Chapter 60: Crossed a line (2)

Annalise thought of this as a punishment Rafael or Mavis had placed on her. Why was it that each way she turned, she had to hear this ridiculous name he used for her?

"Just seeing you brightens up my day," Logan said as he drew closer to Annalise. He thought there was some hope when he saw Annalise smiling.

Annalise smiled as she imagined herself in the water, pushing him under and never letting him come back up. Then she would never have to hear those two words again. "I have work to do," she said, turning to follow the other maids.

Most had stopped to look at Logan since he was quite close to where they stood.

Aria, who found it unfortunate that she had to work the same job as Annalise the day after, frowned as she looked at Logan, who was clearly interested in Annalise, but Annalise was acting like she did not care for his advances.

Logan was a well-sought man among the knights because of his charming personality and his close relationship with Rafael. Not only had Annalise caught Rafael’s attention, but now she had someone like Logan chasing after her.

Aria wished Annalise was not part of the group washing the sheets so she would not have to witness this. It was annoying to see Annalise be so loved for doing absolutely nothing.

"Why are all of you going so far down the river to be swept away? Stay here so the knights can protect you," Logan said, so he could keep Annalise close by. He ignored the mumbling from the men who had heard him. None of those lazy bastards wanted to work. He stood still even when they splashed water at him.

Annalise took the other knights’ reaction as a no, and even if they were offering to help them, she would rather not stay. Plus, the knights would distract most of the other maids from getting any work done, and there was a certain time that Mavis wanted them to be back. "The young master wouldn’t be happy to see you not only swimming around but also helping us," she said.

"If he did, he would have yelled at me by now. Look," Logan pointed over his shoulder to where he had last seen Rafael. They were training, and it was Rafael who suggested they take a quick break to cool off.

Logan had to thank Rafael later since it was the perfect timing for him to show off his body to Annalise. However, there was a pain in his chest as she looked at him with a bored expression, like he had not the slightest bit impressed her.

Annalise looked ahead, where Logan had pointed at Rafael. Since Rafael was around, it only made her want to get out of there more quickly.

Not waiting for the other maids to make a decision on where they would wash the sheets, Annalise walked off first to find a good spot.

"Wait, wait, wait," Annalise heard behind her, followed by water splashing. It took all of her strength not to turn around and push him back into the water.

Logan circled around Annalise and tried to take the basket from her to get her to stop. "Let me help you- What the fuck?" He muttered when the basket wouldn’t budge from her hands. He hadn’t tugged on it much, but it was enough that it should have left her hands. Logan looked from the basket he was trying to take to Annalise, who didn’t see that she was wounding his ego.

Annalise followed his gaze back down to the basket he was trying to take. ’Right,’ she realised her mistake and let go of it even though she did not want to.

Logan felt triumphant now that he had it in his hands. "Rafael!" He called out to the man who would get the maids to stay.

Rafael ignored the first call, but the second time, he looked in the direction he heard Logan calling him. He expected to see something foolish, but instead, he saw Logan standing with the maids.

Christian, who stood beside Rafael in the water, shook his head once he saw who Logan was standing next to. Logan doing everything he could to get her attention was starting to make him feel embarrassed for Logan.

"We took up the maids spot to wash. It is only fair that we make a little room for them to do their jobs and keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t get hurt. You know it will be dangerous for them to go to any other part of the river," said Logan.

"Since when did he care about the maids so much? Is he trying to sleep with one of them?" Michael asked.

"The one whose basket he’s holding. I’ll bet my sword that he’ll be crying in a few weeks. Days even," Christian said, betting with anyone who would be foolish to think Logan was getting the maid beside him.

Michael’s eyes lit up since he had always wanted Christian’s sword. "Logan has a way with women, so I don’t think it will be long before you see him stumbling out of her room. I’ll take that bet."

"Don’t the two of you have anything better to do?" Rafael asked, continuing to look at Logan and Annalise right beside him. He had a feeling Logan had taken a liking to Annalise, but now it was confirmed. He didn’t like the maids and knights getting together since they would distract each other, but he could not stop their relationships.

There were a few knights who married and started families with women they met here as maids. Some of the women continued to work here as maids, while others could now stay at home since the knights received a good share of money for their time defending the kingdom.

Rafael witnessed how those men would fight harder since their victories meant their children would be safe. He could not block others from having families He could only step in when they were not doing their jobs correctly.

"Give space for the maids to wash," Rafael said as he began to leave the water. He had other things to do than stay in the water.

"Not so fast, commander." Christian grabbed Rafael’s arm to stop him from leaving. "The men have been worried about you not taking your mind off war since you returned. You will have them worrying about you again if you leave now. Let them see you relax. When you think of war, we all think of it since we follow you. Let the men see you relaxing so they can relax."

Rafael observed how many of the knights had stopped to watch him when it looked like he was leaving. It wasn’t easy for him to relax so often when he was the one in charge, but Christian was right that the men did feed off of how he acted or what he felt. They could not enjoy their time back at home when their leader had much to worry about.

"Your hand," Rafael said, wanting Christian to release him. "I will stay for a few more minutes. Longer if none of you starts acting like fools because there are women present."

"That means you will be leaving soon since we already have Logan acting like a fool," said Christian.
