Chapter 193: Knowing when to quit (1)
"You sure took your sweet time to come out here and handle your knights. What could have been more important in your tent when you were hearing all of this yelling from your knights? I almost had to kill a few of your knights" said Martin Flynn, one of the captains for the border guards.
Rafael ignored Martin and created a path between his knights and the guards. There were so many townspeople around and all this fighting between the people meant to be keeping the kingdom safe would reach the king and the court which would send letters to annoy him.
"Get back," Rafael said to his knights as he pushed toward his tent so there would be space between them and the guards.
"I sent three guards to this town to get the list of men who would be joining us and bring those who were ready. Care to explain why only one returned and the other two cannot be found? I was told they visited you," Martin said, keeping his hand on his sword in case Rafael would try something.
He didn’t trust the knights and their bastard of a commander. The moment he heard two of his guards were missing and they had met with Rafael, he sped up his travel to be here to get to the bottom of the missing men.
"Maybe they ran away. Ever thought of that?" Rafael asked since it wouldn’t be the first time men ran away from their duties. Many were scared to take part in the war at the border.
Rafael had not heard about any missing men and the border guards did not concern him. Martin should go to the town guards to report it instead of disrupting his event.
Martin grinned, entertained by Rafael’s attitude. "Border guards would not run away from their duty. Marcellus said the other two went out to drink and enjoy their little time with women. They didn’t show up in the morning when it was time to leave. My men run from nothing. Someone did something to them and I think you would know."
Christian and Logn pushed through the crowd with other knights behind them to reach Rafael’s side. The competition was long forgotten now that Martin was here. The man who was always picking at what Rafael did and complaining to the palace. The same man who then turned around and requested the knights join him at the border.
"I didn’t take your guards. As irritating as they were, I had no reason to take them. Look elsewhere for your guards and leave us. You’ve already caused enough disturbance on such a good day," Rafael said, turning to leave to head back to the field so his knights would follow.
"The grand Callahan competition to bring in young men. How about you and I have a little match and the winner gets to take the first pick of the men taking part today? You always send the border the scraps you don’t want. It’s about time we get the first pick or are you scared?" Martin asked out loud since Rafael was walking away.
"I’ve always said that you weren’t as good as the tales I heard about you. My guards always get compared to your knights and receive the lower end of praise, but it is my guards who are always ready for a fight."
Rafael stopped to offer Martin advice. "Maybe your inability to stop and think before charging into a fight is the reason you can never claim the border," he said.
It wasn’t that he was scared to fight Martin, but the commander of knights and the captain of guards fighting would only have the palace on his ass and from what he was hearing through letters, Tobias didn’t need this added to the list of things he needed to deal with.
Martin wasn’t smart enough to think how even a playful fight would affect the two of them. There was already a lot of tension in the air and the people watching could no doubt feel it. It wouldn’t look like a playful, friendly competition with how Martin would take this chance to take out his anger and it would end in a real fight.
"The border is harder to claim, you fools realise. Thanks to you not coming to our aid-"
"Do you hate us or need us? Pick a side and stick to it," Christian said, walking past Rafael to deal with Martin. He would gladly fight Martin to shut him up. "For a group of people who speak down on us so often, you’ve been crying to the palace a lot to convince us to join you."
"Enough," Rafael said to Christian. There were too many people around who should not know about the battles between the knights and guards.
They should not be hearing that the guards needed help at the border. The border was a touchy subject that should not be casually spoken about since it would cause panic.
"We have a competition to deal with. Stay if you wish, but do not cause trouble. We do not have your guards and if you think something has happened to them, you should work with the town guards to find them fast," Rafael said.
If one of his knights had gone missing, he wouldn’t be standing about picking a fight with someone. He’d be looking all over the town, trying to get proper clues on where they were last and who they were with.
Martin stepped forward in the direction of where Rafael stood, causing the knights to block Rafael, and in return, the border guards pulled out their swords.
"Look at you all. Like trained dogs," Martin said, looking around at the faces full of hate. One little step and they were ready to fight for Rafael. As much as he hated them, he envied how they moved as if they shared a brain. "I have already invited the town guards to come here and have a word with you since you are a suspect."
"Lower your swords," Martin commanded his guards. "We will not cause any more trouble today. We’ve already scared many of the young ladies present. I hope we can all be civil."
Rafael didn’t own the field they were using today so he couldn’t send Martin away and he would like to stop the townspeople from talking about their one-sided feud, so he continued to walk to let Martin and his guards set up somewhere.
Martin was another one of the fools who hated him simply because he was made the commander. They all thought he only got the title because his father was the former commander although when they were all aiming to become knights, they had not beaten him. It was not his fault that his father taught him a few tricks and then the man he called grandfather was also a knight.
He wasn’t the only one with family ties to knights so if it was unfair for him to sometimes be privately trained by his father, Martin should point fingers at everyone else who was trained by their relatives or trained by tutors.
To have tutors was something Rafael would not have his parents waste money on so he only had a chance to listen to a tutor when he visited Edgar, the friend with money at his fingertips.
Rafael looked at the tent where the guards remained. He hoped Annalise would listen to him and not come out of it. Martin had a liking for trying to mess with him or take what was his.
Annalise wasn’t his woman for Martin to say he stole her, but if Rafael saw the two of them together Martin would get the fight he sought after and it wouldn’t have a pretty ending.
