Chapter 92: Suspicious (3)

Chapter 92: Suspicious (3)

"Rafael! Come inside," Beatrice said, grabbing his hand to pull him inside the room. She didn’t care to question why he was here. All that mattered was that her son came to see her. "River, our son is here."

Annalise wondered if she should stay outside to not disrupt the family reunion. There was really no need for her to go inside, right? If Rafael needed her, he would say something. She stood by the opened door so she could see when Rafael might be looking for her.

"We were just thinking about you and then you appeared. How did you know we wanted to see you now? Did you eat already? I hope you are not still training and not getting much rest. You-"

"Beatrice," River called to his wife so she could give Rafael a break. "Let the boy have a seat before you throw so many questions at him. How is he to respond when you ask one question after the next?"

"I’m sorry," Beatrice apologised, letting go of Rafael so he could find a seat. "I am just excited to see him. You don’t come to see us as often as I would like. You’ve brightened up the day with your presence. I already had to deal with your situation with Delilah."

"Edwin told you about it, didn’t he?" Rafael asked, knowing the butler might not have sat still and not told his mother. He knew Edwin kept his mother updated on what happened inside his home. He didn’t mind it as long as letters about every little thing in his home weren’t sent over here. "How did it go with Delilah and her mother?"

"Awful. Rachel was not told the truth about what happened, so I had to reveal to her what Delilah did. Delilah got upset that I was not understanding her actions and claimed she would have made a good daughter-in-law before storming off. Instead of going to scold her daughter, Rachel started to warn me about your relationship with a maid- Annalise?" Beatrice paused, surprised by the sight of Annalise by the door.

How long was Annalise standing there?

"Annalise," Beatrice forced a smile, turning to Rafael, who should have a good explanation for this. She was happy to see Annalise, but she was suspicious of why Annalise was here with him.

Delilah had claimed there was something between Rafael and Annalise, and the first time Beatrice had seen Rafael interact with Annalise, she thought something was forming between the two.

"Come inside, dear. Why are you standing around out there? Come in, and the two of you must explain why you are together on this wonderful day," said Beatrice.

"It is not as you are thinking, mother. Delilah has it out for Annalise, so I am keeping her close to me to keep her safe. I will soon speak with Delilah’s father to get him to stop her antics, but we both know a warning from Delilah’s father will not get her to stop. There’s nothing more to the reason why Annalise is here," Rafael replied.

Beatrice felt like a pin was stuck into the tiny bit of hope she had for Rafael coming to tell her about a relationship. She could care less about Delilah being right that he liked Annalise. Now she was back to waiting for Rafael to come to her and tell her that he had found the woman he wished to marry, or at least court.

"Good morning," Annalise greeted River and Beatrice. River returned the greeting while Beatrice touched her head and sighed.

"Good morning," Beatrice said, pushing her disappointment to the side for now. "I am sorry that you are in the mix of all of this."

"Don’t feel so sorry for her," Rafael said, taking a seat on the edge of their bed. "She had a hand in this fight between her and Delilah. She is on a warning to not do it again or she will be fired. You can sit there," he said, pointing to an empty chair for Annalise to sit in.

’Why did he have to bring that up now?’ Annalise thought. She hoped he would not tell the full story since everyone did not need to be aware of her tricks.

Annalise sat down off to the side to be out of their conversation. It felt weird to be in a room with all three of them like this. How could they trust that she would not repeat anything said today?

"Where does your friendship stand with Delilah and her mother? I personally do not want to be around anyone from their family," Rafael said.

"How could I be around them after what Delilah tried to do? Rachel and I had our own little argument about how we raise our children, and I don’t see us meeting with each other anytime soon. She says she will tell the other women about how I am reacting. I don’t see my fault in this for siding with you when her daughter wanted to do something so horrible," Beatrice said, still not seeing why the other women should get angry.

"She thinks I am letting you indulge in sleeping with a maid instead of finding you a wife. So when you do have a wife, you will still be sneaking around with the maid and causing your wife pain. I raised you to be better than that. I raised you well enough that you care to keep Annalise close to protect her."

’Am I the maid they are talking about?’ Annalise wondered. Why was it that she did nothing and others thought she had some sort of relationship with Rafael? She needed him to have a woman by his arm so she could be left out of conversations about his love life.

"I am sorry-"

"Don’t," Beatrice said, stopping Rafael from apologising for getting her wrapped up in this. "People like to say mothers with sons need to raise them well to treat their wives well, but there needs to be a conversation about how some of these young women have been raised. Doing as they like to get what they want. I was clueless a few times, but I knew I raised you well, so I will always defend your character."

"I almost went back to the market days where I would push anyone who tried to take up the fruit I wanted to buy for you. She is lucky that I was not close enough to grab her," Beatrice joked to get rid of the seriousness in the room.

There was no need for Rafael to apologise. He had the right to turn down Delilah and any other young lady without them doing something stupid because he did not love them. In high society, it was frowned upon for anyone to marry far below them, but you could not control who you fell in love with.

The only reason there was sometimes hatred from the wives toward their maids was that they worried about their husband’s wondering eyes. To some women, having maids around was like serving their husbands mistresses in their homes.

There was already one woman that Beatrice was quite close to who was being chased out of her home now that her husband finally had a boy from a maid he slept with. It was all he ever wanted, and since his wife had not yet given him a child, he wanted her gone.

However, the amount of money he would have to give her stopped him from divorcing her, so he resorted to making her life more miserable than it already was to make her leave. They would still be married, but she would not be in his home.
