Chapter 198: The ride home (3)
"Must you always try to get the last word?" Rafael asked.
"Yes, because it means that I have won. I don’t like to lose too much and certainly not to you. You already get to win too much. I might be the chosen one to humble Rafael Callahan," Annalise replied. She rested her head on the window as tiredness came over her.
She didn’t do anything other than help him pack up his swords, but her body felt drained. Maybe it was because she needed something to eat after only eating breakfast.
"You might have been able to beat me when we were down by the river, but you purposely allowed it to end quickly. I am still unable to understand why unless you noticed Logan coming. Beating me won’t get you in trouble or is it that you don’t want others to know you know how to use a sword?" Rafael asked, unable to forget the talent she had.
He wanted to know more about her father, but her family wasn’t something she talked about often. Looking into it on his own would be a sure way to end any kind of relationship he could have with Annalise.
"I just felt like it was over so I gave up. There was nothing to it. Maybe one day we will get a rematch and I see it through to the end. Not anytime soon with how much Mavis is watching over me. I think Mavis might have been taken over by a ghost. She is too nice these days. I miss the Mavis that would yell and I would get a little bit angry," Annalise admitted.
She was so used to Mavis yelling to get the maids moving that this Mavis with the loving voice and great advice was starting to freak her out.
"You want Mavis to yell at you? Have you always been a person to secretly enjoys being yelled at? I thought you would appreciate Mavis being gentle with teaching you how to be better at your job. Mavis has always been kind. Sometimes she makes mistakes, but she does want everyone to do their job to the best of their ability. She is easy on you now because she sees how hard you have been working," Rafael explained.
"I am still more comfortable when she yells, but I will try to get used to her calm side. She has changed a lot these days by being fair to all the maids. She normally has- Me saying this will not make her lose her job, right?" Annalise asked, panicking as she realised what she was talking about with Rafael.
"No. I don’t plan to fire Mavis because of what anyone says about her personality. She will be fired if she does something a head maid should not like allowing something to happen to the servants and not tell me. Your eyes look like they could jump out of your head," Rafael chuckled.
Annalise touched her chest. "It is because I get ahead of myself when speaking with you. I forget that you are my employer until it is time to clean up after you. I can’t remember you ever scolding me when I became your maid. It couldn’t be that you liked me from the very beginning to let me speak so casually."
"For the last time, I prefer for the servants to not be so tense around me to the point they get so scared to breathe. I don’t want any of you to come telling me your gossip, but I do not mind having a conversation as long as I am not busy. We can speak as long as it doesn’t disrupt your work. And, I did not like you from the beginning," Rafael said, clarifying this so Annalise did not feel so full of herself.
She had this triumphant smile each time she spoke about his feelings and she might not realise it.
"I started to like you after you became my maid. That is all I will say," he added.
"If that is what you think. Today I was hoping to see the king or many of your wealthy friends the town speaks of. Like the duke. I thought I might have seen him again and seen the faces of the men you are said to have connections with. I’m sure many of the young women present were sad to not see your friends," Annalise said, feeling sad since she did not get to see the king.
She wouldn’t need to travel to Lockwood if the king came here. At this point, while she listened to whatever the town guards here had to say to the border, it would be a good idea to send Thomas with some poison to the palace. Give it to the man Grant she read of in the letter.
An enemy of the king should be ready to hear out Thomas since whatever plans they had at the moment were not working since the king was still alive. Unless there was another goal.
"Many of my friends live too far out of town. They try to make it when they can, but we are not young anymore for them to pick up their bags and come here. Some have families and other responsibilities. Edgar is married now and last I heard, he killed his father-in-law. The baron’s death has already reached this town-"
Annalise’s eyes lit up upon hearing that the duke killed his father-in-law. " How did he do it? With a stab to the heart? Arrow? I have not heard such news from the maids."
Rafael stared at Annalise in disbelief at how she reacted to the news. When he told Christain about it, he was concerned about why Edgar did it, but Annalise was far from being concerned. She looked excited. It was far from how a normal person would react to this news.
"You shouldn’t like violence so much. Shouldn’t your first reaction be to condemn Edgar for killing his father-in-law?" Rafael asked. There was no why in her questions.
He was used to Edgar and his ways for news of him killing the baron to not make him think poorly of Edgar. He was still more shocked by Edgar’s engagement which had already become a wedding than he was when hearing about Edgar killing the baron. That was Edgar being Edgar, but others would call him a monster.
Yet, Annalise sat before him with sparkles in her eyes, wanting to know how the baron died.
"People who like to say violence is not the answer are those who cannot fight. I am curious what led a man to kill the father of the woman he loves unless his wife was being hurt. I would never allow that to happen to my father, but then again, I don’t have to worry about him," Annalise said, imagining how her father would have killed the duke.
Her father was just as tall as Rafael, but more muscular. Maybe she was biased, but she couldn’t see anyone beating her father. It was why she was so interested in seeing River fight because his fight against her father was pretty much a draw.
"Your father sounds like a scary man," Rafael noted. He had a feeling her father was far from the man he imagined.
"For a man like you who has confessed to having feelings for his beloved daughter, he will be scarier than you can ever imagine if you ever see him face-to-face. You should pray not," Annalise said since if her father were to ever find out Rafael kissed her, he would attempt to break Rafael’s skull.
