Chapter 99: Wild (1)

Annalise kept her eyes on the man who should have been escorted out by now. He was too drunk and would eventually annoy the other people here. She didn’t see why after what happened to her, no one had come to escort him.

Was it because she was not dressed as lavish as everyone else? She was still by Rafael’s side so there should be some respect given to her to not have a drunk man grab her and get away with it. Had Rafael not intervened, her right hand would have helped the poor bastard to sober up or kill him. Both options pleased her.

"I apologise. Walk in front of me," Rafael said, taking her hand to lead her away from the drunk man before he tried something else. He remembered the sight of her beating Connor to know that this man had annoyed the wrong woman.

"You do not need to apologise for something you did not do and how can I walk in front of you when I do not know where we are going? Please take us there quickly before someone else tries to grab me," Annalise said, continuing to look left and right for any more drunkards.

Rafael noticed she had not yanked her hand away like always, but did not comment on it for her to realise since he could keep a better watch on her like this.

"Sit down right here," Rafael said, leading her to an empty table. Once they claimed a table, the guards would make sure no one else bothered them so they could spend good money.

Annalise happily sat down so she would be still to watch for threats. "This seems to be a place for the wealthy, so why did they let in someone talking about scamming a baron?" She asked. Everyone else was sitting quietly, enjoying themselves with the drinks coming to their tables, but the man who grabbed her was standing around, almost falling.

"It doesn’t matter where you got your money from. As long as you can afford to buy something, they will let you in. Someone with new money who does not know how to watch how they spend it is a good target for a business like this. They will keep giving him whatever he asks for and then charge him for all that he owns. All of the guards are watching him so he doesn’t piss off anyone not drunk enough to ignore him," Rafael explained.

’Well, he pissed me off,’ Annalise thought. The fool was stupid to state out loud that he took money from a baron.

If he was smart, this would be the last place he entered. When he had to leave this place, he would be too drunk to notice anyone trailing him, so any money he carried with him would be stolen. His touchy fingers might also cost him his life if he grabbed the wrong woman in here. Why was his first instinct to take his money and waste it?

"No one else would trouble you here with me. They are too focused on their drinks and flirting with the workers," said Rafael. He scanned the room for the man he was looking for, but did not find him lingering around.

Annalise folded her arms, watching Rafael look for something. She did not think of him as the type to enjoy something like this since many of the knights she had passed by said he seemed to not be interested in being near women or much of a drinker. They were the two things this place offered.

"I can feel you judging me," Rafael said, turning his attention back to Annalise. "I am not here for whatever you think."

"I did not think anything, young master," Annalise lied. If he secretly enjoyed this kind of thing, that was his business. She would not tell anyone as long as he never brought her here again.

There were plenty of things Annalise wished she could unsee like the man’s head squashed between the large breasts of a woman sitting at the table behind Rafael.

This kingdom had so many rules for how someone should act and liked to judge others, but there were still these places where plenty came to act like animals in heat.

Annalise wanted to laugh at the hypocrites they were. Her people were not the ones who should be called animals.

Rafael watched Annalise bite her lip as she smiled. The sight of what happened within this place would have any lady covering their faces as they ran to get out of there, but she was here trying not to laugh. It was hard to understand her.

"Is it uncomfortable for you to be here? We won’t be here for long. There is someone I need to find," Rafael explained, so she could stop wondering what he did in a place like this. He could pay for a private room for her to sit in while he tried to find Nigel, the man who knew everything that went on in town. For her health, she would need to avoid touching anything in the room.

"No, but a little warning would have been nice. I am not familiar with these places. I have only heard about what goes on in the red-light districts. I still do not know why it is called that. It is good to know that I should never enter here alone," Annalise replied.

Rafael knew that even if she wanted to come inside, they would never allow her unless she could show that she had a lot of money. This was a place for the high class, and the guards only opened the doors because they saw that it was him coming inside. If it was only Annalise trying to get in, they would take one look at her dress and send her away.

The only people who looked like they did not belong and were let inside, were those who had just stumbled upon a lot of money and did not know how to control themselves. They were easy targets to get all of the money they walked in with.

Rafael looked at the idiot who touched Annalise. There were no barons around town or just outside of it. The more he talked about taking money from a baron, the more he was pushing himself to be locked away by the town guards or for the baron he stole from to track him and kill him.

Annalise followed Rafael’s gaze to the man who touched her. "I am confused. You are a knight, and that man speaks of getting money from a baron. Shouldn’t you be holding him to find out what he means, or does your title of a knight go away when you step away like this?"

"Why should I waste my time with a fool?" Rafael replied. Did he look like the man’s father or a town guard? What the fool mumbled about had nothing to do with him. "I deal with war. The town guards deal with idiots like him. His mouth will find him in trouble. He’s practically dead since this baron he speaks of must be using his power to track him down. He is making the baron’s job easy."

"I see," Annalise said. Still, whoever had their money taken from them by this man had to be even more of a fool.
