Chapter 59: Crossed a line (1)

Rafael continued to walk back to his room, not bothering to give an explanation for why Annalise was still there after what she had done. This was his home and if anyone did not like what he did, they were always free to leave.

The matter was already dealt with and so far, Annalise seemed to not be thinking of doing it again. He gave her a second chance, but there would be no third. It was not up to anyone else to make him change his mind right now.

"You are Rafael Callahan. You should not be sleeping with a maid," Aria said as loudly as she could to get him to stop and he did. Aria took a step back, fearing she had crossed a line with him, but she had to let it be known how she felt.

Rafael sighed for what might be the tenth time today. First, Edgar was trying to hint that there was something between him and Annalise now there was this. He didn’t have that many interactions with Annalise as opposed to any other maid for one to think there was something between them. He had spent a lot of time around Mavis and no one pointed to her being intimate with him. Thankfully.

"I am not sleeping with one of my maids and I would prefer you not speak of what you wrongly assumed so loudly. You are out of line to be yelling me at for what I wish to do in my own home. I am almost tempted to have you pack your things and leave. Whatever personal issue you have with her that has led you to seek me out instead of the head maid, will get you fired. I am giving you one warning to end this now," Rafael said and then continued his walk up to the second floor.

One more word and she was out of here. He was always a man of second chances, but she was far out of line to come at him like this.

Aria bit her lip to hold back from letting her anger cause her to lose her job. It was supposed to be Annalise receiving the threat that she would lose her job. Why was Annalise just getting a slap on the wrist instead of being fired?

"If it was anyone else..." Aria trailed off as she recalled the second chances given to those who had done the worst things. Rafael was a forgiving man which was why he was so loved, but Aria hated it right now. How was she supposed to get ahead with this favoritism Rafael was showing to Annalise?

Now Mavis seemed to be less harsh on Annalise for some reason.

Though Rafael denied it, Aria did not believe that there was not something between him and Annalise. All she needed to do was wait for it to come to light one day and then everyone would see Annalise was fooling them all along.

Aria balled up her fists as the hot water she had placed herself in started to worry her. In trying to get Annalise fired, she made Rafael upset with her. There was a chance that she could be fired long before Annalise. Now she had to work even harder to be back on good terms with Rafael.

Not that she was ever on good terms with him. Rafael had noticed her no matter how many times she walked by him or cleaned up after him, yet he knew who Annalise was right away. Aria hated those who use their bodies to get ahead more than anything, and she hated that Annalise’s words about her plan kept filling her head. She had not plotted this right. It might have been better to go to Mavis.

While Aria tried to think of how she would get over her mistake of yelling at Rafael, Annalise entered her room and pressed her back on the door so she could finally relax. She survived another day at Rafael’s home. This was far longer than she had expected she would be here before messing up and revealing that she was someone who did not have good intentions.

Her hair was dripping wet after she took a quick dip in the river to cool off her body. She went there instead of bathing with the other maids since they were taking too long with the water they had, and by the time it would be her turn, the water would be cold anyway.

Annalise walked away from the door and untied her dress as she did so. After her somewhat wet dress dropped to the floor, she sat on her bed and looked at the soft blanket Rafael had given her. If Thomas were here, he would tell her to throw it away, but as she ran her fingers along the soft cloth, she could not bring herself to do so.

When she would need to leave she would get rid of it, but as for right now, Annalise looked forward to a night of having her window opened and being able to cover up as the cold air crept in.

Annalise closed her eyes, imagining her mother sitting her down to start drying her hair and asking her what trouble she had found herself in for the day as they sat near a fire. She missed home dearly, but she could not return yet. There was still more about their enemies she needed to learn, and she wanted to stick around to hear any plans concerning the border.

Annalise opened her eyes to stop herself from picturing her mother before it made her want to go home. Instead, she thought of what another day on the Callahan estate would bring.

The next day, Annalise carried a large basket full of sheets that had come from storage. They were meant to be washed and placed in some of the knight’s rooms. Instead of wasting time using small barrels to wash the sheets in, the maids decided to go down to the river to do it, and then they would hang the sheets on the trees to dry since there were too many to hang around on the lines.

The maids Annalise walked with were happy to be going down by the river since Mavis was not around as they washed the sheets and they could play around in the water. It was almost like a day off as long as they got out of their wet clothes before Mavis or Edwin could see them, but Cara said Mavis and Edwin were aware of what they did when they came down to the river. Once they were in time for their next job, Mavis and Edwin would not be hard on them.

"Ah!"

Hearing one of the maids in the front scream, Annalise snapped out of her thoughts and looked ahead, where she now heard splashing. It felt like she had been in this situation before with hearing a few screams and then looking around to see something she should not have seen.

Annalise stepped to the right to get a good look at what had caused the maids to scream and found the source.

Unlike when Rafael first returned and blessed the maids who were in his bathroom with a peep at his sword, there were now many knights in the river. Some were still dressed, others without a shirt, and some Annalise couldn’t tell if they were naked.

On a hot day, she could see why the knights would jump into the river to cool down. This meant the maids now had to go further down to give the knights their privacy.

As the maids dragged themselves away from the sight of the knights, Annalise heard a name that instantly made her want to stab the person who said it.

"Bush girl."
