The Knight's Mysterious Maid
Chapter 100: Wild (2)

Chapter 100: Wild (2)

"Do you think I like to solve every issue? I only meddle with what I am paid to do. That is to keep the kingdom safe from its enemies. The fools in this town could kill each other for all I care. I have more important things to deal with," said Rafael.

"That is surprising. I thought you would love every opportunity to be the hero the town calls you. Now I must stop saying that," Annalise said, making a mental note of it. She always imagined him as the man who had to get in the middle of everything and receive praise. After all, he was the kingdom’s beloved hero.

Rafael recalled her mentioning something about him being a hero, and there was sarcasm in her tone, as if she did not like him. "Have I done something to you, Annalise?" He asked.

"Not exactly, and if you are looking for a man with peculiar orange hair that is fuzzy like mine and wears spectacles, a man with that description saw the back of your head and sprung around," Annalise said, pointing behind Rafael.

"Nigel!" Rafael called, getting out of his seat to catch him. He did not travel here just to waste his time. "Do not make me chase after you."

The man named Nigel stopped before he could reach the doorway leading to the many rooms for the guests to use.

"Rafael! My good friend," Nigel replied, slowly turning to face Rafael. "I have been looking forward to seeing you since you returned. I prayed that you would make it back safe and sound."

"I’ve received letters from the priestess-"

"Whatever she said about me wishing for you to die is a lie. I would never do such a thing," Nigel reassured Rafael. He crossed his heart to show how serious he was. "You know that I like you, right?"

Rafael grabbed the collar of Nigel’s shirt and pulled him close. "It’s hard to tell with you running away from me. Sit down at my table now."

"I would love to. Would you like something to drink? Do you still stick to not drinking? I’m sure they can find you a glass of water or maybe a good drink that suits your taste and won’t get you drunk. Okay, I’m shutting up," Nigel squeaked as Rafael tightened his hold. "I’m going to tell your mother if you do not release me. A-Alright, I will sit with you right now."

Rafael released Nigel and stepped to the side for Nigel to walk by him to the table. It wouldn’t be the first time Nigel would attempt to run away when Rafael was standing right in front of him.

Nigel fixed his clothing. "What is it with you knights and being so aggressive? Just because you are the commander does not mean you can treat me this way. I’m surprised you’ve brought a woman," he said as he approached where Annalise sat. "She’s kind of..." he trailed off, looking at her dress. "Something. Is this your type of woman? Somehow it fits."

Annalise pretended not to have heard his insult since he was Rafael’s guest, but as of right now, she did not like him.

"I’ve been looking for women like her to work here. The men-Fuck!" Nigel touched the back of his head where Rafael smacked him.

"Watch your mouth," Rafael warned. "She is not like the women you employ."

Annalise was surprised to hear that the man sitting before her was the owner of this place. It was somewhat funny that Rafael was hitting him in the place he owned. She wanted Rafael to hit him again for the insult to her looks. This man was not easy on the eyes, so he had no room to talk about the way anyone looked.

"Right right. I apologise," said Nigel. He still could not help but judge the woman Rafael had by his side. There were so many to pick from, and this was what Rafael wanted to walk around with. "I guess if we comb out your hair and put you in a good dress, you would look like something. You are not bad in the face, and you’ve caught the attention of my male customers. Ow!" He winced.

"I have not hit you yet," Rafael said.

"She did," Nigel said, referring to Annalise. What kind of woman was she to cause him so much pain in his foot? Was she one of the few female knights?

"Stop talking about her and you will not find yourself in pain, Nigel. I have been calling for you to visit my manor since I returned, and you have ignored my letters. And you tried to run from me when you saw me not long ago. What is it that you are scared to tell me?" Rafael asked.

"Nothing. I wanted to get you and the little lady a couple of drinks. I was told a woman was grabbed by a drunk man when she was already here with a man, so I came to offer a free drink. I can’t have people say they are getting harassed here. Before you ask me questions, who is this?" Nigel asked, still curious about Annalise.

She kept receiving looks from the men in the room because she was with Rafael, and that would have some men wanting to be with her. Then there were her looks. If she wanted to make a lot of money, she should ditch Rafael and work for him.

"Nigel, I have not come here to tell you about my maid. I need you to tell me who it is that is giving the people information about the war at the border. Information that should not be told to the people. It has to be a knight, and if anyone knows who it is, it is you. You hear a lot of things from the people who come in here, get drunk, and reveal their secrets. Do not lie to me and say that you don’t know what I am talking about. I have already heard your name brought up," Rafael said.

The palace liked to send out little to no information about the wars to not get people worried. As of right now, there was no side that was winning at the border, but someone was starting to spread lies that the people from the border were taking over towns all around the kingdom, and soon there would be panic.

Rafael knew it had to be a few of his knights. The knight he found laying outside of this study was one of them, and if he had to bet, he would say Connor was getting the people to worry to create a mess Rafael needed to clean up before it pissed off the palace. Still, he needed to be sure that it was Connor and not anyone else.

Annalise had to contain her joy and not smile because they were finally talking about the border. Now that she knew the news about the border was discussed at places like this, it was time for Thomas to become a regular.

"I really don’t know since I have not been sitting around listening to the customers talk, but I can ask my workers. They normally come and tell me all the good stuff. No one here really cares about the border. We’re so far away from it, and those barbarians are no match for our kingdom. Now, if you and the little wild lady here could leave-"

"Do not call me wild," Annalise said, angered by how he described her. She hated the words wild and barbarians. It was always used by the people on this side of the kingdom to describe her people and make them sound like animals.
