The Knight's Mysterious Maid -
Chapter 91: Suspicious (2)
Chapter 91: Suspicious (2)
Annalise looked out the window of the carriage as it moved to escape the awkwardness that came with riding with Rafael. There was nothing to say and she didn’t want to look his way to avoid meeting his eyes. So, she kept looking out the window, taking in the sight of the town.
Annalise would always only go to the market on days she did not have to work so she was enjoying the free ride to look at more of the town. Her happiness was cut short when she remembered that Beatrice lived four houses away from Rafael.
If not for how big the homes were and the land that separated them, Annalise thought they could have walked here instead of using the carriage. Another day when the ground wasn’t so wet because of all the rain that had fallen and the sun wasn’t so hot as it tried to dry up the rain, they could walk.
’Why do they need homes this big?’ Annalise wondered. They wouldn’t need so many servants if they had a smaller home. Was this part of showing off your wealth?
Rafael folded his arms, watching Annalise stare outside in awe. Since they entered the carriage, she had not looked his way. He could have left her behind while he visited his mother, but he intended to use Annalise to make his mother not be so angry once they spoke about Delilah.
Since his mother liked Annalise, he could even leave Annalise here to keep her company in place of Delilah who should not be meeting with his mother again. Rafael was visiting to speak about what his mother’s relationship with Delilah would be like going forward and to speak about the letters her relatives kept sending. She had to be getting the same ones as him.
It was time to talk about her family being persistent that he visit them and be finally welcomed into the family.
"Oh," Annalise accidentally said out loud when the carriage stopped in front of the small home.
"Oh? Is it smaller than you expected?" Rafael asked, knowing the size of his parent’s home was the cause of her saying oh. It wouldn’t be the first time someone said it when they saw where his parents lived.
"Well, yes. Everyone who seems to have money always has a big estate like you. I’m just surprised that it is smaller than your manor. I like it," Annalise said.
It was only Beatrice and River living here so there was no need for a big house. Annalise sometimes disliked when she was finished cleaning one side of Rafael’s manor, she would then have to go to the other side before Mavis could ask her why she was not there already. Then it was so big that unless she was working with Cara, they would not see each other until dinner.
"We lived at the manor for a few years and then at a small house sometime after before moving back to the manor when it was officially handed over to my father. The only reason I have such a big home is because of the knights, but I enjoyed a smaller home," Rafael said, watching the gates open for his carriage.
Annalise was curious about the real story of the Callahan. Before River and Rafael, she had only heard of one more Callahan, but then from what she and Thomas were told, the name was not popular then. River Callahan was adopted by a man with the last name Callahan, but that man was not wealthy Annalise heard.
How did they come to have the large manor and so many knights? That story wasn’t spoken about like the one of River being an orphan. Perhaps the town did not find it to be exciting.
When the carriage stopped in front of the steps leading to the front door. Rafael opened the door and held it open for Annalise.
Annalise stared at him, confused as to why he was not getting out so she could follow him out.
"Annalise," Rafael sighed.
"Yes," she answered, shifting in her seat. What did he need from her?
"Get out of the carriage," he said.
"Oh," Annalise responded, quickly getting out to hold the door for him. Did she have it backwards? Wasn’t he supposed to get out first and then she would follow him? Servants were supposed to let their employers go first. Or was she supposed to get out first to hold the door as she was now?
Annalise sighed, giving up on trying to understand how everything worked. Next time if he held the door open and looked at her, she would know to get out first, and this was the correct way to do it.
Annalise closed the door after Rafael and followed him up the steps.
Rafael opened the front door without knocking and went straight inside. This was his second home so he could do as he wanted and not wait for the butler to place him in the drawing room until his parents showed up.
"Sir Rafael," Charles greeted Rafael. Since Rafael returned, he had not seen the young man.
"It is good to see you, Charles. Do you know where my parents are?" Rafael inquired.
"They are in their bedroom. They had a long morning in the garden, and now they are resting, but I am sure your mother would want to see you now. There was a bit of trouble this morning," Charles said, giving Rafael a heads up so he could be prepared for his mother’s questions.
"Was it Delilah or her parents?" Rafael questioned.
"Mother and daughter, but they did not stay too long. Your mother was not happy. I will get you something to drink and eat. Who is this?" Charles looked behind Rafael. The young woman was dressed like a maid, but as far as he knew, Rafael never took personal maids. He found it useless since he could take care of himself.
"This is Annalise, my maid. You might see her in the future, depending on how long she will be my maid and how often I come to visit. Prepare something for four," Rafael said, leaving to find his parents.
"Right away," Charles replied. He smiled at Annalise as she walked by him.
Annalise returned the smile and picked up her pace to be right behind Rafael. She looked at as much as she could as they went up to the second floor. The house felt peaceful, most likely because there weren’t any knights training with each other each way you turned and not as many servants.
For once, Annalise felt relaxed. She then thought of Rafael telling the butler to prepare for four people. Who else was here? She did not hear about Rafael having a sibling or having a family other than his parents.
Rafael looked over his shoulder at Annalise, who was once again taking in everything. He slowed down his pace so she could get a good look. For a girl who grew up on a farm, this type of life must be new to her, even though she has been working in his home for some time now.
Rafael stopped in front of his parent’s bedroom door and knocked twice, followed by, "It’s me."
There was silence for a moment, but then the door flew open, and Beatrice stood wide eye to see her son standing before her.
