth has to be pursued by myself.

Hmph, flowing water has no shape, wandering wind leaves no trace, but the truth is always unique! I’m not the murderer, I’m the detective washing machine!

Lost in thought, the Guardian crossed the high wall and reached the Inner City District, stopping in front of a massive castle-like building.
