Chapter 199: The ride home (4)
"Take my hand," Kayla said, offering her hand to Siena.
The carriage had long stopped, but Siena did not get out. It would be trouble if Travis were to come out and see her still sitting there.
Siena snapped out of her thoughts and looked around to finally notice she was back home. "I’m sorry. I was thinking about something," she answered, taking Kayla’s hand to step out of the carriage.
"Is it about Rafael? I wish you had more time with him. After some thought and listening to the women around us speak of him, I realised how exhausting it must be to be approached by countless young women wanting to court him. It is like how angry I used to get when you were bothered by so many young men," Kayla said.
Kayla thought that Siena was so understanding of not getting to speak with Rafael much since she had been in his shoes, dismissing people because she was tired of being courted by people she didn’t like.
"I knew from the very beginning that there would be a slow start to Rafael and I speaking. I wonder if it is best that he knows we are to marry instead of lying to him. I wanted him to get to know me before his uncle tried to introduce us. To see that I am in the same position as him, but I fear he will just push me away," said Siena.
She needed Rafael to be on the same page as her so if he tried to break this engagement she would be aware and ready to leave this town to return home. She wanted to work with him so she would be safe in the end. Safe from Travis and then find a way for her father to not be upset with her since it would be Rafael breaking the marriage.
If Rafael would not beat his uncle, Siena was ready to be his wife and wanted the two of them to at least get to know each other so they could peacefully exist in the same space. She was trying her best to get to know Rafael since, at the moment, a wedding seemed like it was going to happen.
Siena looked at the front of the carriage where the guard Travis assigned her stood. She needed a new guard who wouldn’t report everything to Travis. She wished her father would have listened to her when she said she should stay in her own mansion so she could stay out of the battles between Rafael and Travis.
She had a feeling that any letter she wanted to send to her father would first be given to Travis.
Siena walked up the steps and prepared herself to deal with Travis. She could only hope he wasn’t looking forward to good news about her and Rafael just yet. Then again, she might not have to say anything since Travis was keeping an eye on Rafael.
She spotted a few men she saw walking around here at the competition.
Siena froze up when she saw Travis standing at the bottom of the stairs with a book in his hands. She forced her usual smile whenever he was around and walked to him. "Travis," Siena greeted him.
Travis flipped through the book of poisonous plants. "You are home quite late. Did you have time with my dear nephew and sister?"
"The ride back home took longer than I hoped because of how many people attended the competition. There were too many carriages to get out of where they parked. I didn’t get to speak to Rafael as much as I wanted, but I enjoyed our conversation. I can see why he is loved among ladies."
"Is that so? It seems like you enjoyed yourself so that is all that matters, but I would have preferred if you left earlier to not disturb my plans. Dinner will be starting shortly so get clean and come down on time. I hate tardiness especially when it is from people taught not to be late," Travis said.
It was like years of being taught class was all for nothing.
Siena wished he would not be angry with her when she was not the one in control of the carriage. She left long before the competition ended since it was clear she would not get another chance to speak with Rafael, but she was still caught in many carriages leaving at the same time as her.
Before Siena could apologise once more, something caught her eyes. A maid was bringing down luggage that belonged to her.
"Am I switching rooms?" Siena asked. It was all she could think of for why her things would be moved. It couldn’t be that the engagement was over or he was letting her stay in a mansion of her own choice.
"You will be leaving town after dinner. If you had arrived when I expected you, you would have been able to travel in more daylight. My sister and her little family are taking a trip out of town soon. I want you to be there days ahead to meet them when they arrive. I arranged for one of your family friends to care for you during that time. The maids have finished packing for you," Travis explained, continuing to flip through the book.
"Why are you still here, Siena? Do you wish for dinner to start late or is that you have a complaint about having to leave? Your father is already aware of it. He thinks the travel will put you in a better mood since it is something you wanted. Were we wrong?" Travis asked, looking away from his book to Siena.
She was here to court Rafael and she could not do that if he was out of town and she was here. Siena was the one who wanted to get to know Rafael before the wedding and now, this was her chance. She should be thanking him right about now.
"No. I will get cleaned up for dinner quickly and then prepare to leave. Excuse me," Siena said, curtsying and then walking up the stairs to go to her room which did not feel like her private space with how easy the maid had gone inside to pack her things when she was not here.
"Did you see my nephew with anyone other than the knights?"
"There were a lot of young ladies to approach him, but since I am not from this town, I cannot tell you the names. I will try to make friends when I return so I know more about the people here," Siena answered.
"Good," Travis replied, closing the book. He looked up at where Siena stood on the stairs. "Just because you will not be here, does not mean that I cannot see what you are up to. I like that you are so eager to meet with him, but don’t mess this up. Your father and I have a lot riding on this."
"I am aware. I will not fail either one of you. A marriage will happen as you planned. I look forward to spending some time with Rafael and my future in-laws," said Siena.
Travis wished she would stop mentioning a future with River and Beatrice since they would not be around in the future.
