Chapter 73: Not drunk (3)
"That bastard," Beatrice muttered after she finished reading the letter her brother sent to her. "I should have choked him when I had the chance."
Her family were being a nuisance with the letters they were sending to her and the ones she knew they had started to send to Rafael. Urging her and Rafael to return to her childhood home so Rafael could formally be introduced to her side of the family. They were acting as if they had not viewed her as a stranger for years.
"Why does he think I will crawl back home after all these years?"
There were many things about the letters that angered her. The letter itself since the moment she had run off to marry River, her family sent a letter calling her a ruined woman, expecting her to work her life away, and die alone since River would go bored of her.
Her own flesh and blood turn their backs on her because she ran away from a marriage that would benefit them to being with River who made her the happiest she had ever been and gave her Rafael.
The same son her mother or father never acknowledged when she had the guts to send them a letter to know they had a grandson and that if they wished to move on and meet him, they could.
The letters from her family stop right after.
There wasn’t a letter when it was known she was pregnant. Not a letter each year for her birthdays or Rafael’s. Not a single letter during the time she sat at home praying her husband would return to her in one piece.
The first letter in years did not come when River had finally received his title as a knight. It came when the king had acknowledged his efforts, named him commander, and welcomed him to the palace a few times. The letters then doubled when Rafael’s name was spoken of in towns he had never visited and his relationship with the king plus other noblemen was known.
Rafael and River made something grand out of what little they started with and now her family was looking to benefit from it after years of wanting nothing to do with Beatrice’s little family.
Beatrice crumpled up the letter she intended to burn. None of her relatives had heeded her warning not to send her or Rafael any letters. It angered her that her threats were empty as there was nothing she could do to stop them from pestering not only her but Rafael also. River and Rafael were the ones who could shut up her family, but she wished to avoid a fight that would end in someone bleeding.
"How could they be so heartless?" Beatrice muttered, finding their actions to be out of this world. They were not even pretending to be nice to get back into her good graces. They were demanding she and Rafael come to them. "Not one mention of River," she balled up her fists, angered by the fact her brother was acting like River did not exist.
Beatrice knew what her family was like, but she could not help wanting them to be better with how they addressed her husband.
"Mention of what?" River asked, entering the dining room right in time to hear his name called. His eyes scanned the bottle on the table. "Have you been drinking?"
"No. I placed it there in case I would be in need of his help to calm my thoughts, but even at a time like this, I cannot bring myself to drink," Beatrice said. The bottle did not entice her even for a second.
"Good," River said, stooping down in front of Beatrice. Beatrice never resorted to drinking to calm herself, and he did not want it to start now.
With a festival in town, he expected to find his wife happy and wanting to drag him outside to enjoy the night, but to his surprise, Beatrice did not come running to plead with him to attend the festival. River had to prepare the carriage and begin to search for her.
The balled-up pieces of paper on the table gave him an idea of what might have upset her. Beatrice tried to hide the letters she received from her family at first, but one day River saw the letters arriving and took them to Beatrice himself. She came clean about it then.
"I told you to just let the butler either turn the letters away or burn them. If they upset you each time you read one, why continue to accept them?" River asked, pushing the two unopened letters away from Beatrice. She did not need to read whatever foolishness was sent to her.
Beatrice sighed also knowing that she was setting herself up to be angry by reading the letters, but only if she read them could she learn what her family was also writing to Rafael about.
Rafael wasn’t vocal about the letters he received from people he did not view as his family.
"I have to know what they might be sending to Rafael," Beatrice answered.
"Rafael can take care of himself. If they send him something that displeases him, he will take care of it on his own. I do not like seeing you be so upset and seeing you with a bottle in front of you when you are not one to drink," River said, taking the bottle off the table so she could not change her mind and consider taking a sip.
Her relatives would not push her to drink.
"I apologise-"
"Do not." Beatrice palmed her husband’s face to stop him from blaming himself. "This has nothing to do with you. It is my family that is acting like fools. I should not even refer to them as my family after the things they have said and done."
Regardless of what Beatrice said, River would always feel guilty since he had stolen her away from the life she had before. Where she still spoke to her relatives, and she never had to lift a finger.
He was the orphan boy with nothing to his name, while Beatrice had everything. River always regretted that their relationship led to her losing her family. He didn’t want her to experience what having no family was like, but at the same time, he could not refuse her when she wanted to leave everything behind and run away with him.
River had stayed quiet when it came to her family until they decided to ruin her for marrying him. The things he had said and the threats he made, sealed the deal that he would never happily meet her parents or brother.
He liked to see Beatrice as the bubbly person that she was, and anyone who interfered with that was his enemy. River didn’t care what status or wealth her family had, anyone bothering his wife and son had to deal with him.
"Beatrice," River said, covering her hand with his to take her mind off of her family. "I would love to take my beautiful wife to the festival and buy her all that she sets her eyes on. Will you join me?"
Beatrice smiled as she peered down at River, who was still as charming as he was in their youth. How could she ever say no to such a sweet offer? "I would love to go with you," she answered.
"The carriage is already out front. You can go get dressed, and I will wait right here for you," River said, lifting her hand to kiss the back of it.
Beatrice felt like she was a young girl happy to receive some attention from her crush. Over twenty years, and he still made her act this way. She would never, for even a second, regret her choice.
