Chapter 186: Let’s be friends (2)
"Annalise!" Thomas called after her. He was utterly confused by why she suddenly screamed and walked away from him without telling him anything. He looked down at the field to see Rafael looking this way and wondered if it had something to do with him.
Thomas wished Annalise would listen to him when he spoke about Rafael and it not being a good idea that she was so close to him or sometimes alone with him. Thomas could tell that Rafael felt something for Annalise and who wouldn’t? Annalise was a special woman and she was meant to be with someone who suited her. Not Rafael Callahan.
The man was her enemy, and even if he wasn’t, Thomas would not allow it.
Thomas started to follow Annalise before she could wander too far away and get lost in the crowd of people. He needed an explanation for what just happened.
Luckily, Annalise had not walked far away and he found her resting her head against a tree. Occasionally hitting her head against it. He had not seen her so troubled since the one time she challenged her father to a duel and lost.
"Annalise," Thomas said softly in a comforting tone to get her to stop hitting her head. "What happened back there?"
"I had a crazy thought so I came to fix my head. I am all better now," Annalise said, turning her head to look at Thomas.
Thomas was put off by a faint red mark on her forehead. Annalise probably did not know how much she stressed him out. "Please stop using this as a way to fix your head. It doesn’t work," he said, rubbing her forehead with his right thumb to soothe the pain.
"It does because now I am more focused on the pain than what was on my mind before. You should try it sometime when something is troubling your mind. You don’t need to do this," Annalise said, pushing his hand away from her head.
"Must you always worry me?" Thomas asked.
"I don’t do it purposely. It is not my fault that the smallest thing has you losing your mind. We should go back to where we were. If I leave where Rafael can see me, he’s going to assume that I am getting myself in trouble. Did you eat already? I can get you some food for free," Annalise said as she walked around Thomas.
Thomas remained silent because if he said what was on his mind, Annalise would get angry with him. She had changed too much since they came here. Before, she spoke of killing Rafael and others like him at some point, but now she had tossed that plan out the window to stay by Rafael as a maid to gather information.
The way she spoke about Rafael had dramatically changed. It wasn’t like she changed her opinion about all the knights, it was only Rafael. It was starting to feel like she was getting too caught up in being his maid. She had forgotten who she really was and believed that she was really a maid.
Thomas needed to bring her back to the purpose of why they were here since it was getting so confusing, but he knew Annalise would get angry with him. She would mention that she did not ask him to follow her all the way here. He volunteered to come with her, promising he would listen to what she wanted.
He had been listening to her orders since they left home, but now that Rafael was here, he could not stay quiet. He knew very well that it was his jealousy making him this way more so than his concern for Annalise being around Rafael.
He could stay quietly by Annalise and not have her return his feelings, but he wanted the man she settled with to be right for her. Annalise was to be the leader after her father and being with Rafael would only make things hard for her.
"You there!"
Thomas walked after Annaluse to be by her side to keep watch for the people from the palace and see if his thoughts about her and Rafael were right.
"I said you there!"
Thomas stopped walking when something hit the back of his head. The people in this town liked to go on and on about class. He wished they would open their eyes to the fact they lacked it.
"I was calling for you, but you did not listen. I am sorry," Giselle apologised. She walked forward to get her hat she threw to get him to stop.
"Sorry? If you’re sorry you should let me hit you," Thomas said, looking down at the woman picking up the hat on the ground.
Giselle panicked, afraid of his gaze when she looked up and saw his face. "I am truly sorry. I did that without thinking. I was trying to get you to stop before you would go back to Annalise."
"How do you know Annalise?" Thomas asked.
"I used to be in love with the man she works for. I still am a little bit. Love doesn’t go away faster than I would like it to. Are you her lover?" Giselle asked, standing up straight as she placed her hat back on her head. "I saw the way you were watching her just now. I wonder-"
"You misunderstood what you saw. I am not her lover," Thomas quickly corrected her. This was something he did not want her to mention to Annalise.
Giselle didn’t believe him because she saw the way he looked at Annalise as she walked away. "So, there’s another pitiful person like me who won’t be able to receive love from the person they love. That is good to know."
"What do you want from me? Why did you hit me over the head? Do not think you have gotten away with that so quickly. Just because I am a man does not mean you can throw something at me and get away with it. Be quick," Thomas said, looking back at where Annalise walked off to, and spotted her walking back to him with folded arms.
"Thomas, you sly dog. Here I thought you were behind me, but you were talking to a woman. I never thought I would see the day," Annalise said, smiling as she was greatly amused to see Thomas standing with Giselle.
"It is not like that," Thomas quickly defended himself. He did not stop to speak to a woman. "She threw her hat at me," he said, pointing to the hat Giselle wore.
"You have moved on from Rafael quite quickly to be throwing a hat at him. Why did you throw a hat?" Annalise asked, stepping in between Thomas and Giselle.
"I wanted to get his attention to speak about you," Giselle honestly answered. "Is this your partner? Husband maybe?"
"He’s my brother," said Annalise.
Giselle looked at the two for any similarities, but found nothing. "You don’t look alike."
"He’s my father’s bastard," Annalise answered.
"Stop saying that please," Thomas begged Annalise.
Annalise ignored Thomas and stepped to the side to get a better view of the young ladies who kept eyeing them. They laughed and whispered something amongst themselves after looking their way. Unless they were smitten by Thomas or for some reason talking about her, they had to be talking about Giselle.
"Were you trying to run away from them? The girls behind you. Are they laughing at you?" Annalise asked.
Giselle didn’t turn around to see who Annalise spoke of. She knew the other ladies still had to be watching her. "They are hard to please. My old appearance will not easily forgotten," she answered.
Annalise stared at the young ladies picking on Giselle. A few of them weren’t easy on the eyes and shouldn’t be laughing. "I don’t see why they would be laughing at you when you are pretty. Prettier than most of them. I am not saying that to cheer you up. It is simply the truth."
Giselle touched her chest. "Whenever you comment on my appearance, I get a weird feeling here."
Thomas pulled Annalise back against him. They needed to get out of this town to be far away from these people with their growing feelings for Annalise. He had passed through the red light district many times to know that women would sometimes be involved with other women.
"We need to go," he told Annalise.
