Chapter 74: Returning a favor (1)
Chapter 74: Returning a favor (1)
Annalise rested on her bed, staring at the white ceiling of her room. She couldn’t help but wonder if Rafael had gone to bed by now since a few hours had passed since they drank together, and she excused herself. She had been stuck in her room since he had no intention of going to the festival.
With how silently he moved around, Annalise knew it would be a big risk for her to try searching the second floor again, but she was bored in her room. She wanted to leave, but there wasn’t anyone here for her to spend time with since she couldn’t go sneaking around. She heard a few of the maids return from the festival, but no one she knew had returned, or they would have knocked on her door.
Since she had not gotten anything done, Annalise wished she had gone to the festival to see what it was like.
Annalise rolled onto her side so that she could look out the open window. She covered herself with the soft blanket Rafael gifted her so that she would not be affected by the cold air. She watched as the rain lightly fell from the sky. It was the beginning of the end of the festival, so soon everyone would return.
"I can’t stay like this," Annalise said, taking the blanket off of her body and swinging her feet over the side of the bed to get up. She could not sleep when there was so much on her mind.
She worried about how her parents and everyone at home were doing and made herself unable to sleep. If she got lost in worrying about them, she would end up wanting to go home.
Annalise stood up from her bed to walk to her door to see who had returned and what was happening now. She wanted to avoid Rafael since she had made a fool of herself by thinking that what she was drinking contained alcohol, and now that the house might be full again, it was best for them not to be seen together.
Annalise exited her room and left the servant quarters in search of something to do. The servant quarters were much quieter than she expected since she had heard sounds as if some of the maids had returned.
"You have to be kidding me," Annalise muttered, picking up her pace as the sounds of a maid definitely not alone in her room could be heard as she walked by. She now hoped that this was not one of the sounds she had been hearing and mistook it for the maids returning.
The walls of their rooms were too thin for anyone to be thinking of being intimate here. Annalise did not need to hear what others were doing, especially when it was this. She understood why there weren’t too many people in the servant quarters. She might have missed the message that this was going to happen.
There were the knights and maids she had seen sitting by the fire outside, and with the drinking along with attraction and prior feelings, relationships were bound to start tonight.
Annalise covered her face when she heard another room having the same activity and being loud, like they were competing with the other couple in the other room. It was no wonder she could not sleep when this was happening not so far away from her.
Annalise was now all for Rafael banning the knights and maids from having relationships with each other. If anyone wanted to change her mind, they would have to take these meetings outside of the servant quarters. The only bright side was that they managed to take her mind off of her family. She could not miss her family in the middle of this.
Annalise decided to go to the balcony Rafael had taken her to. It was peaceful there, and as long as she closed the door, no one would know she was out there to try to interrupt her peace.
"I should have taken more of the drink he gave me," Annalise’s words became a whisper when she opened the door to the balcony and found Rafael still present.
After getting over the shock of him being there, she closed the door behind her to give them some privacy.
Instead of sitting on the wall as he did earlier, he sat on the floor with his back pressed against the wall and his eyes closed. There were two bottles that were not here when she was with him. One empty, and the other half empty.
Annalise picked up on the faint smell of alcohol and knew that Rafael might have become drunk.
Annalise stared down at Rafael, who had all of his guards down. He was so defenseless that she could kill him right now and solve many of her future problems.
She approached him as quietly as she could to not wake him and stooped down right in front of him. How could he be so careless as to lay around like this? He had no idea who was looking to harm him. He shouldn’t trust that his knights cared for him enough to not harm him since he had a rotten apple like Connor amongst the knights.
Annalise tilted her head to get a good look at his neck, which was tempting her to either wrap her hands around it or leave to find a knife to slit his throat. How rude of him to sleep peacefully while her mind was filled with ways to kill him.
Though she wished to, Annalise could not stop thinking about the fact that Rafael had helped her with Connor. She didn’t need it, but he did attack Connor because of what he intended to do to her, and he was taking it a step further by getting the town guards involved.
’I should look past that and think of my people,’ Annalise thought.
Her father would say to kill him, her mother would spare him for another day, and her grandmother, who endlessly spoke of returning favors, would tell her to spare him just this once or she would anger nature.
Annalise bit her tongue, not believing that she was going to leave him be. She could feel a stick to her buttocks if her grandmother were to ever know she killed someone who helped her.
Her grandmother was different from most, who hated the Castro kingdom back home. She would do anything to protect her people, but she believed in having a kind heart and looking beyond the differences of the two lands to help someone who helped you. Her grandmother believed that such an act could get rid of some of the anger on both sides.
"Just this once," Annalise whispered, reaching out her hand to push aside the long strands of hair that had fallen to cover most of his face. She hated when her hair covered her face as she slept and didn’t like to see it happen to someone else. "Ah!" She gasped, caught off guard by Rafael’s hand grabbing the hand she was going to touch him with.
Rafael felt the feather-like touch of someone’s hand brushing his hair away and reacted quickly by grabbing that hand and roughly squeezing it. He opened his eyes and was met by Annalise, wincing from the pain he was causing her.
