Chapter 77: Excuses and apologies (1)

The next morning, Delilah arrived at Rafael’s home, ready to explain what happened between her and Annalise. She did not want him to have a bad opinion of her when he did not know what had happened. She was certain a lot of lies would be said by Annalise and the maid whose name she did not know.

Delilah regretted giving her money to the maid who was supposed to quietly steal the dress and bring it to her. The simple task was not done right and the maid made the mistake of betraying her.

Delilah didn’t see why the maid would fear Annalise more than her. She had the money and the power to make the maid’s life a living hell and she intended to do just that.

Delilah stared at the house she wished to call her own one day. She kept doing foolish things that ruined her chances of becoming Rafael’s wife, but she was here today to start over. To ask Rafael to forget anything she had done since he returned, like meeting in his study and offering her body to him.

"What is taking him so long? Is he speaking to the guards?" Delilah muttered, trying to look at what was stopping her from going inside Rafael’s home.

Each time she came to visit, the guards would let her in without any questions. She liked to believe that they already viewed her as the lady of the house.

’They should,’ Delilah thought. She intended to have that title soon.

Benjamin appeared at the right side of the carriage after speaking to the guards at the gates, who would not let him carry the carriage inside like always. "My lady. They have denied us from going inside."

Delilah looked at Benjamin, who must have heard wrong. "Rafael would never turn me away. I have known him for years. Speak with them again," she said, shooing him away with a flick of her wrist.

Delilah had spent plenty of time away from Rafael to come up with an excuse for what transpired between her and Annalise. She could not let her relationship with Rafael be wasted over a mere maid.

There was still some hope for her friendship with Rafael to remain intact, considering he had not talked to her parents about her trying to take the dress. Her mother would lecture her from morning to night if she knew that her daughter went out of her way to steal a dress from a maid. Her father would restrict her from leaving home without an escort.

Benjamin did not like the position he was in. He tried everything to get the guards to open the gates, but they kept repeating that they needed Rafael’s permission. This was new since the gates were always wide open each time Benjamin brought Delilah here.

"I used your father’s name, but the guards still turned you away. Should I start to leave-"

"Of course not!" Delilah exclaimed. She had not come all this way just to be turned back. "Tell one of them to find Rafael and let him know that I am here. I want to apologise for what happened. Go now, Do not return to me or think of moving this carriage until we are allowed inside those gates."

Benjamin left to try to get Delilah inside one more time. He didn’t see why she would be here again after the scene she had caused with the dress, her screaming, and him struggling to get beetles off of her. He wanted to go back to driving her mother around instead of her.

Delilah placed her thumb in her mouth to start biting away at her nail. Rafael had to be upset with her actions since the guards were not letting her in.

Delilah blamed the maid she had sent to get the dress for all of this. The foolish maid had let Annalise catch her and didn’t properly warn her about what Annalise had done to the dress.

Delilah was not going to leave the two of them after the fear she experienced. Annalise had another thing coming for her. Before she would get back at Annalise for making her look like a fool, she needed to get back into Rafael’s good graces to avoid women like Giselle stealing him from her.

Delilah worried from the moment she left that Giselle might have worked her way into seducing Rafael. She had faith that Rafael would continue to be a man who would turn down advances from other women, but there was no denying that Giselle got men to lust after her.

Rafael didn’t view Giselle like a sister, so he would have no issue taking her to bed or any other scandalous woman who would not care to get married first before sleeping with Rafael.

Delilah watched as a guard ran from the gates toward Rafael’s home, most likely to get Rafael to come outside or to get permission for her to enter. She hoped that Rafael’s being strict with his gates had nothing to do with her.

She regretted not following her mother’s instructions on how to get Rafael’s attention. Everything was going so well until her jealousy over a dress.

She should have kept calm when she learned Annalise had received gifts from Rafael and continued to pretend like she was interested in the knight Rafael had introduced her to so she could stay close to Rafael.

After a long moment of silence and waiting, Delilah looked out the window of her carriage at the guard rushing back to the gates. She crossed her fingers and hoped that there would be some good news.

"Why didn’t he come out to see me?" Delilah muttered, trying her best to look at the door to see if there was anyone there. She wasn’t just any old person for Rafael to not come to greet her. Was he really that angry with her?

"My lady," Benjamin said, returning to the side of the carriage. "We have been let in for a few minutes. Give me a moment to take us in."

Delilah frowned. "A few minutes?"

It felt like she was only being let in to explain her actions, apologise, and then she would be sent on her way. Delilah didn’t see why Rafael was acting this way. He knew her feelings and that she would be jealous upon hearing that he had given another woman a dress when he had never done such a thing for anyone other than his mother.

Delilah felt she should be commended for returning to apologise for her actions. Not many would be so bold as to return to his home after what she did. For now, Delilah was content with the fact that Rafael was going to speak with her. She would use the same tricks she used on her father when he was upset with her to get back on Rafael’s good side.

"He can’t be angry with me forever over a maid. I am like family to him," said Delilah.

Annalise was replaceable while she was not in her eyes. Rafael would have to be a fool to drag this on forever and be upset with her. Anyone with common sense would say that Rafael was crazy to be this angry with her and question why he gave a maid a dress if not for courting the maid.

"What happened with Connor does not need a dress," Delilah said, as it was already more than enough that Annalise was not taken advantage of. The expensive gifts were not necessary. What would a maid do with the dress Rafael had given to her other than sell it? It was better in her hands, which was why she had tried to take the dress.

The carriage stopped right in front of the steps leading to the front door. Benjamin opened her door and offered his hand to help her step out. He secretly hoped that she wouldn’t do something stupid to have them leave in a rush again, and him being forced to hide why she had returned home distraught.

Benjamin had not mentioned a word of what happened the last time Delilah was here, as she requested. It placed him in a difficult position since he was to report everything to her father at the end of the day, but he did not want to anger the spoiled young woman.

Once Delilah was out of the carriage, Benjamin picked up the bottle of wine she bought as a gift for Rafael before they came here.

"Give that to me," Delilah said, taking the bottle from Benjamin. She didn’t need him to walk with it behind her. "Take the carriage somewhere else. I will not be back soon."

Benjamin scratched the back of his head, wondering how that could be possible when they were only given a few minutes inside. He prepared himself to make a quick escape since he had a feeling Delilah’s conversation with Rafael might not go well.
