Chapter 76: Returning a favor (3)
"Since it was a gift from the palace, I put it away in a secret place," Edwin said as he searched the shelves for where he had hidden the cream. He made sure to take special care of it since it came from the king himself.
Rafael stood in the left corner of the room, watching Edwin search for the cream the king had sent him to heal his injuries. The palace had all sorts of unique medicines that only royalty could get their hands on.
Being the generous friend that he was, Tobias sent the cream, which was known to make a wound vanish if you used it regularly, to Rafael and Edgar. No one else would be able to get their hands on it since the man, who had travelled around the kingdom and outside of it to find new ways to heal someone, only made it for the palace.
Rafael had forgotten about it until now. "You can use it as you like. When the knights get injured and come looking for something to heal their wounds, give it to them."
Almost every day, a knight would break a part of their body. Rafael needed whatever he could get his hands on to make them heal quickly.
"The king sent it especially for you so he would not have to worry about your body. I have already spent the money you have set aside on medicine and other necessities for when the knights injure themselves. Not just anyone receives a gift from the king, so you should cherish it and use it as the king intended for it to be used," said Edwin.
Edwin saw it as a waste to give it to the knights, who injured themselves every second. The cream would be gone in a day if Edwin used it on them.
Rafael folded his arms. "When it runs out, I only need to send one letter to the king, and he will have a crate of them sent to me. Give it to the knights when they come looking for a cream to put on their wounds. My life would be easier if they had it."
If one of his wishes could be granted, Edwin would like for it to be that Rafael would put himself before others sometimes. He had applied cream to Rafael’s body after he returned from his expeditions and saw the many wounds Rafael had. Rafael was not some sort of God, but a mere human. He needed to put the same effort he put into taking care of his servants, into caring for his body.
If there was another knight present in the room, Edwin would take a risk and pin Rafael down to the floor and try to take care of as many of Rafael’s wounds as he could before Rafael would overpower them and fling them somewhere.
Annalise’s curiosity was through the roof upon hearing about a gift to Rafael from the king. If this cream worked wonders and Rafael did not want it, she would gladly take it. The pain in her hand was long gone, but it was still red.
Annalise was almost tempted to hurt her hand and return for some of this cream to see how well it worked.
Rafael intently followed Annalise’s every move. How she leaned to the right and then to the left, trying to get a better look at where Edwin was taking the cream from. Someone like her needed to have the cream by her side at all times.
His eyes settled on her hand, which she was moving around without flinching. She handled the pain from being grabbed by him better than many. There were a handful of his knights who would still be crying and claiming that their hand was broken.
If being a maid ever bore Annalise, he would welcome her as one of his knights. There would be no need for her to be tested like everyone else to become a knight. Rafael had seen enough to know that she would do well as one of his knights. He wouldn’t be surprised if she somehow knew how to use a sword.
It seemed that instead of holding a contest each year for men who wanted to become a part of his knights, he should visit wherever she had grown up to get more people like her on his side.
"Here it is," Edwin said, feeling relieved that it was not misplaced. It was too valuable for him to just lose it. He didn’t care if Rafael would be able to easily get another from the king. "Show me your hand, Annalise."
Annalise stuck out her right hand for Edwin to place the cream, and then she would be out of there. Back to hearing the sounds of couples showing how much they loved each other or maybe it was just two people caught up in a heated moment. Annalise didn’t know at this point, and she did not want to ever find out.
She would rather sleep out under the stars and let the rain soak her than hear what was happening in the servant quarters.
"I have not touched you yet, and you already look worried," Edwin said as he opened the jar. He was curious about how Annalise and Rafael had crossed paths, for Rafael had searched for him to take care of Annalise’s hand.
Edwin wasn’t one to gossip, but that didn’t mean he didn’t keep watch of what was happening here. It was hard to ignore Rafael’s gaze on Annalise, who was more interested in the cream.
Edwin felt like he was interrupting a moment between the two of them. The only reason he did not try to ask about it was that he was only the butler, and Rafael had warned the servants not to speak about him having a relationship with one of the maids.
Edwin would bet his right arm that Rafael might break his own rule in the future. Well, if Annalise was still working here.
Edwin had never seen a maid’s name called so many times in the two weeks Annalise was here and not be fired. Mavis mentioned Annalise to him several times. Speaking of how she wished to fire the young woman, but Annalise still managed to be here.
Somewhere deep, deep down inside, Mavis must have a soft spot for Annalise, who did not break under the pressure and still did her job.
"Done. I’m afraid I don’t have a treat to give you for being so still," Edwin joked. He wiped the remains of the cream off his fingers and onto his skin. He heard the creams from the palace did wonders to clear up someone’s skin and make them look much younger than they were. "Young master, will you be walking Annalise to her room?"
"Is there something wrong with your eyes, Edwin? Her hand is hurt, not her foot. She could make it back to her room on her own. Besides, she is not someone who enjoys help from the hero," Rafael said, shrugging his shoulders at Annalise. It was her words, not his. "I am going to bed," he said, pushing up off the wall to make his way out of the room.
Annalise glared at Rafael as he walked by her with a taunting smile. She didn’t care whether or not he said it to make fun of her. She wanted him to always remember that she did not need his help.
